When you're drawing your comics, how much planning do you do before hand like for story, paneling and what not?
Honestly, probably not as much as you’d expect.
The story, yes, that did have a lot of planning behind it, and most of that was more first figuring out the beginning and the end with bits in between sorted out. From there it was extending on the events between the beginning and end so the flow of the story all made sense.
From there I go straight into storyboarding. I know many artists do a script first, where they write down exactly what happens in the scene, who says what, etc. I don’t do this step because I’m a pretty terrible writer and it would be more of a back-step for me in the process. My storyboards are usually very quick and I usually complete them a month before the chapter debuts. Though I have how I want the scenes to go in my head, this helps in showing how the scene will look on paper and how the text and panels are arranged, etc.
Here’s an example of the format for my storyboarding:

The idea is that I try to draw some very simple thumbnails of everything on the page and where it should all go (if I don’t like it, I put a sticky note over it and try a new composition). One thing that I’d highly recommend if you plan to do a step like this is write down and label the text and where it goes. Like on the page I put the letter “A” down and then write down the text on the side that goes with letter “A”. It helps a lot so you don’t have to make up the text as you do the actual page or have to go back to the scrpit for those who do that.
But yeah, from there I go straight to doing the pages! Things may change from the storyboard to the page but that’s fine, it’s not as though the storyboard has to be the set in stone design either.
