Wiki Migration Guide

wiki.gnome.org has been replaced by a set of new solutions, and was archived on 23 October 2024. The wiki content is still readable, but it is not possible to make changes. This page provides information for existing users of the wiki who need guidance.

Background

For background on this initiative, see the What to do with the GNOME wiki? blog post, as well as the wiki.gnome.org retirement - feedback wanted Discourse thread.

What is going to happen to the wiki?

On 23 October 2024, the wiki was turned into a static, read-only site. The old content is still available at wiki.gnome.org. As a result of this change, those who are using the wiki will need to find alternative solutions.

Wiki replacements

The following are the recommended solutions to replace the wiki:

handbook.gnome.org

This is a new documentation site which contains general project documentation. It is the recommended replacement for any project-level documentation. Community members are encouraged to contribute to it (see the guide in the project README).

Internal docs for teams, apps, and development projects will not be included in the handbook.

apps.gnome.org

This site provides home pages for GNOME apps, and replaces the wiki pages found under https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps.

welcome.gnome.org

This new site provides information for new GNOME contributors. It replaces the newcomers wiki pages, found at https://wiki.gnome.org/Newcomers. It is where development projects and teams should host their onboarding docs.

hedgedoc.gnome.org

This general purpose notes platform can be used for ad hoc documentation. It’s a great platform for collaboration.

gitlab.gnome.org

Most team and project documentation is expected to be stored in GitLab, in the form of:

  • project wikis (example)
  • project and team README files
  • docs files stored in project repos (these could be dedicated docs repos, or docs that are kept alongside code)
  • Gitlab profiles (to replace wiki user pages)

As a wiki user, what do I need to do?

How to find information

You can continue to use the wiki for as long as you want. However, it is recommended to use the replacement solutions instead wherever possible, as these are expected to contain more up to date information. If you find omissions or problems with the new solutions, please point them out by creating issue reports, or help to fix them.

How to transition wiki content to other solutions

If you maintain wiki content which is actively used and needed, please migrate it to one of the wiki replacement solutions as soon as possible. Some guidelines for this:

  • When migrating content to a new location, the old content on the wiki should be left in place as it is. However, if you want to direct to the new location, feel free to add a link at the top of the page to the newer resource.
  • Please only migrate content that is up to date and actively used. Any old wiki content will continue to be available as an archive, so it will not be lost.
  • If you are unsure about where to migrate your content to, you can ask for guidance on the Pages Matrix channel.
