'Nuclear blackmail' over Taiwan: How China wants to deter the USA
China is massively expanding its nuclear forces in order to prevent the USA from intervening in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Despite a weaker economy, the official military budget once again provides for an above-average increase of 7.2 percent to 1.78 billion yuan (around 230 billion euros) compared to total expenditure. The USA estimates that China's true defense spending is 40 to 90 percent higher anyway, as many costs are covered by other budgets.
