Sherlock Holmes and the Terror Out of Time Paperback – January 1, 2002

Beginning with an establishing prologue set in British pre-history, we jump quickly to Baker Street where the dying seaman, India Jack Neville, has dropped a package of unspeakable horror literally at the feet of Sherlock Holmes, Professor Challenger and Inspector Wilkins, interrupting their fascinating discourse on Darwinism. With the idol safely in their hands and Watson away, Holmes and Challenger set out to unravel its secrets. What does this ugly idol have to do with the Ki'M'tollo sect of the Maldives? Could it be tied into attacks in the docklands by three giant serpent-like beasts? Holmes and Challenger, the detective and the scientist, are determined to find out! Their quest for knowledge takes them to the British Museum and puts them at odds with a mysterious dark magician named Laslo Bronislav, who is deemed so evil that even Aleister Crowley refers to him as "That Devil!" Aided by the late Professor Moriarty's chief information man McBane, Bronislav is determined to retrieve the idol from Holmes at all costs.

Review

I confess to having a fondness for Sherlock Holmes cross-universe pastiches when handled with a bit of flair, so when I'd discovered that Gryphon Books was releasing a third Holmes/H.P. Lovecraft pastiche by Ralph E. Vaughan, I lost no time in ordering it. On arrival it went directly to the top of my ever-increasing pile of pastiches, such is my regard for Vaughan's previous work... After devouring the book in one sitting, I'm happy to say that my regard is still intact and my fondness for Vaughan's approach to Holmes and HPL has increased once again. (Charles Prepolec, Bakerstreetdozen.com)

"What would happen if the minds of Sherlock Holmes and Professor Challenger were allied in a single mission? Could even their intelligence and resourcefulness be a match for the might of Cthulhu and his minions if they were in fact ready to return to our universe? Author Vaughan explores that possibility in this short novel from Gryphon Books, which harnesses Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's two greatest heroes and sets them in the universe of H.P. Lovecraft...the juxtaposition of characters and situation is an interesting one. Most readers should find this fun..." (Don D'Ammassa, Locus)

From the Author

Sherlock Holmes and the Terror Out of Time was my third Sherlock Holmes pastiche to be published by Gary Lovisi's Gryphon Books (the previous two being The Adventure of the Ancient Gods and The Dreaming Detective), and this time I wanted to accomplish two things: to move Holmes away from the Cthulhu Mythos and to involve Professor Challenger, Conan Doyle's scientific hero of the Edwardian Age. I was successful, I think, in bringing Holmes and Challenger together, but I was a little less so in getting out from under the shadow of Cthulhu. Although I never once mentioned the big guy sleeping the big sleep down in Rhy'leh, people associated the water-monsters of the story with the creatures of the mythos; in actuality, I based them on the orms of ancient British mythology and an old legend of the Maldives, related to me by Thor Heyerdahl. I also brought in two characters from other of my stories, India Jack Neville, a cockney sailor from The Quest for the Copper Scrolls, and Laslo Bronislav, a man so evil that even the infamous Aleister Crowley quailed before him; Bronislav also figures in The Quest for the Copper Scrolls, but his sinister shadow has moved through other published short stories of mine.

Ralph E. Vaughan is the author of the best-selling DCI Arthur Ravyn Mystery series, classic whodunits set in the (probably) fictional county of Hammershire, where change comes slowly if at all, the past often intrudes upon the present, and old things sometimes refuse to die.

He has also written several Sherlock Holmes novels and stories, notably "The Adventure of the Ancient Gods," the first-ever crossover between the literary worlds of Holmes and Lovecraft. Other books include "The Dreaming Detective," "Sherlock Holmes and the Coils of Time," "Professor Challenger & The Secret of the Dreamlands," and "The Terror Out of Time."

He is the creator of the popular Paws & Claws adventure series, beginning with "Paws & Claws: A Three Dog Mystery," in which the amazing canines of the Three Dog Detective Agency protect the weak and innocent inhabitants of their Chula Vista neighborhood, thwart the evil plans of the nefarious Feral Gang, and occasionally save the world. The series continues with "A Flight of Raptors," "K-9 Blues," the controversial "The Death & Life of American Dog," and the time-twisting "Dogs of S.T.E.A.M." Among his science fiction books are "Shadows Against the Empire" and "Amidst Dark Satanic Mills," interplanetary steampunk adventures set in the late 19th Century.

A writer since the late 1960s, he has published more than 300 short stories in a variety of magazines and journals, some of which are included in "Beneath Strange Stars," a collection of tales from more than forty years of writing. An expert on fantasy writer HP Lovecraft, he also wrote many articles for fannish and scholarly journals, and authored the authoritative "HP Lovecraft in the Comics," a survey and analysis of how Lovecraft's stories were interpreted in graphic print formats through the 20th Century.

He is a long-time resident of Chula Vista, California, graduating from Castle Park High School and Southwestern College, leaving his hometown only long enough to serve as an Army photojournalist for two terms. He is married and has two children, a daughter who is a game designer, playwright and director, and a son who works for a railway transportation company in the Midwest.
