'She is obviously very careful': Hard going for ASIC as Star's chief lawyer takes stand
ASIC barrister James Arnott SC struggled to get Star’s former chief lawyer to admit much, beyond the fact that her name was Paula Martin.
On Day 13 of the ASIC’s blockbuster case against the directors and executives of the Star Entertainment Group in the Federal Court, Justice Michael Lee had some advice for the corporate cop.
For the best part of an hour on Monday, ASIC barrister James Arnott SC had found it hard work getting Paula Martin, the Star’s former chief lawyer, to admit anything - beyond the fact that her name was Paula Martin.
Martin was the Star’s group general counsel and company secretary from 2012-2019 and its chief legal and risk officer and company secretary from 2019-2022. So, she knows where most of the bodies are buried.
But most of Arnott’s questions were met with pauses of 10 seconds or more. He would be asked to repeat the question and wait for Martin to again ponder her response. If he was lucky, he might get one word - which was invariably "no".
