Cycle Safety

For a safe and secure bicycle society

  • Realizing a safe and secure society without bicycle accidents

Of the fatal bicycle accidents that occurred in 2017, the cyclists were found to have violated the law in approximately 80% of cases. In other words, these accidents could have been prevented if cyclists had followed traffic rules. In order to reduce such unfortunate accidents, it is important not only to improve the bicycle riding environment, but also for cyclists to follow traffic rules.

Going forward, with the aim of achieving zero bicycle traffic accidents, the city will actively work to raise people's safety awareness, including publicizing traffic rules using the "Five Rules for Safe Bicycle Use," steadily implementing the bicycle driver training system, and raising awareness of helmet use.

  • Emphasizing the importance of inspection and maintenance, which is essential for safe bicycle riding

Unlike automobiles and motorcycles, bicycle maintenance tends to be overlooked. However, there are many traffic accidents caused by poor bicycle maintenance. In order to prevent such accidents, consumers need to choose safe products when purchasing bicycles and have them inspected and maintained regularly after purchase.

To achieve this, we will support the development of human resources with the knowledge and skills required for safe bicycle manufacturing and inspection and maintenance.

  • Utilizing the "Five Rules for Safe Bicycle Use,"
    Raising awareness of traffic rules

Perhaps because bicycles are casual vehicles that do not require a driver's license, many people do not understand the rules for riding bicycles, which often leads to accidents. In order to prevent accidents, it is necessary for all cyclists to remember the rules, but a major issue is that there are few opportunities to learn the rules. Therefore, we will be conducting public relations activities using the "Five Rules for Safe Bicycle Use," which summarizes the rules for bicycles, and will be promoting the wearing of helmets when riding bicycles, based on the fact that wearing helmets reduces the damage caused by serious accidents.

  • Aiming to improve education on traffic safety

In recent years, as part of traffic safety education in elementary and junior high schools, bicycle simulators have been used and stuntmen have been used to recreate Scared Straight accidents, allowing children and students to take part in these hands-on traffic safety classes.
In the future, we plan to take it a step further and improve our educational content by incorporating overseas transportation education methods.
