HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Changes are coming to Maui’s only daily newspaper.

Starting June 6, the Maui News, which has been in business since 1900, says it will provide the majority of its news content online at mauinews.com and will produce a printed edition only on Thursdays.

In a letter to readers, publisher Chris Minford said, in part, “This is the future of local news, and the transition will allow staff to continue serving its readers in the most effective manner.”

Some workers say the change is a mistake.

“A lot of our subscribers, as I said, like to pick up the newspaper and read it that way. Some of them don’t have online access or don’t care to have online access. So we feel that this is a huge loss for the community a huge loss of a shining star, icon. You know, community resource that will probably never be back,” Sportswriter Robert Collia said.

Contract negotiations started four years ago and are continuing with West Virginia-based owner Ogden Newspapers.

Minford told Hawaii News Now no layoffs or pay cuts have been made or announced.

In a statement he said, “We have sent letters to the unions requesting meeting dates and times to begin discussing changes. Changes will occur and we will be working through them in the coming weeks.”
