This week, I started Monday morning knowing it was going to be a big week one way or another. 🤣 But I have ended the week immensely proud of the resilience, #cando attitude and delivery of the operational teams I get the pleasure to work with each day. The last call I did today ended by me being told by one of my colleagues, from a completely different area of VMO2, that the highlight of their week was working with the Mobile Care teams also due to the brilliant #cando atmosphere they witnessed from them. ❤️ The reason this week was a big one for the teams was that we launched a new quite complex process and a new skill that they don't usually handle, into all of the 3 partners I work with; at the same time as messaging million of customers inviting them to call these teams in case they needed any support for this process. At the same time we levelled up in our Retail support and delivered a new initiative in our Team South Africa's Retail Helpdesk to continue to transform and revolutionise the way our Retail team get support for our retail customers and also asked retail to call us about that new initiative and process. I mean doing both on the same day, in the same week at the same time. What could possibly go wrong?!?! 🤣🙈 It turns out; not a lot. The VMO2 programme managers and various different support teams, for the new process and skill, all jumped on our daily operational all hands calls with all partners to support us real time with any questions or challenges. The operational partner teams were amazing at getting all the last minute training and comms changes out from the daily all hands calls and the changing messages could be heard in the calls just hours later. At one point, we had over 160 different leaders from across the Mobile Care locations all on one call and the beauty of it was the way the more tenured and multiskilled leaders started pitching in with the support and everyone was just focused on helping each other to help and delight our customers. The retail team just embraced their new roles and activities and by the end of the week had been curious enough to start even educating us on the new system they had access to 🥰 and just handled it all like immense pros. We even managed to have a bit of a laugh along the way 😄 It's these sort of weeks that remind me why I love to do the job I do. #mobilecare #cando #teamwork #vmo2

Celebrating Success and Strengthening Connections In the hustle and bustle of achieving our goals, it’s easy to focus solely on tasks and deadlines. Last week we had our entire team manager level & up together for a 2-day in-person session.  I’m a firm believe of getting the team together at least once per quarter for a review of results, planning for next quarter, learning & socializing.   The costs of this are quite high: -About 40% of our entire company not doing “work” for 4 days (2 days of travel + 2-day retreat) -4 days of travel costs including flights, hotels, taxis & food -The cost of social activities   The benefits are: -A team that understands where we are going -Increased alignment amongst all the different stakeholders -Increased trust amongst the team -Increased productivity for the rest of the quarter -Overall, a better company culture   Yes, we spent a lot of money to put this together. However, I am confident the benefits over the quarter will far outweigh the costs

Practical Teamwork in Action: Overcoming Challenges in Service Delivery 💪🚙 In the world of public health, teamwork is not just about meetings and strategic plans—it’s about being there for one another when the unexpected happens. 🌟 Recently, after completing a mentorship visit to Nthalire Health Centre, located in a remote and mountainous area, we faced an unexpected challenge on our way back to our office at Chitipa Boma. The muddy terrain left our vehicle stuck, and for a moment, it seemed like our journey had come to a halt. 🌧️🚧 But this is where the spirit of teamwork came alive. 🙌 Each member of the team rose to the occasion. Some strategized and assessed the situation, while others grabbed tools and worked tirelessly to clear the mud and free the vehicle. Despite the tough conditions, we kept morale high with laughter and encouragement. 😄⚒️ In no time, our collective effort paid off, and we were back on the road. 🛤️✨ This experience reinforced an important lesson: teamwork is about adaptability, mutual support, and a shared commitment to achieving the goal—no matter the obstacles. 🌍🤝 Whether working in a boardroom or knee-deep in mud, collaboration is the key to progress. 🚀 To all public health professionals and others working in resource-limited or remote settings: let’s celebrate these small victories and the incredible teams that make them happen. Last week I was lucky enough to spend a day with a fab integrated health and social care team that was feeling as though it had lost its way a little. I facilitated a team development session for them centred primarily around reconnecting the team - we used the MBTI personality type indicator to underpin some of the work and enable some new team connections. We acknowledged how easy it had been to get caught up in individual tasks, day to day ‘firefighting’ and the pressure of responsibilities, however, this was no longer serving the team well as they had become disconnected and disengaged with each other. It was agreed that there was incredible value in coming together and pausing as a team. Here’s why we thought the team time together that day wasn’t just useful, but absolutely invaluable: Reconnecting the Team: Our session helped deepen the teams understanding and trust in each other. They recognised that the feeling of camaraderie had slipped by the wayside in the melee of delivering tasks. The session not only boosted morale but also created a bit of renewed Team Glue. Creating New Opportunities for Collaboration: Conversations in the session led to new connections being made and meetings being put in the diary to connect post-session. Participants realised there were opportunities to work together to reduce duplication and streamline work. They saw how team members could help each other out for the good of the service and its objectives. Perspective Sharing: Every team member brought some totally unique experiences and perspectives. It was a great reminder about the importance of diversity in a team and the value of looking at challenges from different perspectives. Reminder of the Mission: Time spent together helped everyone to realign themselves with the Team Purpose. It was a chance to reflect and make plans to ensure that everyone's work is aligned Our day together didn’t just support the team’s professional development and boost morale, it reconnected the group and reminded them of the unique power they have as a collective team rather than a group of individuals. (And a fortunate bi-product was that it was fun too! 😀 )
