TVTropes finally has an official mobile app. I know we are late to the game but we finally made it. You can download it here:
IOS:
https://apps.apple.com/app/6738365737
Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tvtropes.app
What's new?
- Home Screen showing most popular indexes/pages
- AI story generator using tropes database. Choose your Hero, Setting, Narrative Device, etc and watch your story come together with AI
- Push notifications for replies to your followed threads, new PM's, queries, reviews, TLP drafts, etc.
- Badge Shop added to the app and all badges besides awards and pro-user badges are free to add
- Video tab with full screen browsing (open in full screen then scroll between videos)
- New Video options for closed-captions and zoom (helpful for old 4x3 aspect videos)
- PM messages are grouped by title/troper (looks similar to texting but grouped by conversations like email)
- Better wiki walk experience (swipe left/right on your phone to traverse an index, swipe up from the button to switch index)
- Queries, Reviews and Trope Launch Pad have Image upload, preview and markup help
- Main Review section has images and a search bar along with "mine" and "replies" filters
If you find a bug please report it in our separate bug thread which we started last month for beta testing
In this thread please give us feedback on the app. What do you like it about it? What do you hate about it? How can we improve to make it the best app ever?

If it's different from the already-existing story generator, my suggestion would be to just, re-implement the old one in place of the AI, because that's old and long-established technology and not saddled with controversy. If that's already what it is... then just take the AI buzzword off??? Just keep calling it the story generator like it always was.
Not using the app and don't have plans to because I'm never on mobile anyway so it's pointless but I'll point out that the current website story generator is super broken and kind of completely useless because of a few bugs, so if the AI one does get replaced with it down the line, it would need to be fixed first. also please fix it I'm begging
As for the "does the AI use my specific writing" issue, I'm kind of neutral in the whole AI debate but I'd like to point out that there's not really a way to exclude the content of certain users from the AI if that's what it's being fed. I mean, that's the nature of the beast that is a wiki: Unless the staff designates hours to figuring out who made what specific content, anything goes. Because over the course of millions of edits and decades of existence, it's just not really feasible to expect some "op-out" process. Also it begs the question of what counts as "your" content — original writing? Stuff you edited? Stuff you put back / crosswicked?

Currently Working On: Enforced Trope>We'll remove AI in the next version
Who wants it in *this* version? I thought the idea of having an app was fairly neat, nothing groundbreaking, but this is just abysmal. I cannot believe the dinky little nerd fansite is pulling the same needless hype train tactics as social medias and search engines. I'm out.
Thats not what the owner said. He said if no one ends up finding it useful we will remove it. Because of course if no one really uses it we'll remove it, its not serving its purpose. But as we saw with the addition of video examples, a ton of users loved it and uploaded tens of thousands of videos and we got millions of views despite the backlash.

Now Monitoring Query Bugs and Query WishlistThe video tab didn't use a currently environmentally horrible sponge of user data to spit out a single response.
Wouldn't touch it with yours, mate
respectfully i don't think video examples and an ai-powered story generator can be compared just bc they both had backlash, those are two very different things that i'd assume were (initially in the videos' case) unpopular for very different reasons
Edited by Bruhmpex on Mar 19th 2025 at 1:17:31 AM
My point is that it all depends on if they are used because thats why we kept the videos. if no one ended up using the video examples we would've also removed them. We don't care why people don't like it. We only care if people use it.

We can tell. You wanted a response, and the reasons why we don't want it, and it all seems pretty unanimous to me, but I'm guessing for whatever reason the chatgpt button is going to stay anyway.

At least tell us the AI model you're using and the current carbon footprint of other uses of it.
A noisy minority don't represent the general userbase.
Happy users are quiet users - people are much more likely to speak up with complaints than praise. The usage of the feature is the praise.
It's an interesting feature but crude in how it just clobbers the tropes together with a few randomly generated words.
Life is more fun with infinite MP.Regardless of intention, AI generated content is still a very controversial subject, not in the least because it has been accused of stifling creativity by eliminating the human factor in storytelling. Electing to use it in any capacity was bound to cause a stir with the user base.
Hademaniacs, The TV Tropes Character Crossover War is your place for all things Hades! Go give 'em the love, comin' soon to a new home!I don't even go on the forums but wow. Please ditch the plagiarism machine, it has no place on this site.
Lets at least hope the investor money is worth it
Ey, migi vuru? And considering this site is all about documenting and troping creative works, backlash against AI is basically guaranteed.

"You don't have to use it-" my brother in christ, it's not just the use that's the problem. It's also the data gathering, which you have been worrying tight-lipped about for someone so open about drinking the AI kool-aid.
Even an "opt-out of AI-training" would be great at this point (though a full removal of AI all-together would be ideal)
Precisely. To say nothing that such technology is ripe for potential misuse.
Hademaniacs, The TV Tropes Character Crossover War is your place for all things Hades! Go give 'em the love, comin' soon to a new home!Probably won't use it the app or keep it installed because me phone isn't exactly brimming with space, but I had a brief look and here are some thoughts:
- I like the structure of the main page, with the categories of examples of tropes and media. My only suggestion would perhaps be to split it up a bit into media and trope sections.
- This might just be a me-issue, but I do think that the posts on the forums are a bit too large (as in they take up too much space compared to the website version), though for some people that might be an improvement.
- I'm personally not a huge fan of AI, though it depends on the situation (AI has existed for a long time and been widely used, after all). Here, the environmental impact is worth thinking about but at least it's, presumably, not plagiarising people or replacing jobs. I did try it out and thought it was an ok novelty thing, a bit limited and lacking in detail.
- Since the backlash against the AI has (at least vocally) been immense, I would perhaps suggest explaining what AI model it uses, what data it uses, what the goal is, etc. Whilst that won't please everyone or fix every issue associated with AI, transparency goes a long way towards trust.

Its not gathering any data or saving any data from the site. When you click a trope from the generator its searching our database for that info and then spitting out the story at the end. Nothing is saved or stored in the AI.
I asked the database guys and they said the AI is

Now Monitoring Query Bugs and Query Wishlistx4 Eh. I'm on your side, but if they're training it off of Tv Tropes it's not as if it's all that feasible. I'll probably actively avoid contributing to that side of the site, though. If the forums are used too that'd give me a reason to reconsider, but I see no sane reason to do so, especially considering their goals with the damn thing.

Naturally when I went to download the app from the Google store it also suggested a bunch of sex hookup apps, presumably because the store assumed I was a Troper.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.Admittedly, it doesn't seem like Claude's released data on how much power it uses for a single generation, but given Chat GPT's history, I'm more than a little worried. I'm guessing you don't know either.
I'm just baffled such a reviled feature is still being defended. Does it make you more money? Who asked for this?
Edited by WinningPony on Mar 19th 2025 at 1:47:17 AM
I'm usually not involved with forums (or even talking to other people at all) on Tv Tropes, but Yeesh. Given how many users have been openly against AI in ATT queries regarding it, and the objectively bad impacts AI has on the real world, I'm more than a little shocked the fellas in charged deemed that to be a good feature.
If that's what you guys wanted, then go crazy. But it ain't something I'm interested in supporting. Meaning i cant, in good faith, be on this site anymore.
Ciao, tropers.
