Hello again,

Question....I was wondering at approx what age are rosy reds/fatheads sold in petstores? I bought mine a lil over a mo. ago and they are doing well, however I was wondering how I could determine their current age as was also wondering when they would be ready to spawn...unfortunately though I'm uncertain how to determine their age as I'm not sure how old they typically are when sold. I can tell you that 2 out of the three are approx 1.5 in max and the 3rd being approx 2 in. (all 3 bought same time/same location). Thanks~~Carrie~~

Hard to say. Most fish are a few months old when they get dropped in the sales tank at least.

Here's a good article that describes breeding in more detail than I have seen elsewhere.

I really do love them. Mike basically told me to go big ...research and get w/e it is I want (ofcourse research first) and tbh, I did choose of everything rosy red minnows. Yep, the 14 cent bottom feeders at the store. ....Got only 3, but spend in the hundreds already lol! Aquarium, additional aquarium (to have as spare, gd idea), food, water treatments, supplies, décor etc etc. So I joke w/ my friends that I got *very expensive ..."Cheap" fish* hehe

I have some in my pond. They are great fish. Enjoy them.
How many do you feel you have approx? Do they multiply a lot w/in your pond setting? From all I've read thus far they are constant breeders in ideal situations (water temp and hiding spots...etc) We do not have any pvc or 1/2 clay pots that I've read make really good breeding areas....we have mock logs, both are about 1.5" wide and one is a few in long while the other is approx 4.5" long. I have both facing where I can see all the way thru them

They really are a rewarding fish with unexpected personality
I'm learning that very quickly yes. I am looking forward to learning a lot about these lil guys. I just wish they were of the age in which I could tell the sex of. Ik the gray one is always in tunnel....I'm feeling he's the male "guarding the breeding area" from what I've read. The other one that size (this one rosy ..not black) is a bit more round..underneath in shape (black one quite straight...other than that they resemble one another) I can not tell for the life of me about the larger one...the 3rd one we have, (all bought same day, same place) it's a rosy about 2.5 or so in long and can't really compare shape etc to anything as it's the only one of that size/age. No fatty area on anyones head yet....ugh wish I could determine atm!! I'm dying to know!
lol

I have some rosy reds and fatheads in my pond too. They're awesome fish, but not too hardy due to how they're housed in pet stores/mass bred. They're loose schoolers but like to follow each other around sometimes.

How many do you have in your pond do you feel? I know they can breed like crazy, from everything I've read!! I like their body shape etc. Funny b/c Mike wanted neon tetras initially (and ea time we go into the store....) and I'm **** bent on minnows. He was looking at a very large corner tank to put in the living room ...thinking we could fill it w/ an assortment of fish. All I could think of when I seen it was WOW!! and (((immediately started calculating how many rosy reds could fit in there properly!!))) hehe

Mine never breed. I've tried, but they're usually not old enough from the pet store and they're so sickly they don't last long enough to breed.

Right now I only have 5...started with 20 a few months ago.

I have about a dozen. My goldfish bred, but the rosies didn't, unless they have been getting eaten. Which wouldn't surprise me. The only reason I ended up with goldfish fry is I moved some hornwort into a tub and there were eggs/fry mixed in. Then again, they might not be quite old enough.

My pond is 350 gallons. It was setup for the goldies. The rosies were for contrast.

Oh no. Are you wanting more? If so are you going to get them from a diff source other than a pet store due to the conditions they can be in and due to them not breeding etc. We purchased ours lil over a mo. ago. One is older than the rest, which is interesting b/c it was in same tank but twice the size. I'm not sure their background or breeding/handling just thought odd a much larger one was in w/ all the approx less than an inch long ones.

Sounds like a great pond you've got set up. I've heard of a lot of ppl mixing rosies w/ goldfish. Mike suggested this too (thinking he just wants to get me something other than minnows lol....but I told him I'm totally satisfied w/ them) hehe

I've never found them for sale at anywhere other than pet stores. I'd snap them up in a heartbeat if I could find some good healthy ones for sale online.

I've seen sites online advertising them for bait I believe, but I know what you mean! Are there sources better to buy them at? I am asking b/c I didn't know if ppl who breed them at home, have better stock being that as far as I know , the only places to get them from are bait shops and petshops but I'm thinking perhaps, even from those sources, if bred at home ...and obv kept healthy, if stock would be a lot healthier in the long run (if kept in good care as opposed to these places etc). I'm not sure of the process even for the shops etc acquiring them for sales etc (it's prob a story I'd cringe to read I'm betting ugh!)

I'm not sure if bait stores would be any better, but I may take a look someday.
