Here's what happened on Day 5 of the CIAC Girls Basketball tournaments

Day five of the CIAC girls basketball tournaments got two classes into the semifinals.

Class L and M both played quarterfinal games Thursday while Class LL, MM and S  will play their quarterfinals Friday. All quarterfinals are played at the sites of the higher seeds.

The semifinals for L and M will be Monday, March 10 at neutral sites. LL, MM and S will play their semifinals Tuesday, March 11.

The championships will be held March 15-16 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Here's what you need to know from Day 5:

End of the line

With No. 4 Stonington beating No. 5 Northwestern, 67-44, in the Class M quarterfinals, the illustrious career of Northwestern's Maddie Topa came to an end. Topa scored a game-high 35 points in the loss and passed Desiree Elmore of Capital Prep to reach eighth on the state's all-time scoring list with 2,247 points. Elmore had 2,233 career points. Topa is the Berkshire League's second all-time leading scorer behind Gilbert's Emily Arel who finished her career the night before with 2,405 points.

Top seeds cruise

In Class L, No. 1 seeded Northwest Catholic rolled over No. 9 Bristol Eastern 86-41 behind 27 points from Abby Casper and 22 from Maeve Staunton. The Lions, who are trying to win a third-straight state championship in three different classes, will face No. 4 Notre Dame-Prep in the semifinals to be played at a neutral site on Monday. Notre Dame defeated No. 5 Amity 60-39 in that quarterfinal.

Class M top seed Windham beat No. 9 East Windsor/Bloomfield 67-30. The Class M runner-up from last season will take on No. 4 Stonington in the semifinals. Windham beat Stonington 51-42 in the ECC D-II championship game and defeated the Bears twice in the regular season.

Top performers

Abby Casper, Northwest Catholic: The junior forward scored a game-high 27 points, making five 3-pointers, in an 86-41 win over No. 9 Bristol Eastern.

Sophia Hoinsky, Stonington: The sophomore center scored 20 points to lead No. 4 Stonington to a 67-54 win over No. 5 Northwestern.

Emma Huedepohl, Bethel: In No. 2 Bethel's 54-36 win over No. 7 St. Paul, Huedepohl scored a game-high 18 points.

Kolbe McCray, Notre Dame-Prep: The freshman led the No. 4 Lancers to a 60-39 win over No. 5 Amity with a game-high 19 points.

Viktoria Michalczy, Seymour: In No. 6 Seymour's 56-32 win over No. 19 Woodland, the sophomore guard led all scorers with 19 points, knocking down two 3-pointers.

Katelyn Novak, Bacon Academy: Playing in her final home game, the senior guard made five 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 27 points, also scoring the 1,000th point of her career in the second quarter as the No. 2 Bobcats defeated No. 7 Wilcox Tech 64-30.

Maeve Staunton, Northwest Catholic: In the 86-41 win over No. 9 Bristol Eastern, the junior guard had 22 points.
