11 yrs ago I found this funny: 'How many Microsoft designers does it take to change a lightbulb? None. They just define darkness as “industry standard”

But now I can't unsee this:
'How many huge companies does it take to fix the climate? None. They just define global warming as “industry standard”

@helenczerski Liverpool comedian had a song in the war which defined choice. All to Specification meaning the utility rules

@helenczerski

I don't want to be even more pessimistic, but if the lightbulb doesn't work and some powerfull ones in the room still want some light, they are likely to start a fire unless we prevent them.

@cyclotopie @helenczerski ty for this link. I looked for similar and did not find back when I read:

#TerminationShock by #NealStephenson

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Termin

"The book is set in a near-future when climate change has significantly altered human society and follows the attempts of a solar geoengineering scheme. The novel focuses on the geopolitical and social consequences of the rogue fix for climate change, themes common in the growing climate fiction genre."

My brother and his wife are economists and both quite progressive. I had them over for dinner the other night and my brother got so worked up about corporate culture that he blacked out from anger.

@MxVerda @helenczerski His soon-to-be former employer was taken to court by the Federal Government for _slavery_. :(

@helenczerski Big companies solve the climate crises by hiring more accountants (carbon offsets).

@helenczerski Makes me think of a calibration manual for the CO2 sensor i bought some years ago. It mentioned that automatic calibration required periodic exposure to "normal ambient level of 400ppm".

@helenczerski

It is amazing how people with no evidence continue to tell us stories about global warming.

It is astonishing how Florida is going to disappear due to global warming but martha's vineyard has no change in sea level.

What sort of arrogance does it take for people to think they control the world?

@helenczerski The term of art is 'shifting baselines'.

Brand new datacentres designed to run AI for a single MegaCorps. Powered by a direct connection to the Gas Grid, and their own gas powered generator.

Yes, Climate Heating. But look at all that shareholder value.

@helenczerski

And big corporations are steered by money nobles (or oligarchs, whatever you want to call them). They set the agenda of the corporations thanks to the money they invest into them by owning their shares or being directly invested.

Sadly nothing will change until the common people start to realize that you have to remove those oppressors, who not only steer corporations but also influence public opinion through media and agencies, change policies as they need by buying out politicians, etc.

Be it peacefully or violently.

Oh, and by the way, it's not just the climate that is affected by their quest of greed. Poverty, wars, low education, bad healthcare and so much more are also heavily influenced, if not entirely caused by them and their shenanigans.

@helenczerski
With incoming business friendly Trump administration would use sledgehammer to decimate the EPA as it did in his first term.This time 15 billionaires are in his cabinet or advisors like Musk and Ramaswamy
to protect the billionaire class and go after SS & Medicare to reduce $35 trillion deficit. Trump added $7.8 trillion deficit with huge tax cuts in 2017 to wealthy, corporate America and the Wall Street. It seems like middle classTrump voters don't care for their own well-being.

@helenczerski And alas, there are enough normal people who do just the same 🙈.

How many nihilistic neo-religious govt-dole-grifting fanatics (aka midwit academics) wrapped in the emperor's transparent clothes that they call The $cience<tm> does it take to push a narrative that humans understand and can "fix" a planet with unlimited taxation and tyranny? All of them.

@helenczerski I went to climate week in new York and was a bit surprised to find some big companies so seem to have got the message that you can't do business on a planet that doesn't support human life

Microsoft are probably the biggest buyers of carbon offsets and are taking it very seriously. Check out Katie sierks

First bit: How many programmers does it need to change a lightbulb? None, because that's a hardware problem.

Second bit: How many people does it need to fix the climate? None, because bright children will solve it.

Clearly, both are nonsense.
