Jon Stewart blames measles outbreak on 'science-denying affluent California liberals'

'They’re not rednecks. They’re not ignorant. They practice a mindful stupidity,' 'Daily Show' host says

Jon Stewart tackled America's ongoing vaccine debate on Tuesday, mocking both conservatives and liberals who deny science.

"There's no red America. There's no blue America. There's just a needlessly sick America," Stewart said on "The Daily Show" in a segment titled "Les Measlesrables."

Stewart skewered a pair of prominent Republicans and possible 2016 presidential candidates — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie — for fueling antivaccination activists, as well as “science-denying affluent California liberals.”

“They’re not rednecks. They’re not ignorant," the "Daily Show" host said. "They practice a mindful stupidity.”

The segment comes amid a measles outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people in the United States, with public health officials and the White House urging parents to vaccinate their children.

“You should get your kids vaccinated,” President Barack Obama told Savannah Guthrie during an interview broadcast on NBC’s “Today” show Monday. “It’s good for them.”

"Oh, no. You can't say that!" Stewart said. "You're Barack Obama! You can't tell people what to do. Now half the country just on principle has jumped in their cars and raced off looking for the Measles Depot!"

Stewart also mocked CNN's coverage of the outbreak, which included an “unnecessary hologram of measles floating through an airplane."

Late Tuesday, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, weighed in on the vaccine debate in an op-ed published on the cable network's website:

Over the last few hours, I have started, scratched out and even abandoned the writing of this op-ed. I couldn't do it. It wasn't there. Didn't feel it.

Something kept nagging at me, and it wasn't until this very moment that I finally figured out what.

It's the idea that this article would be labeled "opinion" or "editorial" in the first place. Sure, there are some topics that seem to lend themselves appropriately to opinion pages:

The President's new budget.

The death penalty.

Is Tom Brady the greatest quarterback ever?

Vaccines, however, which have prevented 6 million deaths every year worldwide and have fundamentally changed modern medicine, should not be on that list.

The benefit of vaccines is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of fact.

NBC medical correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman, who was suspended last fall for breaking a quarantine after a member of her crew contracted Ebola, tweeted that members of the public have a "responsibility" to get their children vaccinated.

Elizabeth Jean Hackman, the middle child of the late Gene Hackman and his ex-wife Faye Maltese, has broken the family's silence on the untimely death of their dad and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

While an investigation is underway to determine the couple's cause of death, the 62-year-old told TMZ that the family has suspicions about what led up to the discovery of the Superman star, 95, Arakawa, and one of their three dogs dead in their Santa Fe, N.M., home on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

They can't know for sure, but Elizabeth and her siblings suspect that carbon monoxide is the reason for their deaths. Police responded to a welfare check called in by the couple's neighbors, only to find that they'd been dead for at least a day—though it's not known what caused enough concern for them to make the call.

She also confirmed that law enforcement found no evidence suggesting foul play so far. However, Sheriff Adan Mendoza has not officially ruled anything out at this point in the investigation.

Elizabeth didn't offer any insight into her dad's health at the time of his death, though in his final public sighting almost a year ago, he was spotted using a cane as a mobility aid.

In addition to Elizabeth, Gene is survived by his eldest child, son Christopher, and a younger daughter, Leslie. He and Arakawa did not share any kids. As the family is actively getting their affairs in order, details for a memorial service have not been finalized yet.

Elizabeth and Leslie, along with granddaughter Annie, issued a statement to Parade, writing, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy. He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss."

Zelenskyy breaks silence on social media after fiery Oval Office exchange with Trump: 'Thank you America'

Andrew Miller
3 min read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted publicly for the first time since his Oval Office blowup with President Donald Trump on Friday with a social media post thanking the United States.

"Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit," Zelenskyy posted on X. "Thank you @POTUS. Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that."

The post was Zelenskyy's first comment since a meeting with Trump and Vice President JD Vance turned into a shouting match at the White House with the three leaders arguing over what "cards" Ukraine holds and whether Zelenskyy has shown enough gratitude to the United States.

A scheduled press conference on Friday was canceled after the heated exchange and Zelenskyy was seen briskly exiting the White House into an awaiting car and driving away.

Trump, Vance And Zelenskyy Spar Over Russian War In Tense Exchange: 'Very Disrespectful'

A scheduled press conference on Friday was canceled after the heated exchange and Zelenskyy was seen briskly exiting the White House into an awaiting car and driving away.

"Mr. President, with respect, I think it's disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media," Vance told Zelenskyy. "Right now, you guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines, because you have manpower problems. You should be thanking the president for bringing it, to bring it into this country."

Zelenskyy later said that under war, "everybody has problems, even you" and that the U.S. would feel the war "in the future."

Trump Says Zelenskyy Can 'Come Back When He Is Ready For Peace' After Fiery White House Exchange

"You don't know that," Trump responded as Zelenskyy said "God bless you" to Trump.

"Don't tell us what we're going to feel. We're trying to solve a problem. Don't tell us what we're going to feel," Trump continued.

At one point, Trump pointed at Zelenskyy and told him that what he's doing is "very disrespectful" to the United States.

After the exchange, it was announced that a scheduled press conference had been canceled, and Zelenskyy was seen briskly leaving the White House with no word on the mineral rights deal that had been expected to be signed on Friday.

"We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today," Trump posted on Truth Social after the meeting.

"Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace."

Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa’s harrowing 911 call revealed: Caller tears up begging for help

The emotional 911 call made by a maintenance worker after discovering the bodies of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, has been released.

Hours after news broke of their tragic deaths, TMZ obtained audio of an employee frantically pleading for the dispatcher to send first responders to the New Mexico home.

The man, whose name was redacted, told the operator that he “found two or one deceased person[s] inside a house.”

“Please send somebody really quick,” he begged.

As the dispatcher paused to call for the paramedics, the caller began crying while repeatedly saying, “Damn.”

However, the man didn’t seem to have a personal connection to Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 64, as he could not tell the dispatcher any personal details about them.

“[It’s] a female and a male probably. I don’t know, sir. Just send somebody up here really quick,” he said.

The caller said he had “no idea” if the two were “awake” or “breathing” because he “was not inside the house” with them.

“[The house] is closed. It’s locked. I can’t go in,” he said. “But I see that she is lying down on the floor from the window.”

He insisted they were not “awake” or “alert” and saw no signs of movement.

“No, dude, they’re not moving!” he said while growing increasingly concerned. “Just send somebody out here really quick!”

The man suggested he worked for the gated community where the couple lived and instructed the officers to meet him at the front entrance.

Once police entered the home, they found Arakawa lying on her right side in the bathroom. The Santa Fe detective who examined the scene said there was “bloating in her face and mummification in her hands and feet.”

There were pills strewn atop the bathroom countertop and evidence that she may have fallen suddenly.

Given the state of her body, authorities believe she was dead for some time.

Meanwhile, her husband was found in a separate room off the kitchen. Police believe he, too, may have fallen as his glasses were located next to his body.

While two of the couple’s dogs were found alive and healthy, the third was discovered dead “10-15 feet” away from Arakawa.

The workers who found Hackman and the classical pianist told police they hadn’t seen them in about two weeks.

A search warrant was issued for the home as authorities believe their deaths are “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.”

Although it was originally assumed the two died from carbon monoxide poisoning, there were “no obvious signs of a gas leak” following an inspection by the fire department and the New Mexico gas company.
