Black Lacquer by Tom Ford is a Oriental Woody fragrance for women and men. This is a new fragrance. Black Lacquer was launched in 2024. The nose behind this fragrance is Guillaume Flavigny. Top notes are Ink, Vinyl, Black Pepper and Rum; middle notes are Ebony Wood, elemi, Apricot and Peony; base note is Olibanum.

"The fragrance shines with two exclusive innovations in modern perfumery: an incandescent black lacquer accord that captures a smoky, dimensional opulence, and a Makassar ebony wood note that evokes aspects of leather and birch. Beneath the glossy surface blooms the irrepressible mystery of a dark peony accord."

In my mind Black Lacquer is a goth floral. Strong olibanum and dark wood, but the floral peony note adds a slight powdery cozy sweetness. Tom Ford sexy DNA but in a old wooden church kind of way, prefer it over Noir de noir. Its colder than most balsamic ambers go and doesn't have any vanilla, but still resinous and cozy in its enveloping density. As far as occasion goes, I can see this working more casually and even during the day depending on your personality, but not necessarily with just jeans and a tshirt, even if they are black. Since they get compared a lot, the opening is similar to CDG Black with the pepper and synthetics, BUT dry down is different enough to not be redundant if you're into this sort of scent. CDG black is more austere in the drydown, and sits closer to the skin, its almost like a filtered less cloudy version of Black Lacquer, less fuzzy and more masc.

Words that come to mind when I smell this fragrance are: Dark, clandestine, enigmatic, mysterious, Gothic, and most of all it comes off as recherché to me, which is a word I've literally never had to use unironically in a situation until now, but I think it encapsulates what this Fragrance is going for flawlessly.

This truly is an grand and intoxicating innocence of a fragrance, that has a beautiful underlying sweetness from Apricot and Peony, that really elevate all the dark accords of Ink and Vinyl in this fragrance all the more so, and I'm confident that's what contributes to its semi-addicting feeling, that associated with smelling it in the mid dry down.

I can only see this working in fall and Winter nights personally, in terms of occasions, I'd only wear this in any scenario you'd wish to wear a leather fragrance, but I'd suggest not wearing this to any formal occasions, best leave it to being worn amongst friends.

My final verdict for this fragrance is a solid 8/10, it would be higher, but the price, and lack of wearability is what's holding this back in my opinion, other than that i quite like it

This scent passing serious transformations, some I like better - some not. Vinyl is a loud opening, then you start feeling aromatic notes. In this stage it remind me pretty expensive "pure distance M", and it is too sweet for my taste, but better then PD. Thankfully sweetness slowly going out, during a hour or so... it becomes dry with complicated mix of elements and accent on ink. Love this stage, especially when it going to the stable last session with dry, little sweet, coffee/woody notes smell, you can tolerate for a long time. This is kind of strong fragrance, that still may be used casually. Interesting stuff... deserve keeping.

All I could smell was black pepper. Opening was extremely black pepper dominant and did dry to down to become a bit more blended but black pepper was still overpowering. Tom Ford’s perfumes are usually well blended but this seemed to buck the trend. Skin felt like a disproportionate cacio e pepe. Disappointed.

A dark, smoky/burnt incense with a hint of harsh/industrial vinyl in the opening that quickly fades, leaving behind only more dark, smoky/burnt incense. This is an extremely masculine fragrance. It claims to have apricot and peony, but I truly cannot detect any no matter how many times I wear this, and I would not call this a balanced fragrance at all. I would only wear this at night, and only in the fall or winter. But as I write this review, it is nighttime in the winter, and I am really loving wearing Black Lacquer right now!

Compared to other Tom Ford offerings: Noir Extreme is more floral and sweet than Black Lacquer. The incense in Noir Extreme is sweeter and less burned/smoky than the incense in Black Lacquer. The longevity and sillage of Black Lacquer is unfortunately worse than that of Noir Extreme. I prefer Black Lacquer to wear myself, but I expect a lot of men and most women would prefer Noir Extreme.

Overall: 8.5/10, I love it as a smoky masculine fragrance, but I wish it lasted longer and was a bit more balanced.

This is meditative, mysterious, and complex.
I sense lactonic aspects at some point here.

It smells like black pepper and an old ass person's wardrobe. Also I don't smell any ink but it still is a good perfume sad that the performance isn't good.

I get Encre Noire vibes from this one and for that reason alone, it's simply not worth the price. However, they absolutely nailed the name and what the scent was meant to portray.

Side notes:

Ok... fine... a higher quality and a more refined version of Encre Noire.

Dark and mysterious, almost oppressive opening which I found quite resinous and aromatic. It definitely brings to mind spilled ink but I'm not sure I can actually smell it as a note and neither the vinyl. Something here in the opening smells a little medicinal to a degree - perhaps it is the elemi. This note starts to fade after a short while, bringing forth the lovely deep woody tones from the ebony and loads of smoky olibanum. Decent staying power but doesn't project much further than arm's length, which works well for this fragrance - it doesn't need to shout. It pulls you in with its mystery and intrigue. Very sexy fragrance which would be perfect for someone moody and aloof.

This fragrance is the king of layering! You can combine it with any other sweet or vanilla-based fragrance. I tried it with "Crush on Me," "TF Vanilla sex," and "Hypnotic Poison." All of them were good, but the last one was a blast!

When I first smelled this I was hooked. It's a very complex scent made of various notes you can have fun picking out or simply enjoy as a whole which to me is a dark smoky church insence. The ink and vinyl scent is prominent in the beginning and it's strange but it calms down soon enough and becomes the dark smoky insence vibe I love.

The scent was reminiscent of vinyl records stored in a vintage wooden cabinet, but it had a peculiar, dry, and slightly off-putting aroma. Unfortunately, the overwhelming annoyance caused by the store representatives prevented me from fully appreciating the other notes. As a result, I ended up discarding the card.

Instantly hit by CDG Black. This much more expensive option dries down into something a bit smoother with less smoke but carries enough CDG dna to feel redundant. Meh.

This is my new favorite TF. Starts off smelling like plastic-y vinyl, but I mean that in the best way possible it just smells comforting and familiar. Gives way to some smokey incense notes, like a dusty wood shop that’s been burning some incense. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments with this one everyone says they’ve never smelled anything like it. Reminds me very much of Ebene Fume and Myrrhe Mystere, but more complex.

moonboibien

Tested this at a TF store. I like this, it has that Tom Ford dna . Very dark woods with some booze, and a weird plasticky note that I assume is the ink or vinyl. Can’t say it doesn’t work though, I imagine this scent working for people who wear a lot of black coats or yohji yamomoto. Very artsy and dark fragrance. 8/10

Smoky and woody, with a floral undertone. I thought it sounded interesting, and I was very surprised by how much I like it. Long-lasting and reasonably powerful. All the notes lingered on me from morning to evening.

Maybe it's just because I'm Australian, but this doesn't seem wintery or evening. This reminds me of a summer day or afternoon, with the faint smell of bushfires in the distance over the flowery smell of summer. Maybe that's niche and it's definitely not what they were trying to evoke, but it hits a sense of home in a way very few scents have.

This smells exactly at an intersection between Dark Rebel and Dark Rebel Rider to me but less "dusty" powder smell and with Tom Ford DNA and higher quality ingredients. I love dark scents and this is right up my alley. Leather, Ink, Black Pepper, dry down into a smokey woodiness.

Black Lacquer is a new release by Tom Ford that I didn't hear too much about. I just happened across an article for it one day as I was browsing the internet. Upon reading the note breakdown I knew this was gonna be one I had to experience for myself. "Ink and vinyl? What the hell is that supposed to smell like?" I asked myself. Luckily someone I knew was selling a decant of it, so I jumped at the opportunity to give it a shot. Let's get into it;

Scent:
The opening is dark, woody, and boozy. The primary notes I get are ink, vinyl, ebony wood, and rum. The strongest of the notes are the ink and vinyl. Right away I can pick up the ink, and to me it smells like if you broke open a ballpoint pen and spilled the ink onto some paper. That sharp, dark, inky aroma is at the forefront of the opening. The vinyl comes in behind with a distinct and unusual accord. The note in the fragrance is supposed to convey the aroma of a vinyl record, so I went over to my vinyl collection to see how accurate that is. To be honest, I don't get much scent off my vinyl records, maybe just a hint of a "plasticky" accord. The note in Black Lacquer is perhaps vaguely reminiscent of that, but much stronger and more so reminds me of the scent of a vinyl collectible toy; like a funko pop. It's not a bad scent, but it's definitely peculiar. This is followed by the ebony wood and rum. The ebony wood manifests as a deep, dark woodiness; it reminds me of the scent of an expensive solid wood desk in an luxury office. Lastly, the rum rounds out the opening with a sweet and spicy booziness evocative of top shelf spiced dark rum. I do get hints of the black pepper as well for some additional spice. The opening bore a strong resemblance to something I had smelled before, and it took me a while to figure it out. But once I did, it was undeniable; John Varvatos Dark Rebel. There's no leather note like Dark Rebel, but somehow the ink and vinyl notes make up for it. The dry down is boozy, woody, and warm. The primary notes I get are ebony wood, rum, vinyl, and and olibanum. The strongest of the notes are the rum and ebony wood. Both notes carry their same accords from the opening, but the ebony wood is dialed up a bit while the rum is dialed down a bit. This is followed by the vinyl and olibanum. The vinyl is still noticeable with its "plasticky" nuance, and it's actually a bit more prominent that it was in the opening. Lastly, the olibanum finishes up the dry down with a deep, warm, resinous accord. The dry down still has a likeness to Dark Rebel, but the strongest similarity is in the opening.

Performance:
Initial projection is strong and can easily fill a room. Sillage is strong as well with a dense and heavy scent trail. After a few hours the projection and sillage were unchanged. When I checked again around hour 8 the fragrance had become a skin scent, so somewhere between hour 3 and hour 8 the fragrance fell off quickly.

When to wear:
This is a fall/winter fragrance most suited for evening wear. This is not a casual wearing fragrance, and is best reserved for moments when you want to stand out and make a statement. This could be suitable for dates and perhaps black tie affairs when you want to exude masculinity. I would not wear this to the office.

Blind buy:
There are a few reasons why this is not a safe blind buy, least of which is the price. Over $400 retail for a 100ml bottle is crazy work. This fragrance is incredibly niche, and most people aren't necessarily going to want to smell like ink and vinyl. If you're interested in this fragrance I understand, because I was too; but definitely get your nose on it before committing to a full bottle.

Final verdict:
Much like the Sacred Flame by Argos I reviewed, Black Lacquer is an example of high art perfumery. Most people wont wake up wanting to smell like vinyl records and spilled ink. This fragrance walks a fine line between being a work of art, and a wearable fragrance. At the end of the day, I enjoyed wearing it. It's uber-masculine, commands attention, and guarantees nobody else around will smell like you. I expected the performance to be a little stronger considering how heavy and dark the fragrance is, but that's a little nitpicky. It's not something I see myself purchasing a full bottle of, but I could see myself keeping a decant for special occasions. Black Lacquer is one I would recommend every man experience at least once.

Scent: 9/10
Longevity: 6/10
Sillage: 10/10

My1Benji!

When I first encountered Tom Ford's Black Lacquer, I wasn’t sure if it would be my style. The name alone conjured an image of something bold, edgy, and possibly overwhelming—qualities I sometimes find difficult to pull off. Yet, the moment I sprayed it, my reservations melted away. This fragrance is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Black Lacquer unfolds with a dark, resinous opening that feels almost like stepping into a luxurious, dimly lit room filled with polished wood and glossy leather. There’s an immediate richness, almost syrupy but not sweet, balanced by smoky and slightly spicy undertones that pull you in like a whispered secret.

As it develops, the scent transitions beautifully, revealing a softer, more velvety heart that feels warm and enveloping. It’s here where the unexpected happened for me: the interplay between a soft floral aspect and the deeper, more mysterious base notes became addictive. I found myself drawn to my wrist repeatedly, each sniff offering a new nuance that felt both grounding and provocative.

The longevity of Black Lacquer is nothing short of legendary. I sprayed it on a favorite blouse, and weeks later, the scent still clung to the fabric as though it had become a part of its very weave. Even more impressive, it’s been months since I last wore my leather jacket, yet a faint but unmistakable trace of Black Lacquer still lingers in the lining. It’s as if the fragrance has imprinted itself onto my life, leaving behind an olfactory ghost that whispers elegance and intrigue every time I catch a hint of it.

In terms of projection, this isn’t a scent that shouts—it murmurs seductively. It’s confident without being abrasive, making it perfect for intimate evenings or moments when you want to leave a lasting impression without overwhelming the room.

Tom Ford’s Black Lacquer surprised me, not only because I didn’t expect to like it but because it stayed with me in such a literal and emotional sense. It’s a fragrance that feels like a signature, powerful yet understated, and capable of telling its own story long after you’ve moved on to other things. This is a scent I’ll revisit time and time, not just for its beauty but for its undeniable staying power.

Beautiful fragrance from Tom Ford. One of their best for sure. But then, as always with this brand, it's manufactured to start strong and disappear quickly to make you buy next one sooner. Given that, the price is ridiculous. There are better and cheaper niche fragrances.

Has some parallels with Boss Bottled Elixir with the woody-balsamic-amber quality but the vinyl here, while not singularly distinguishable as a note, takes it in a more interesting direction to me. The ebony wood lends to the smoky accord. Bold yet well blended. There is a vestige of kerosene heater (but not in a bad way) deep underneath everything that is nostalgic to me. Unfortunately high pricepoint, else would be an easy buy.

I didn’t expect to like Black Lacquer this much. Its strong olibanum and ebony wood notes are captivating. Like others have said. It's dark and mysterious with a touch of that Tom Ford sexiness.

Tried, very strongly liked - very convincing dark-spicy ebony note, good hefty resins, SERIOUS black pepper and (luckily for me) no massively chemical vinyl or ink accords detected. Skewing masc but any gal bold enough to wear Bois d'Ascese or CDG Black could certainly enjoy it. Would have been tempted if it weren't for a/ the price, b/ my recently bought bottle of Ebene Fume which covers the TF ebony bases, and c/ a minor revelation as I sniffed and sniffed at my wrist, trying to understand why it seemed so familiar... and realised with a thunderbolt that this one really is almost a ringer for the (absolutely deservedly famous and discontinued) Donna Karan Black Cashmere, reincarnated and upsold. With 2 precious bottles of DKBC already in the vaults, lashing out yet more money to Lauder for Black Lacquer would be more than superfluous for me. Still the Lacquer could be worthwhile if you can locate it at discount (ha!) or second hand, or if you fancy a lacquering with something spicy, dark and appealing yourself. Very much better than many of the recent TF Private Blend efforts and does genuinely justify its existence. Take a test spin first, though, to see if its tempo matches yours before risking a blind buy.

It is more in line with something that BeauFort London would produce: dark, mysterious, smoky, impressive, artistic, long lasting... and difficult to wear in public. I have all BeauFort releases before new 2024 line, and I like or love them all, but can wear them only at home for myself, or when I'm planning to hang out in company of fragheadz.
Still on the fence if it is full bottle worthy for me, even after 2 wearings of sample scent itself firmly sits right in between like and love for me.
Honestly, if not for the price tag, I probably would already bought it though. But I'm not willing to pay for it more than $200, and as of now it only buys me 30ml bottle. And I hate them lil baby bottles! LOL. Will try remaining in the tester juice during winter sub zero temperatures and make my mind then.

Like what someone below said, this one is a weird form of art you can wear, not everyone will like this or be able to pull off the chemistry. The bottle, so goth…the smell, industrial goth that frequents bdsm clubs. Vinyl and black latex with a carnal, unnatural and unnerving undertone. The scent of a cold individual with ink instead of blood in their veins. Harkonnen house from Dune in a bottle. Black Laquer is a difficult one to love, but will take you to unknown pleasures, and not gently. Uncivilized mechanical beast in a bottle. Shock value fragrance for the sadistic. Wear this if you want to assault the senses of those around you for amusement.

After many "misses" with the new releases from my favorite brand when I saw the launch campaign about this particular perfume I was hoping it's a breath of fresh air and something new and actually good since Estée's calamity.

So I tried it with the first chance I got..
The scent is too 1 dimensional for the asking price..
The "vinyl" note smells more like marketing than a vinyl store / or the actual scent of vinyl to me.
I'm sorry but I can't just put myself into 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 a new TF fragrance all because it's a TF fragrance.. the whole meaning of the Private Blend line was for Mr. Ford to put out a daring and risk taking scent of his liking out in the world, You can't tell me nor anyone else expert or not that you go from creations like 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝘆𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝘀 and 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 to this..; and this comes from a person that truly respects all of his legacy and pioneering throughout the years, having more than 10 Private blends.

It's sad that Mr. Ford stood down and Estée got the chains of his Perfumery department.

One thing is certain, I'll never be excited about a new Tom Ford release.. 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵.

Got a sample of this today and enjoy it more than I thought I would. It reminds me of my favourite Tom Ford Fragrance (tied with BdJ) Fougere D'argent. The vinyl accord is a bit of a reach, there isn't anything that smells like PVC..., that would be awful. It does smell dark though. Spicy and resinous. Undeniably a Tom Ford....

I didn't mind this one from Tom Ford, but like a lot of his other scents, they are good but not great.
I could wear this again from my friend's bottle or in a department store, but I wouldn't pay top dollar for it.
It has a pleasant vibe to it, and I could seriously enjoy wearing it, but it isn't a love.
I can get a large dose of mild rum (not like the rum Kilian uses), and a bit of resin and smoke, but it's mostly synthetic and not natural smelling.
I could wear this again, I think, but I wouldn't buy the bottle.

In complete agreement with SomberRed below. I'm quite neutral about the scent of this one, but I very much appreciate that it's not yet another sickly sweet vanilla bomb soyboy elixir or Aventus clone. Thanks, TF.

tested this in store and still got the tester strip fresh in hand, resinous almost incense-like, spicy, woody, not sure I get much of a vinyl or ink note, but I do get boozines from the rum as well.

I personally love it, but I can see how this would be unappealing to some people, specially with the rise of tiktok femboy homoerotic fragrances and closeted homosexuals dosing themselves in stuff like JPG elixir, Lattafa's Khamrah and the likes of it.

This smells dark, resinous (not in a sweet way), smoky, but so unique. The "chemically" comments are not entirely right or wrong, in the best way possible.
Not for the average blue or sweet fragrance enjoyer, if you fit the dark, brooding archetype this will fit you perfect. While the other TF fragrances in this line have always been great, they haven't tempted me to spend the price of a full bottle. This one changes that, I'll definitely be picking one up.

@eriksatt94 it smells nothing like encre noire, but if you can appreciate that one you may like this.

Nobody has compared it to Encre Noire by Lalique yet and I'm just gonna assume that this smells very similar to it. The notes are a bit similar with elemi and ink and the woods some are similar to EN Lalique. I'll sample it from decantx and check for myself.

To be honest, I feel that vast majority of comments here just miss the inspiration behind this scent. If you have ever entered Japanese shrines, you will understand what Black Lacquer is about.

Black Lacquer resides in a small and rare category of warm conifer scents – expensive, dark, captivating. No hinoki is listed here, but this scent captures a moment when you enter a shinto temple (often built with hinoki wood) in October, where the warm wind brings apricot-jammy sweetness from the blooming osmanthus fragrans, that mixes with dry, somewhat smoky wood and aromas of Japanese incense.

This is what Black Lacquer is about. Not vinyl (that disappears quite fast and open way for the gorgeous composition), not weirdos, not luxury.
It's about Japanese zen. Dark, sappy and yet so modest.

This is what ebene fume should have smelled like. This honestly smells like a lacquered Ebony humidor, Phil to the brim with Liga Privada cigars. Slightly smoky, slightly floral, and very Resinous. I understand that Sense of smell is very subjective, but some of these reviews are kind of far-fetched and misleading. I dont get the ink or the vinyl or the lacquer. This honestly smells like the closet I have my humidor in.

The perfect scent. For Marilyn Manson. And the likes.

This scent is something “else.”

It opens up as somewhat weird vinyl scent, reminiscent of something like vinyl record.

However, within 30 minutes, it settles down to tamed weirdness. Something quirky and murky, something dirty. Maybe something like liquorice, although it is not a liquorice scent as such.

Within first hour there are moments where the scent reminds me of Black Afghano, although this is just a hint. It does not smell like BA or the like. There is just something reminding me of BA.

All in all, a different scent.

I do not like it.

Although, I do not hate it.

No. I would not use it. However, for experimental minds… Well. This might be something that results in acquired taste.

Try before you buy.

A very strong, dark fragrance that’s not easily wearable and would rather be in the category of artistic niche. The scent profile is unique and quite beautiful in my opinion but $200 for a 30ml is crazy. I definitely think this is one of TF’s greatest releases in recent times but for that price there’s way better options. 7/10

I'm reading some really strange reviews on this fragrance , one individual claims this smells like interlude no no no i have every amouage fragrance available and it is nowhere near. I honestly think this is an amazing release I get the ink vinyl and rum dress up in a leather jacket in the cold winter months and this will do an amazing job. It is expensive though and they haven't really invested in the packaging etc open a memo fragrance or a jusbox fragrance and you will think yeah at least they have done something special here.

Underwhelming. Has a dirty smell to it. Kinda dusty, like a thrift store and a little sour. A faint hint of olive juice

I got my nose on this today. I sniffed the tester strip for an hour as I walked around the city. This is definitely a Tom Ford scent, the gritty DNA slaps you right in the face. I like the scent, but not in a million years would this be something I could wear.

Black Lacquer is very bold, very self assured. To me this is a masculine scent. This is suited for a man who is confident, strong, intelligent and capable.

There is only one person in my life who I could imagine pulling this off. He’s rich, has a garage full of Supercars. Flies first class whenever he hops on a plane. He has a collection of fancy watches. Sails and plays polo. Has a concert grand piano in his foyer and in his lounge. He’s also just the sweetest guy. And he can absolutely 100% pull this scent off. I can’t think of anyone else who could come close. I messaged him and told him to pick up a bottle, he said he’d buy one straight away. I hope he likes it lol.

It's simply amazing how increasingly meaningless from the point of view of perfumery art and increasingly expensive Ford products under Lauder's leadership are becoming. This scent does not make you want to buy it, or even apply it to your skin. A sad and minor scent, in which at the same time there is no drama or depth. Just aromachemicals. Even the bottle doesn't look like anything special.

share

Msc1977

To me this is a fir balsam, and dry woody basic perfume.
That "chemical lacquer" note is fir balsam and perhaps elemi.
I don't sell anything creative about this. No florals to speak of. Not even ina slight trace.
This is very boring.

share

alanwake

Very nice. It starts off like a more refined CdG's Black, then slowly turns into something along the lines of Terroni. Elemi is the star of the show along with incense, styrax, and ebony wood. Linear but very well done for an Estee Lauder release. I find no resemblance to Interlude Man, Myrrhe Mystère, Tobacco Oud, Oud Wood or Oud Mineralè for that matter... it does however have the typical TF aromachemicals with the synth woody base which is likely what everyone is accustomed to smelling at this point.

share

PerfumedParrot

The ebony/elemi combo in the base gives a similar DNA to Myrrh Mystere and Ebene Fume but Black Lacquer is pitch black beast. At first spray the avant-garde style of black pepper and printer toner/stationary reminded me of something Comme Des Garçons would create. It’s like a Tom Ford collaboration with Comme Des Garçons. It’s black Slytherin parchment ink splashed across diesel filled cauldrons and melted vinyl records with a peppery wood base. It’s too heavy going and dark for me but Snape would love this.

share

josenajas

Wow. I almost blind bought it when I heard Tom Ford was back. Well, he is not. I am am thankful did not overpay for this unremarkable release. It is a weak version of e ene fume. Smells nothing link ink. It is a woody fragrance and that’s it. No resemblance to the wonderful INK by Akro. Hard pass for me.

I was super excited trying this beauty. Since its my bday next week I wanted to spoil myself a bit so wanted to buy this one. Opening was amazing, but probably after 30 mins all was gone. I smelled nothing :( not sure if I do something wrong, but last few fragrances from TF don't last too long :/

share

Simply , if you know Tom Ford Oud Minérale , imagine Oud Minérale with adding incense , and powdery touch.
Personally , this is much better than the disgusting Oud Minérale. But generally , I feel it is unnecessary version . Longevity and sillage are moderate

share

scenturian

After more wearing I have a better understanding of the notes, it is inky vinylic boozy resinous peppery dark woody fragrance. Quite linear. Brings black color to my mind. My new signature. Love it a lot. Photo of my bottle can be seen above (Fragram).
It is far from Ebene Fume, Myrrhe Mystere and Tobacco Oud. Most of the reviews are biased and misleading.

share

Dr.Afro

smelled this at the Tom Ford counter was excited to see a so called new scent from this house. Smelled it and thought “ohh I have this already, it’s called Interlude!” so I’ll pass. It is nice but nothing new or amazing.

share

Fragfragbagbag

A huge improvement from the recent TF offerings. One of the few times I can discern most of the notes listed as well. To me, it smells like Ebene Fume but darker after the opening (like StringerSmell said below), and to be clear, the opening is my MF jam. Has a little Chris Rusak WEOOJLMB in the dry down too without as much dreariness (unfortunately).

Overall, this is on the right track to reclaim what TF once was but it just doesn’t go ALL the way TF. Like it’s dipping its toe in a dusty basement but says, “Nah”. With that being said I would easily wear this based on the opening to mid. I assume it would also be a crowd pleaser. The only real downside is the cost, which should be $180 for 30ML.

I like it quite a bit. Think Ebene Fume with more incense. It’s expensive but solid. Would wear.

There's incense in here, despite it missing in the note tree. I get a black smelling plum-like accord which does remind me of vintage vinyl, but that's basically it--vinyl and incense. Flat and uninspiring. I wanted to wash it off after 15 minutes. Sure it's rounded off of course, but it's ultimately very boring--unsure who this is for. Hard to see why this is getting such great reviews. Black orchid is a much more interesting scent.

I am really surprised that I like this fragrance. I'm a huge Tom Ford fan but there are a couple that I don't like, such as Rose Prick and Tubereuse Nue.

This reminds me a lot of something else, and I think it might be MFK Oud Satin Mood. My friend who tried this before me told me he didn't think I would like it, but I am somebody with a nose that seems to surprise everybody and I love it. I only bought a 1 oz bottle but I can almost guarantee I'll be buying a bigger bottle at some point.

To me, this fragrance is spicy, and I definitely pick up on the vinyl after wearing it for about 7 or 8 minutes. It's not bitter, but rather warm on my skin and I feel like it would layer very well with other scents, including those with vanilla. I plan on layering it with Vanilla Sex later even though I'm honestly not a huge fan of vanilla sex.

I feel like a definitely leans more masculine, which I usually try to avoid as a woman, but I'm sort of getting over that. I see there are plenty of women wearing fragrances like this and it seems to work for them! Not sure I would wear this during the day, as it seems dark and mysterious enough for night time wear. I would like to smell it on myself or somebody I'm dating, perhaps. But yeah, I'm really pleasantly surprised. They owed me one for trying to reformulate my beloved Vanilla Fatale.

All I get is unpleasant smoke that sometimes feels like burnt plastic and sometimes like BBQ

It is in no way similar to Tobacco Oud, Plum Japonais or Ebene Fume as others have written before me, it's bullshit

share

MichelleAntonia

I'm shocked. I usually HAAATE anything with an ink note, I mean loathe. But I love this! Perhaps it's because I don't smell that; I don't smell the "vinyl" either. It actually smells much closer to an old school Tom Ford than even Myrrh Mystere or Ebene Fume (Tobacco Oud maybe?). The ebony, olibanum, and rum really stand out. Lasting power is also surprisingly impressive for Estee Lauder-era TF.

They got everything right with this fragrance the only downside is the price £290 for 50ml i can't get past it even if the ingredients are of high quality. It is a pickle to be in because I absolutely love the fragrance i recently discovered jusbox fragrances i bought black powder and 54 and I love the house and the story, as each fragrance relates to a band black powder (nirvana) etc. I think black lacquer fits that house more than the tom ford brand this would look really good in their packaging and related to a band like pearl jam and the song black. I would probably buy this eventually if it is discounted somewhere it's a great scent

share

Captain Odour

An uninspired mashup of Ebene Fume and Tobacco Oud. There'll be no long soliloquy from me about this fragrance. Let me be clear, it's good. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not reinventing the wheel. I thought the vinyl and rum would excite me more, but I can't even give it points for being novel. It's well blended and almost cautious. If you liked Tobacco Oud, you'll like this. But if you still own Tobacco Oud, you can safely skip this one without missing anything.

Longevity is great as is the projection. I'd expect nothing less from Tom Ford. I would, however, expect something more inventive for the eye watering asking price of $400.

share

humean

What an opening! The vinyl accord is wonderful. The dark smoky wood that follows is not exactly unique among the Tom Ford oeuvre - Tobacco Oud and Sahara Noir come to mind - but it is very nice.

To my nose, this is the best Tom Ford release in a long time - it's still not worth the asking price but is at least worth sampling.

Black Laquer💿🖊️🌸 opens with a captivating blend of sweet, fruity notes and rich florals. It is complex fragrance but you can smell the burnt plastic scent of vinyl on it with hints of resin and spice. On the initial wear it is a very unique, sophisticated scent but the dry down made me not like it very much. Totally masculine, long lasting perfume. Overall 7/10- wouldn’t buy a full bottle

share

Sample on hand. Instantly made me think of Dark Rebel Rider + Dark Rebel from JV. I prefer both of the JV scents over this, but I'm guessing the TF performance will be better than JV. It's a good smell! But this boozy, leathery/niche feel, for the money, is probably better spent on either Dark Rebel Rider or Dark Rebel if you can find them. I don't get the ink or the vinyl idea, although I wanted to & love the idea of it. Masculine, spicy/woody, a good go for TF, but no chance I'm buying it :) haha

share

Noseofthedepth

A very unique and elegant smell. It's definitely unisex, and I wouldn't say that it's more masculine or feminine. It reminds me of a new book, or a clean library, and the excitement it comes with. The projection isn't so great, and nor should it be, the point is for others, akin to a book, to want to discover you

Compared to other recent releases, this is the most Tom Ford smelling scent I’ve smelled in a while, and it’s gorgeous.

In the same world as Ebene Fume and Myrrh Mystere and the more elegant amber centered releases, Black Lacquer has a solid seat at the table imo. The fantasy notes in the opening add to the overall experience but don’t define the fragrance as the name suggests that it would. I was pleasantly surprised when smooth booze, deep woods, warm spice and sensual and elevated amber collided beautifully in this modern take on a classic private collection profile.

I’ll come back with updates after a full wear, but I feel firmly this may be one of the best releases since the acquisition.

Update: I remain firm… best TF release since the acquisition. The longevity is so good on this, the sprays on my HANDS are going strong after 6 hours and handwashing. A little goes a long way for me. But even with that, this doesn’t become cloying or overwhelming… it is SO WELL DONE. This one is definitely worth the cost to me.

On skin I get a beautiful incense. The type you would use as bakhoor to scent your surroundings and yourself… as a westerner, do you know how good a scent must be for us to want to use it that way? Usually we separate home scents from personal scents and make clear distinctions.

But, Black Lacquer is a vibe. Stunning start to end with the florals making the briefest welcome appearance in the mid and the finish being a sueded frankincense. A must have for me.

share

Sting Key

@scenturian Tom Ford is designer brand. They are a company that focuses on fashion, and perfumery is only a small fraction of it. Tom Ford has never been niche, nor will it ever be niche. Tom Fords are designer fragrances, no matter what. This is a literal fact and there is nothing you can say to make it otherwise.

I advise you to, at the very least, read the definition before you come across as a confidently incorrect moron.

share

parfumetvie

@scenturian for the purpose of fragrance, Tom Ford is in fact designer, because the brand, as a fashion designer, creates more than just fragrance. By fragrance world definition, niche fragrances are created by brands who specialize and create fragrances ONLY- not clothes, shoes, handbags, but only fragrances. Niche fragrances are not defined by price, quality of ingredients, etc.

Sorry but you are an absolutely useless dumb too.
Did I say that I like or give a f.ck to the niche concept?
I just group perfumes into 2; good quality or shit, I don't give a f.ck if designer or niche.
Beside these all the niche perfumes which I bought either ended up in the thrash bin or given to the someone else. I have yet to come across a really good quality niche perfume, small businesses backed by youtube pushing s.it as niche. And yes I don't trade perfumes, I just throw them. The people who can't afford Tom Ford bashing being a designer, wtf?
And last but not least if Tom Ford cared for niche he would come with another brand too instead marketing with his name, gotcha?
Now silently go back to your play-garden, enjoy your great niches.

share

Gravemind98

@scenturian Tom Ford is designer. It’s not a matter of opinion, it’s not up for debate, doesn’t matter if it’s private line or main line. I don’t care if they make the highest quality fragrance of all time with the best, most exotic ingredients and put a $5,000 price tag on it. It will NEVER be niche, by definition. This debate is the dumbest thing ever. No matter what they release, Tom Ford is a designer brand. That’s not an insult, it’s a literal fact

share

For a moment; a fleeting moment after spraying, this fragrance is an exact copy of the sublime M7 by YSL, which for me is Tom Ford's pre-eminent creation and his finest hour. For those few minutes I was in ecstasy - I'll buy it for that spectacular opening alone.

share

OHLAWDTOMFAWD

I honestly like this alot. It is in the Ebene Fume/Myrhh Mystere family, but darker and a boozy element. Very peppery, boozy, rugged type of fragrance that comes off almost smoky but not quite.

This is the character from a Tom Ford Fragrance that I love. Some will love. Some will hate and that's fine. I happen to love.

Interesting. I’m trying this out. First impressions. If there is a Tom Ford dna then this is not it. The opening, if I was blindfolded, was like a comme des garçons style. A kind of wonderwood blended with some oud and incense, if that makes sense. It opens with very dry, fragrant woods, don’t get the rum accord at all, just a dark wood and incense hit, evocative of an old church. This is a bit off putting to me. 2 hours later I get a more rounded smokiness and wood, sweeter with that dark rum accord there but only just.

For me I can’t imagine wearing this daily, I could imagine it for a formal dinner or black tie event. It’s not very versatile but certainly very well crafted. It just doesn’t feel ‘Tom forded’ to my nose. I’m thinking about it…

Black Lacquer comes across as a less full bodied interpretation of Nishane's Pachuli Kozha with the former substituting the latter's honeyed chamomile note for a sweet and smoky incense twist. You can tell you've "made it" as a perfume house when Tom Ford releases a dupe of one of your lesser known fragrances from 10 years ago and markets it as a "return to form".

Dark woods with resins, ink and vinyl notes. Black pepper note is very dominant with the woody notes. Reminds me a bit of Myrrh Mystere and a bit of Oud Wood, but that is all. This is completely different.

Most of the reviews are ridiculous.

Black Lacquer ❣. New Tom Release 2024 is a velvety, dark perfume with woody, fruity, and floral touches.
I tried Black Lacquer yesterday and liked it. This scent opens with a woody, smoky, almost chocolatey vibes.
By the way, the perfume is much more enjoyable on the skin than on a tester strip. Please try the perfume on the skin.
As it develops, it becomes warm, comforting, and more floral, with a charming appeal. Despite the unusual notes of this fragrance—vinyl, ink, rum, black pepper, ebony wood, peony, elemi, apricot, and olibanum—it’s not as strange as you might expect.

Although it’s not groundbreaking, Black Lacquer is a lovely, wearable, and reasonably unisex scent for the general public—who deserves more than the usual fruitchoulis.
Black Lacquer has olfactory cousins like Ebene Fumé, Comme de Garçons Black, and Myrrhe Mystere. If you already own Ebene Fumé and got it at a reasonable price, from a discount store, this release might feel redundant in your collection.

Performance-wise, it’s decent—not a beast, but noticeable within your scent bubble. I would use it in autumn and winter.

[Black Lacquer]
⚫️⚫️⚫️⚪️⚪️

Black Lacquer is lovely, albeit wholly unoriginal. This is a riff on their own Tobacco Oud and even closer still to Kersone’s Broken Theories due to the generous helping of clove. Black pepper is another key note here and brings to mind a sort of Comme De Garçons Black (2013) pre-arson. The pepper is supported by the spicy, incense-y amber (labdanum) accord working with the cedar, sandalwood and vetiver.

Moments of mahogany (and alike) can be felt during the wear. Black Lacquer can also smell a little like being cooped up in an Audi on a blistering hot summer’s day.

Interesting concept but pretty underwhelming execution.

This fragrance pushes pepper to the top, which is pretty horrid. Takes a while for the pepper to settle down, and then becomes a rather uninspiring incense fragrance. Underwhelming.

Smells like a purse after a pen exploded in it in the best way.

The amalgamation of the leather or fake leather purse, its belongings, the make up powder that may have spilled out once or twice, lipstick that may have melted from the sun, all mixed with a pen that leaked or exploded.

I smell ink and hot radiating ebony wood the most. There is an underlying sweetness that blends with the ink so well.

I’ve seen comparisons to Ebene Fume, Bois Marocain, and Myrrhe Mystere. I can see that SLIGHTLY. However, Bois Marocain (the newest re release) is not like Ebene Fume or Myrrhe Mystere at all. Moreover, Black Lacquer is no where near as sweet as Ebene Fume or Myrrhe Mystere and not like Bois AT ALL. I think Black Lacquer is better than all of them. With Bois Marocain next. I think Ebene and Myrre are too sweet for my liking while Black Lacquer is not.

Extremely unique blend for a tom ford fragrance, amazing - almost niche - quality. Definitely not for wear to any place but a nice fragrance if you’re into more dark fragrances. Gives off an incense smell in the dry down reminiscent to that of a church.

share

Dear Neville

In the air and on test strip you definitely get the Vinyl , Laquer accords , but on my skin those accords dissipate quickly revealing a smoky incense or wood . It reminded me a lot like tobacco oud and to a lesser degree ebene fume . This is a rather daring formulation by TF but to me it’s almost an unfinished experimental fragrance .

Smoky, woody, resinous, heavenly. TF have actually outdone themselves following many many lacklustre releases (I really wanted OW Parfum to be it, it isn't...)

Layers heavenly with Oud Wood EDP (the terrible 2024 formulation, mind you: I wouldn't muddle my precious older batch by any layering combo!) The roundness and suede complement the sharpness of this perfectly, especially in the opening.

I get the comparisons drawn to other woody, smoky Private Blends but this is very unique and distinctive. Definitely recommend (from a discounter: I would only pay 290GBP for a top 100ml niche, not a TF)

Horrid!

share

I had high expectations for this fragrance given its name, packaging, and concept. However, it ultimately falls short. While not inherently a bad scent, it lacks originality and fails to bring anything new to the table. Tom Ford was once known for bold and innovative fragrances, but recent releases seem to prioritize marketing over creativity. "Black Lacquer" bears a striking resemblance to several of their other scents, such as Ebene Fume, Bois Marocain, and Myrrhe Mystere—essentially variations of the same formula with minor tweaks. Additionally, it echoes established fragrances like Arso by Profumum Roma and Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens. This lack of innovation is disappointing, particularly given the premium pricing. Since Estée Lauder's acquisition, it feels like Tom Ford is relying on brand loyalty rather than delivering the unique experiences they were once known for. Given their recent business model, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a "Parfum" version released soon.

This starts off smelling really woody and smoky and almost choclatey, not long after starts to smell like latex mixed with smoky woods. Which honestly I really like. But the drydown develops this odd sourness and sweetness which I don't really like. It's not awful but kinda weird when mixing with the smoky woods that takes a back seat as the sweetness and sourness comes through. Doesn't really resonate with me, but still a good unique pick. The price is insane though, over $500 CAD for a 50ml.

Overall 6.5/10

Jay67

I’ve given it a couple of test drives now and it’s growing on me. It’s more inventive than the recent TF releases for sure and a little more ‘out there’ for the brand but it does lean rather niche and I’m not convinced it’ll do hugely well commercially but it’s certainly worth testing and giving a few wears if you can get a sample or two. Its ‘edgy’ but only insofar as modern-day Esteé Lauder/TF fragrances go in the market and in some respects, harks back to earlier TF days when he had creative control.

If I was given this in a blind sniff test then I doubt I’d guess it was a TF release, other than a vague hint at Ebene Fume and an extremely distant nod to an element of the dry-down in Plum Japonais but if pressed to name the brand, I’d have said Comme de Garçons, as it has obvious facets from many of their releases and also maybe D.S & Durga too: the Far East influences are definitely present here, parallel to the name. As it dries down further, I’m also definitely getting a hit of green as in Italian Cypress.

Significantly more enjoyable on skin than it is off of a tester strip (or black ribbon as the counters seem to be using for it) so a skin test is essential for this one.

I’ve also managed to get my nose on the upcoming (supposedly [in the UK at least] Harrods exclusive) TF Amber Intrigue and of the two releases, in my personal opinion at least, Black Lacquer is by far the better of the two.

Essentially a peppery incense perfume. I feel that Donna Karan Black Cashmere rocked the same profile better.

This is a velvety soft dark perfume with an edge. It smells like you walked into a very well appointed mansion at Christmas for brunch and you can tell they had a fire in the fireplace the night before. You can also smell the faint remnants of scented holiday candles, wrapping paper and Christmas cards. But the tree there is fake, because you can’t pick up any pine, fir, etc. You do get the ebony though, and it is scrumptious!
This layers well with smoked cherry, tobacco vanilla and Vanille fatale. I wore it by itself all day and loved it, but for the first time in a very long time, I got feedback from others that it was too strong and they didn’t care for it. 🥴 That’s what prompted me to layer because I didn’t have the time to shower just then. I really like this, but I will reserve it for the much cooler months, or when I’m going to be alone.

It's unique, I'll give them that. It's definitely niche. But I personally don't like it. It opens with a plastic smell mixed with ink. It evolves into a incense heavy woody smell.

On tester strip i hated it. On skin it’s nice, heavy on incense.

Black Lacquer ✽✽✽✽

Might be the first great release of Tom Ford since...ever? Very similar to Comme de Garçons Black with more sweetness while still being dark and potent. Backbone of the fragrance is also quite similar to Akro Ink.
Dark, heavy, sweet smoky "Tom Ford" creation that feels artistic and niche.

The price tag is utterly ridiculous though.

WTH?? Lol! I drove 35 miles to see my friend at Neiman’s spray this on & get a couple boxed samples & Do I like it? Yes! But not falling the cool looking notes listed above!! A record!! lol!! Speaking for myself I am no dummy & Mr Ford is apparently running out of ideas. And for those of you like myself who’ve smelled Comme Des Garçons “Black” or Tiziana Terenzi “Laudano Nero” I could go on! Bvgari Black!! “Black Afgano” All of the aforementioned I own & see similarities. It’s more of a sweet rubber sorta plastic like smell & not necessarily a vinyl, which to be clear, I like!! But Vinyl? The record?? Yeah, Ok!! Along with That black Tom Ford bottle, That’s gonna real alot of ya”ll isn’t it? YouTubers already headlining there videos as⚡️BAD BOY FRAGRANCE!!! lol!😂 🤔 I am a bad boy & Laudano Nero not only kills this, It’s richer & projects better & lasts thru rain sleet & snow!! This is a little more softer..Again it’s good, But Let’s refrain from the bad boy talk a bit

I tested this earlier this week, fortunately, at a department store in Melbourne CBD that has Black Lacquer 30ml, 50ml and 150ml available earlier than the wider Australian release (apparently, or maybe that’s what the sales rep sold me, haha).

I’ll be honest, the opening quickly reminded me of a tamer, more rounded version of Comme de Garçons Black. But as the CDG dries down and becomes sweeter, almost a slight caramel to my nose, this is the representation I felt in the opening of Black Lacquer. Albeit it beautiful, it was familiar. The vinyl note is present, blended well and not at all screechy in the first 15 minutes of spraying.

Then after 15-30 minutes I could barely get more beyond some muted smoke, cool woods and slightly resinous sweetness. Almost a skin scent. But that’s when things shifted slightly… after 60-90 minutes the whole scent shifted and moved into a beautifully resinous and elegantly blended experience. Sure, it still wasn’t strong but it was intensely beautiful to and still stronger, deeper, more resonant than the 15-30 minutes after spraying (odd, I know, but my experience).

One of the stunning additions in this fragrance to me is the apricot. Once the fragrance really dried down this note permeates with stone fruit sweetness, alongside the peony and elemi surrounding the olibanum and ebony wood. This dry down surrounded me for hours and hours, presenting itself with its grounding, rich and comforting scent for the rest of the day.

Definitely a close scent, there’s no getting around that. If you want this to be loud, you’re going to be disappointed. But… it’s really quite stunning and undoubtedly has that Tom Ford DNA in spades. Could be the eldest brother of Ébène Fumé and Myrrhe Mystère.

I ended up splurging on a 50ml bottle today, I just couldn’t stop myself. That dry down was just so incredibly delicious that although I’d love for others to smell the beauty surrounding me, and if it was an intimate occasion then that would definitely be the case, I just couldn’t get it out of my head. Happy to have bought it, can’t imagine many beyond fragrance enthusiasts will really cling to this tbh.

Looking forward to trying this out in different settings. Will be interesting to see if maceration plays a role with projection after some time, although this honestly doesn’t matter too much to me.

Yes, it’s arguably overpriced for what it is, but the presentation (swoon) and elegance within the blending made it a worthwhile purchase in my book… and I’ll keep telling myself that whilst I cook rice with soy sauce for the rest of the week.

Kind of a disappointment it's way too similar to Ebene Fume in fact the backbone is identical with only very minor tweaks. They are 100% redundant. Ebene Fume is all around better and at this point cheaper to boot, when you shop at discounters! I had super high hopes for this one

Black Lacquer's olfactory peaks and valleys do conjure visages of TF's of old.
However, I think it lack novelty. To my nose, BL feels like a mish mash of Myrrhe Mystere & Ebene Fume.

In addition the bottle is not as good looking as the picture and AD renderings suggest.
The actual print label font looks unfocused and low res.

I probably should have gaged my expectations a tad bit lower?
Nevertheless, I don't think it is worth the price.

Scratch & Sniff

Ugh, Tom Ford has done it again…and I don’t mean that as a compliment. This is a vinyl scent that fails to play.

Despite my better judgment, I was rather excited to try Tom Ford’s latest addition, Black Lacquer. I was deeply mistaken. This is the scent of Tom Ford in 2024: which is to say that it's the scent of mediocrity and resting on your laurels.

If it sounds like I hate Tom Ford, that's because, well, I do. That wasn't always the case, sadly. I used to love Tom Ford fragrances once upon a time (like, a decade ago, before Tom Ford literally sold out his brand to Estée Lauder and before, frankly, I got better taste). Since then, I feel like his scents have been dumbed down, watered down, reformulated, and then mass-marketed to a nouveau-riche, designer-logo-wearing public that has more credit card debt than taste.

Yet I was willing to give Black Lacquer a shot, as I love nothing more than an ink note in fragrances, and I was intrigued by the additional note of vinyl. I also fell victim to the marketing imagery which was, admittedly, gorgeous (Tom Ford, please use the obscene cost of this fragrance to give your promotional team a raise).

Upon initial spray, I will concede that there is the briefest hint of Tom Ford blindly stumbling onto something promising…but that must’ve just been the ink in his eyes. Initially, there’s a charismatic interplay between those top notes of ink and vinyl. Within minutes, though, Black Lacquer quickly settles into the same inevitable cheap trick that Tom Ford has been playing for years. The charming ink and vinyl notes quickly get lost in an overwhelming black forest of ebony woods…which is not exactly a groundbreaking scent, for neither Tom Ford nor perfumery at large. Yes, it smells like freshly polished ebony wood. And yes, that scent has been overplayed.

This isn’t to say that I actually despise this fragrance. These ebony woods still aren’t the black sheep of the Tom Ford line. That particular accolade goes to Vanilla Sex, one of his other most recent creations – a scent that achieved the opposite of its intention, and which made me go immediately limp upon smelling it.

Black Lacquer still manages to be vaguely appealing, even if that vinyl note is only playing a superficial recording of the greatest hits of Tom Ford’s previous fragrances. Regrettably, Black Lacquer is still derivative and interchangeable with much of the Tom Ford line. It retains the same DNA as all the other Tom Ford fragrances, and it ultimately smells like a mishmash of his previous scents. It smells as though Black Orchid, Fucking Fabulous, and some of Tom Ford's other trademark scents had a not-so-fabulous-fuck-fest-orgy between themselves, and no one got off.

Unfortunately, the only one getting off here is Tom Ford, as he's phoning this fragrance in and super-charging for it. The most offensive component to Black Lacquer is its longevity and price tag. The longevity on this is laughable, at barely one to two hours before it settles into a hardly-detectable skin scent. Nor is it worth the downright-criminal price tag of $255 or $405. Were Black Lacquer to be $150 to $200, I might’ve added this to my collection, but only for when I got tired of my other, far superior ink scents.

Speaking of those better scents? If you want a really cool ink scent, then I’d recommend that you ditch this broken record and instead check out Zoologist’s Squid or Stéphane Humbert Lucas’ Mortal Skin.

In five words or less: Tom Ford's poorest hits.

Having worn a lot of this for the last 7 hours. It's a nice unique release from Tom Ford. But it is very niche. You will not get compliments from this. Unless you are absolutely minted, do not save up and buy this. The price is absolutely ridiculous. If it was £100 for 100ml, I would still pass on it.

Got this from a discounter, cost me 300€ for 50ML.
This is actually a reaaally good oriental scent. Unique and familiar at the same time (familiar if you’re arab for sure).
I really enjoy the smell very very Good one from Tom Ford. Also I noticed it’s very unisex: when a man wears this you would think it is a masculine scent and vice versa for women. They really managed to make 100% unisex.
Women also enjoy this scent too. I think all the notes are noticeable for me. Overall it’s a very smoky, oriental, « in your face » type of scent.
Logevity is Amazing it is clearing Amazing around 15h+ on the skin (don’t mind haters who put bad performance feedbacks They are lying 10000%). Projection is reallly Good too but still can’t give an accurate number.

I blind bought a 30ml of this, which is rare for me. I was very intrigued and figured what the heck.

This is very interesting. I wasn’t sure what to expect based on the notes, vinyl, ink, etc. But I get mainly 2 notes: pepper and incense. In the opening it’s a very sparkly pepper, almost like it’s fizzy…not sure how else to describe it. That fizziness goes away after a few minutes, and then it’s the pepper and start to get some incense. As it gets further along the incense starts to become stronger and replaces the pepper, which becomes just a hint in the background.

This incense is different than other fragrances with the olibanum note. Maybe it’s from the other notes Tom Ford mentions (the ebony wood?), but it’s definitely different. I’m sitting here trying to think of the best way to describe it, what about it is giving me a nostalgic feeling, and it suddenly hit me: I was born and raised Catholic, and this smells like the incense they use at church. Where they light it and swing the metal thing (the thurible?). It is suspended from chains and is swung by the priest to spread the fragrant smoke of the incense. This smells like that! If you know what I’m talking about, then you know what Black Lacquer smells like.

Personally, I love it, no blind-buyer remorse here!

I tried this at Selfridge's today. Many say it's masculine leaning here, but I don't think it's "very masculine".
I'd say it's fairly unisex scent.

I've heard that this scent was inspired black lacquer handcrafts: Urushi nuri in Japan. Unfortunately Urushi doesn't have any scents in general. However, when I tried this, I immediately thought it's exactly similar or same scent of what luxurious traditional Japanese hotels smell like, due to high quality incenses, and woods for those construction or wooden bathroom (Hinoki Buro).

I also get fruitiness and floral a bit, which I believe these make it balanced to prevent leaning too masculine.

It's dark...but, very relaxing scent for me...sophisticated.

It'a be one of the best scents from Tom Ford over years...especially after Vanilla Sex was absolutely flop.

Really really good! High quality juice from TF. I didn’t want to like it, yeah I fell victim of the TF haters of latest releases but … I did love FF and Ebén Fumee also I think Bitter Peach is quite amazing, but agreed Lost Cherry it’s really unsispiring and smells of Twizzlers.
Fortunately BL is really interesting, quite refreshing and very long lasting. Extremely masculine, not Smokey as in church incense, but more in a woody way. The ink and vinyl touches are extremely interesting and the peony and apricot make it a bit sweet and fresh. Overall a winner.

To add to my previous comments, this really is the most compelling of the past couple of years of TF launches. It's interesting, dynamic, challenging, etc. Having tried it out more thoroughly today, I stand by my previous comments but will add that the vinyl note does linger longer than I had previously thought. This one will be polarising, i'd imagine, but no one can call it boring!

As soon as I tested it on skin I was trying to figure out why it smelled so familiar. Then it hit me: Comme des Garcons' Black EdT. Black Lacquer does open more balsamic than CdG Black, but within minutes, on my skin at least, it turns into a similar dry, smokey charcoal pit. Black Lacquer lasts longer, and may project slightly more, but it's been done already for much better value.

Fruity incense with dark oud. Doesn't really smell like a vinyl record but more like the namesake of some old oriental furniture stained with a black lacquer. It's mysterious and alluring. $7/ml is pricey for me so maybe if I can pick it up at $250 or less then it would be worth it. Longevity for me was a good 8+ hours and it had decent enough projection to draw people in.

Just had a try of this at department store. I was really excited due to being a massive TF fan and was also very intrigued by the notes, name and bottle. First Impression: Amazing lacquer accord in the opening. The drydown is woody and incense smoke. Patchouli and perhaps some papyrus. Doesn't project like crazy but I only tried a little bit. Longevity is seems decent. I can still smell it on my dry, fragrance eating skin, 5 hours later.

Black Lacquer - thoughts from first wear (from retail bottle):

First off, I think the name is spot on. This really does smell like glossy, black woods. Think an ebony-wood watch box or a piano, or something along those lines. Not that it smells like those items, but it evokes the image of it. Well named.

It’s definitely heavy on the dark, dry woods and olibanum/smoke. To me, those two are the major notes with very little else detectable (rum and apricot, what.. ?). Very dry with that tiny bit of TF “funk” that you find in things like Oud Wood, Noir de Noir, Black Orchid, Plum Japonais, etc. - NOT that it smells anything like any of those, but it has that signature TF component that is definitely gonna turn some people off it. Off the bat, this doesn’t seem very mass-appealing, although definitely not challenging either. I personally detest animalic, skanky, stinky stuff - so when I say “TF funk”, think those scents I mentioned above. So yeah, beware all “Compliment Bros”, this probably ain’t for you, although I reckon it will carve out a decent cult-following. That being said, first time I wore it out today for lunch, a waiter commented on it and asked which scent it was 😅

Performance generally seems decent enough. Not super beastie, but definitely noticeable in your scent bubble. It doesn’t appear to leap off my skin but seems to need some lift from breeze, aircon, movement, etc. to help it project.

To my nose, the closest cousins in the TF line-up are Bois Marocain and Ebene Fume. This should surprise no one with Ebene Fume literally translating to “Smoked ebony”… Feels like these are rather closely related although Black Lacquer, to me, seems darker, stronger, and more persistent, while Ebene Fume is a bit more “medicinal”.

I’ve read some early reviews mentioning a resemblance to Plum Japonais… eh, no. Ok, if you strip PJ entirely of it’s signature notes: i) plum/fruity notes and ii) liquor/boozy notes, then ok I can see Black Lacquer overall resembling the woody backbone of PJ. But PJ woods stay very “wet” to me, and this doesn’t. So no, don’t expect any Plum Japonais magic here.

Overall, I like this quite a lot. Not Oud Wood, Plum Japonais, For Men Extreme, Japon Noir territory - but absolutely well up there and, disregarding Oud Wood Parfum, certainly much better than anything released by TF in a long time.

I got a sample from Harry Rosen today. This only has a wisp of the vinyl accord, brand new vinyl. A bit of cold sharp juniper and spruce tip. But most of all, dusty woods, log cabin with a stone fireplace type of scent. Lots of landscape vibe to it, mineral note from cut stones and laid sunbathed woodchips. It doesn’t smell like old school TF, but it does smell old school in general. A mountain man scent, and posh jazz man with a fancy cane and designer acetate glasses’ scent. It’s good, genuinely relieving and good.

I'm really looking forward to my bottle, I ordered it blindly😁 comparison with fragrances Oud Wood/ Ebene fume/Plum japonais is very attractive to me!
Soon I will update my review with my impressions of the fragrance.

UPD 26.08

Well, I received the bottle this morning, and it's been with me for about six hours now, specifically on my wrist. I feel like I can share my impressions at this point.

The fragrance is very well composed! It’s deep and rich, reminiscent of Tom Ford’s early releases (like Black Orchid, for example). Everything listed in the fragrance notes is quite distinct, but for me, certain elements stand out more than others: ink, ebony wood, elemi (which gives the scent a fir-like note), and peony, which adds softness and a slight sweetness to the composition.

The fragrance is very cohesive, with no jarring notes. It's solid and beautiful, in my opinion, more suitable for autumn and winter, as it is warm and comforting. It’s quite unisex—I can easily imagine it on both a woman and a man.

Vegas Pauli

Being disappointed in most of the most recent Tom Ford releases, I had my doubts about Black Lacquer. I am happy to report, this is a very good, somewhat original fragrance that puts the Tom Ford brand back to where it belongs. To be fair, a smokey wood has been done by most major houses, Kilian particularly has a few nice offerings. Black Lacquer is a smokey wood, but benefits from a surprising inky/vinyl note that upon first spray does conjure up something black, smooth and shiny. I do like a fragrance with an ink note, as I wear M/MINK by Byredo. Not that BL smells anything like M/MINK but that initial blast does give BL very unique, modern and polished opening. At it’s core BL is a smoky wood and the opening note, as striking at it is, does fade off pretty quickly. Once it’s on skin, BL mellows out into a rich incense heavy, deep wood. This reminds me a lot of Ferragamo Incense Suede in that each has a Nag Champa, incense feel. I detect very little apricot and peony, but they are probably what gives BL a vague sweetness, but I find the smell of Nag Champa slightly sweet as well. The sweetness here is minimal, which serves this well. If this were any sweeter it would not work. I’d say this is more on the sweet side vs smoky or spicy but that should not deter anyone from trying this. The olibanum note is the focus here and it is complex and almost oriental in nature. This definitely has an exotic feel, like you are in an opium den or visiting a dark luxurious bar somewhere in the middle east. Overall, this is a deep, dark smooth experience and one of the best to come from this house in years. I am definitely getting a bottle.

Sampling the latest / upcoming release from the Tom Ford Private Blend collection, Black Lacquer, via a sample from Neiman Marcus, in advance of its release in the US, and it seems true to its name, a sort of dark varnish, a bit resinous, smoky, leathery, spicy, woody blend. It delivers on the name while not simply being limited to the smell of lacquer itself, a fun play on the name that is nonetheless sophisticated and high-performing. The main resins involved are olibanum and elemi, fostering a great deal of smokiness that is fortunately not overwhelming, with vetiver, black pepper, and black rum, so there are hints of spiciness and booze, also, in harmony with the smoky varnish. It comes together quite nicely, a robust, classy ensemble that seems primed for cold weather wearing, but if applied lightly, can be quite striking on a summer night just the same.

Comparison-wise, it reminds me a bit of Oud Wood Intense, albeit without much of the raw animalic power of the castoreum in OWI, so Black Lacquer is a bit smoother, a bit more restrained, less risky, less daring.

Currently, Black Lacquer only appears to be available on the house’s UK site, in its standard EDP concentration, at 290 GBP for 50ml, seemingly roughly in line with brand’s current pricing on the higher side (the lower-side pricing is 222 GBP), so presumably it’ll be priced at $405 when released in the US market later this year.

The fragrance seems to performing outstanding, with superb density and projection, not dying down much after several hours of wearing, and I expect it to last quite a while, something I’ll revise here if needed.

This is probably the first new release from Tom Ford in a number years that I’m inclined to buy, the most exciting to me, personally, since Beau de Jour in 2019.

Not nearly as strange as you think it would be by looking at the notes.

Nice salesperson at Bloomingdale’s gave me a sample today. Smells like a mix of tobacco oud, ebene fume and a tiny tiny bit of plum Japanese.

Undoubtedly masculine, very brooding… longevity is fantastic, projection is more moderate.

Black Lacquer by Tom Ford - The Dark Side of Luxury

Black Lacquer is a fragrance that wraps itself around you like a velvet shroud. From the opening notes, it's clear that this is a dark, intense fragrance, one that's not afraid to push boundaries. The ink, vinyl, and black pepper notes create a dramatic, almost industrial opening, like the scent of a rainy city street at night.

But as the fragrance dries down, a subtle sweetness begins to emerge, courtesy of the apricot note. It's a masterful touch, adding a hint of depth and warmth to the scent without ever threatening to overwhelm it. The ebony wood and elemi notes add a sense of boozy woodiness, reminiscent of a fine whiskey sipped by the fire. It's a nod to the classic Tom Ford fragrances of old, but with a modern twist.

What sets Black Lacquer apart is its exceptional blending. Unlike some of Tom Ford's earlier releases, which could sometimes feel a little disjointed, this scent is seamless. Each note works in harmony with the others, creating a fragrance that's greater than the sum of its parts. And yet, despite this harmony, Black Lacquer still manages to feel edgy, provocative.

The olibanum base note adds a sense of warmth and depth, casting a soft, ethereal shadow that trails behind the fragrance. It's the perfect counterpoint to the dark, boozy notes that precede it, a reminder that even in the darkest of fragrances, there's always a glimmer of light.

It's a worthy addition to any collection, and a reminder that Tom Ford is still one of the most exciting and innovative fragrance designers working today.

I tried this at the store on the card and was terribly turned off. I brought the sample home and just sprayed it now. The opening is definitely nice on the skin we will see how this dries down! Definitely a dark fragrance. I’m getting dark dark dark with a hidden subtle sweetness most likely that apricot note and a slight boozy woodiness. Seems very well blended unlike the original vintage tom fords but it has a dark booziness that has not been in his releases for a while. Not a plum japanois but I am getting a dark booziness that could be in the same category as it. I believe this is definitely one I will be picking up for the collection and besides ebene fume I haven’t really gotten any of these new releases. Spray on skin smells totally different on the card. If I didn’t bring this home and spray on skin I would have never liked the fragrance!

Tobacco Oud and Plum Japonais vibes with a touch of Ebene Fume...opens with a plastic note which is different but dries down to a skanky, boozy, sticky base. The rum gives the Tobacco Oud dirty vibe, the resins, woods, spices, with the touch of apricot are reminiscent of Plum Japonais and it has the coarse feeling from the ebony. It's weird bc it reminds me of aspects of those 3 scents but does stand on its own. Very TF. Worth trying...not as odd as one would expect from the top notes but still a challenging scent to pull off.
