Honestly, I forget so much that, with the way Lanyon was in college, he’s probably a lot better at rough and tumble stuff than I give him credit for.

Hyde takes Lanyon to the rooftop and he treats Lanyon really delicately. He keeps Lanyon away from the edge, he doesn’t take Lanyon to the tallest buildings, he keeps an eye on Lanyon to make sure he doesn’t look like he’s about to fall off.

Then, Hyde turns his back for one second. Seconds later, there’s the sound of running footsteps and he turns back just in time to see Lanyon just launching himself off the roof.

Jekyll is internally screaming as Hyde runs to the roof edge, frantically looking for Robert below.

To their surprise, he’s on another roof along, waving up at them.

There’s a moment of silence.

Then,

“Ohhhh. Right.” Jekyll and Hyde say in unison as realisation hits them.

As it turns out, Lanyon’s been doing this sort of thing long before Jekyll and Hyde even started and he’s way better at it than they are.

Hyde is desperate not to be upstaged and the pair end up competing at rooftop hopping. Hyde wins but only because Lanyon lets him.

Jekyll spends the whole time fussing over both of their safety.

(Later, as revenge, Hyde trips Lanyon off the side of the roof only to catch him before he falls. Got to pay him back for that heart attack after all.)

THEY ARE

Lanyon keeps waking up in the middle of the night after going to bed with Jekyll only to hear the distant cacklings of Hyde from the bathroom as he practices his evil laugh. For a while, Lanyon just stares at the ceiling, bleary-eyed, wondering how his life got to this point, before going to the bathroom to reassure Hyde.

Jekyll and Hyde hurriedly commissioning lodgers to try to make something that Lanyon would love. Jekyll has no idea what to commission but Hyde commissions a robot hand that walks around and flips people off.

Jekyll is not nearly ready enough to be so crass, especially when it comes to a gift for Lanyon. Against all Jasper’s explaining that Lanyon loves him for who he is, not what he can give him, Jekyll is still fussing over it.

In the end, whatever he gets isn’t anything like Jekyll hoped, chosen in too much of a rush. Maybe it’s a simple bouquet of flowers he buys too early in his panic and all the flowers wilt by the time the event comes around.

Lanyon loves the gift that Hyde got him. He finds it hilarious. Lodgers spend the next several weeks having a robot hand sneaking up behind them to flip them off. Nobody’s safe from it. Every time anyone does anything to tick off Lanyon, they have to watch their back because that robot hand is coming for them.

Then it comes around with Jekyll’s turn and he finally chooses to take Jasper’s advice to take Lanyon on a date instead.

He takes Lanyon to some quiet last-minute place like a park since all the bigger, fancier places are fully booked (he spent too long fussing on what sort of place to book and, by the time he had decided, it was too late.)

Feebly, he tries to explain what happened and that he still loves Lanyon and he didn’t mean for this to turn out so badly.

Lanyon just gives him a curious look.

“What do you mean badly? Henry, this is wonderful! I love it!”

Jekyll, now equally confused, tries to protest that he hasn’t managed to give Lanyon some big, amazing date. They’re eating alone in a park because he didn’t even book tables in advance.

But Lanyon loves it. He has to deal with big, fancy gestures all the time, usually ones that never have any thought or love behind them. The park is beautiful, it’s quiet, and he’s there with Henry and Edward.

He doesn’t have fancy flowers but the ground is covered in all the weeds like daisies and dandelions that his father would never allow in the garden and it’s lovely in its own wilder way. Lanyon especially enjoys blowing dandelion seeds across the park. Hyde keeps taking control of Jekyll to pick grass and drop it in Lanyon’s lap.

They sit there alone, eating sandwiches, and feeding ducks for the entire date and Lanyon loves every second of it.

Yesssssss!!!

The lodgers are quite persistent. They’ve seen Lanyon shepherd Henry from the room in this way several times before, they’ve heard the pained noises, and they’re not going to leave it alone anymore.

Clearly something is wrong here and who better to help than a society of scientists? They just think Lanyon’s being stubborn by not letting them help.

Quickly, Lanyon covers Jekyll/Hyde up with his jacket while he keeps the lodgers away. It’s a feeble attempt and he doesn’t know how he’s going to get them to back off completely so Hyde can come out without problem but he’s doing all he can.

However, one of the lodgers slips past. Quietly, they make their way over to Jekyll, crouch beside him and start trying to soothe him.

It’s ok now, he’s going to get some proper help, they tell him as they reach for the jacket. There’s nothing the society hasn’t seen before so whatever it is, they can certainly-

And the jacket is pulled away and their words die in their throat.

All the lodgers finally see Hyde and they stop.

Finally, Lanyon, facing the other direction where the lodgers are, slowly turns around to see Hyde revealed to the world.

Hyde, still writhing, still panting and whining, looks up at them and they see fear in his eyes. He scrambles away desperately crawling on all fours, too pained to stand, unwilling to take his eyes off the lodger and still convulsing in agony.

He’s hyperventilating now, not just from pain but from panic as he grabs Lanyon’s leg, pleading with him to do something. 

There’s a pause. 

Then, Robert picks up his squirming friend and runs, leaving the shocked lodgers behind.

Even after Lanyon’s managed to calm him down a little, Hyde is too scared to leave the room. He just curls up in a ball on the floor and Lanyon stays with him.

They know they can’t stay there forever but, for the moment, it’s all they can do to delay the inevitable.

I do love the idea of Lanyon getting strange flowers for Jekyll or having any sort of more unusual romantic gesture - one that only fits Jekyll. Something personalised.

They’re maybe not the prettiest or most conventional flowers but they do tend to be scientifically curious ones. Venus fly traps, foxglove, poison ivy, and more, all wrapped together in a writhing, snapping mass of teeth and poison that doesn’t look very romantic but never fails to make Jekyll swoon. Instead of regular gifts, Lanyon gets Jekyll things like manticore venom or basilisk scales.

Although he doesn’t fully understand Jekyll’s adoration for such things, he always loves to see how happy it makes Jekyll.

Lanyon’s just doing all he can. Society at large might not respond well to his advances on Jekyll but, within their society, he can torment the lodgers with it all he wants. They’re all doing illegal stuff in there, nobody’s going to stop him.

I do imagine Hyde loves the attention though. Jekyll’s far more embarrassed but Lanyon and Hyde have a competition together for who can make the grandest gesture to the other. The more lodgers that groan over it, the more points earned.

Hyde is currently in the lead. As much as Lanyon tries, he can’t quite match Hyde’s flair for the dramatics.

He still doesn’t know where Hyde stole that smoke machine and chandelier from.

Henry is groaning over it along with the lodgers, though his groaning is far more affectionate.

For a moment, still half-asleep, he forgets that Hyde can take over Jekyll’s body sometimes and just has to stand there for a few seconds trying to figure out why Jekyll is laughing maniacally at the mirror, wondering if he’s actually still dreaming.

“Darling, the neighbours can’t hear Jekyll evilly laughing at this time of night, he has a reputation of not being a mad scientist to uphold.”

Oh yeah, definitely!

I imagine that, at first, things were really awkward between them.

They have a lot of history and the new addition of Hyde makes the relationship somewhat of a Victorian minefield. Nobody knows how to talk about things, what’s too smothering, what’s not enough, what could lead to another breakup and another incident like Hyde’s creation. Once they’ve found some sort of stable place in the relationship, nobody’s going anywhere.

Hyde probably would be the main factor to break through that awkwardness just because he has much less restraint when it comes to that sort of stuff. He doesn’t care about politeness.

It’s not too silly! It really does seem like something that could happen with those two/three to me.

Robert and Henry sleeping peacefully in the same bed together. Robert’s completely asleep, content from sleeping with company.

Yet, then he’s awoken by the feeling of something grabbing his back, latching onto his sleepwear so tightly that he’s dragged backwards across the bed a little.

Robert wakes up very bewildered and has barely a moment to process when he hears a terrified whimper from behind him and feels someone kick his back.

He’s still too asleep to know what’s happening but Henry seems to be having some kind of seizure. The situation is all too shocking and sudden for his doctor’s training to kick in just yet so he just hurriedly tries to stop Jekyll flailing around in case he hurts himself. 

Yet, Henry’s convulsions are violent. He can’t keep Henry still and he keeps getting kicked or clawed as Henry writhes in agony. In the end, he can only safely move things out of the way to keep Henry from knocking against them and hold Henry’s head to protect him from whiplash.

It’s as he’s trying to hold Henry’s head that Robert notices the hair between his fingers changing colour. 

For a moment, he stares at it. 

Then, (if this is a situation where he knows about Hyde), he finally realizes what’s truly happening.

Henry is desperately pleading in his half-asleep pains, begging tearfully for it to stop as Robert quickly tries to reassure him that he’s fine. Everything is going to be ok, Robert is there for him, it will all be over soon.

Robert tries to soothe Jekyll by very gently running his fingers through his hair and holding Jekyll’s hand, even as his scalp seems to shift under his touch, painfully reforming, and his grip tightens and writhes like there are snakes beneath the skin.

There’s nothing else he can do to calm the situation but hold Jekyll’s hand and reassure him, even as Jekyll squeezes back with nearly enough force to break Robert’s hand.

Then, after what seems like an eternity, it’s over. 

Jekyll’s tense grip on Robert’s hand loosens for a moment, then drops away limply. 

Heart still pounding, Robert looks down at Jekyll and finally sees Hyde.

Hyde’s eyes are closed and he’s breathing steadily, like he’s been asleep the whole time. Like nothing just happened.

However Robert, worried about the situation, quickly wakes him to check his health. 

Hyde is bleary-eyed and, for a brief moment, responds just as politely as Jekyll, too muddled by sleep to even know who he is at that moment. His accent is still Scottish and he’s rather confused.

But then he looks down at his own hand, still gripped in Lanyon’s, too small to be Jekyll’s, and he realizes what happened. 

He looks back up at Robert quickly.

Robert looks terrified, eyes wide, gripping Hyde’s hand tightly as though, if he lets go, it will happen all over again. He’s still mumbling words of comfort to Hyde about the situation, telling him that he’s fine and everything’s alright now, but Hyde can tell he’s more just saying these things to try to comfort himself.

Hyde cuddles up with Robert (Because he’s warm, Hyde would later argue, and he’s getting one another on Jekyll by having an extra night as himself) Robert clutching onto Hyde just as desperately as Jekyll did to him only moments before. 

Slowly, Hyde manages to ease Robert’s hyperventilation and panic but, even once Robert’s finally calmed down, neither of them manage to get any more sleep that night.

They just lie there awake, together, until the morning comes, cuddled in each others arms and waiting in case it happens again.

Ooooo Jekyll switching between himself and Hyde because of the high emotions involved. I love the idea of Hyde hurting Jekyll because he just wants to keep ranting!

Jekyll being furious over the break up, yelling at Lanyon in tears but, as a result of the high emotions, Hyde starts seizing control. Except, since they’re both on the same page, they’re switching rapidly between each other, giving Jekyll a massive headache and giving Lanyon more of a metaphorical headache. Nobody knows who’s yelling what.

When Jekyll storms off, Lanyon doesn’t chase after right away because it feels like they both need a few seconds after that.

Yet, after Henry spends a little too much time seething, Lanyon tracks him down again to find that he’s practically working himself into the ground again. Lanyon tries to get him to stop but, although Henry might have calmed down with time, Hyde certainly hasn’t.

Jekyll is struggling for control as Hyde spews out every horrible thing he can think of at Lanyon. He just wants to keep going but Jekyll just wants to stop. They’re switching between each other rapidly again but, this time, it really hurts because they’re not on the same page anymore.

Lanyon is doing his best to calm Hyde down so he stops hurting Henry but it’s not going so well and the pain is just getting worse and worse and worse until, finally, Jekyll and Hyde collapse, clutching their head from the pain.

Lanyon stays with them and helps them through the pain despite Hyde still holding a grudge.
