Cycle tourism

  • Consideration of the best way to support international cycling events

With the aim of attracting tourists from both within Japan and overseas, we will work with local governments hoping to host an international cycling event, considering how the nation can provide support and offer assistance.

  • Promoting the development and utilization of wide-area cycling roads at existing bicycle racing tracks and parks

We will develop wide-area cycling roads, including large-scale bicycle lanes, so that cyclists from Japan and abroad can enjoy a comfortable ride, including setting up model routes with the aim of creating an advanced cycling environment.

  • Creation of "National Cycle Routes"

Like the "Shimanami Kaido" (official name: Nishiseto Expressway), which has been highly praised overseas, we plan to create a "National Cycle Route" (tentative name) to promote world-class cycling roads both domestically and internationally. In conjunction with this, we are also considering how to create a riding environment that is suitable for foreign visitors to Japan and how to train cycling guides.

  • Expanding the implementation of cycle trains, etc. by sharing best practices

"Cycle trains" (a service that allows people to bring their bicycles onto trains without dismantling them) and "cycle buses" are already in operation on 62 routes operated by 52 companies across the country, and the METI will support further expansion of these services by introducing examples of such initiatives to railway and bus operators that have not yet taken up the initiative.
