Tally and the Sealed Kingdom is the sequel to Molly Landgraff's first novel, Tally the Witch. It's the sort of sequel I like - one where it stays true to the atmosphere of its predecessor, but expands upon it in many ways. There are more Points of View now, giving the reader insight into more characters' thoughts and growth outside of Tally. The setting is heavily-expanded, resulting in higher stakes when the plot comes to a head. Of course, the titular protagonist remains likable and compelling, and the continuation of her arc feels natural.

While I enjoyed Tally the Witch, its sequel really shines with its balanced handling of multiple story arcs, each one feeling as important as the other. It provided more of everything that made the first book good without feeling bloated. I immediately craved a sequel once I had finished Tally and the Sealed Kingdom, but I felt confident that the third part would be just as good as the first two, if not better.

I really enjoyed this romp through a fantasy world of magic and lost kingdoms. The author manages to weave two separate stories of close friends together while also capturing the strong heart that flowed through the first book. I can’t wait to see the third book released!

I wrote a review of the first book in the series and I do recommend both books heartily.

Sealed Kingdom diverges from Tally the Witch in that it has several POV characters, and that took a little getting used to but is an understandable decision, especially as the books are written from a first person perspective and it'd be more jarring to shift to third person than to swap around the points of view. Besides, it's interesting to get a look inside the heads of the other characters. I'm not 100% if a summary of the first book from each pov character was necessary, but it's a minor gripe, and really, my only one.

Molly Landgraff continues to offer tight writing and while the adult reader will presumably catch at least some of he plot twists early, I admit that I was surprised at some ways the tale was wound - and in a good way. Following multiple plot-threads thanks to the new points of view, there's a definitive "middle of a trilogy" feel to the endpoints, but the ride is entertaining on the way there. And it'll no doubt leave the reader chomping at the bit for he final installment - I know I am.

Good follow up to Tally the Witch, with the characters a little older and dealing with more complicated issues. The setting is also expanded, with political and factional plots.

Tally's TG status and the issues surrounding that are brought up a little more. In the first book, it seemed like it was essentially ignored after she meets the witches.

The author switches between several different viewpoints, all in the first person. I wonder if the book might have been stronger with fewer POVs. Most of the characters were in the same place at the same time. I'd be in favor of either reducing the number of first person views or doing it all in third person.

Tally is at the center of a new adventure as foreseen by the Queen of the Faye. Going to another land to fight an assassin and save a lost land.
