Assassin’s Creed Shadows Faces Action from Japanese Officials For Shrine Destruction

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will face “appropriate action” from Japanese officials due to recent shrine destruction gameplay footage.

An Assassin’s Creed Shadows player was recently seen destroying Itate Hyozu Shrine in the game. In the footage, Yasuke uses his sword to destroy all the different assets in the temple, including the shrine altar, which led to a significant uproar in the community. Now, a report from the Japanese publication Sankai News (via Automaton) reveals that representatives from the shrine will take “appropriate action” against the game.

EDITOR’S NOTE: It’s come to our attention that the original publication is an outlet known for producing false and hyperbolic stories. While this story will remain up for transparency purposes, we acknowledge this issue and promise no further coverage of stories reported by the original outlet will be covered at Insider Gaming.

Moreover, the shrine representative was also asked if Ubisoft had contacted them prior to using the location in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The representative replied, “No. If there had been, we would have refused.” The representative also did not reveal what “appropriate action” they would take against the game.

Furthermore, the community has mixed reactions against the shrines being destroyed in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Many players stated that this action is disrespectful to Japanese culture and that the player should not be allowed to destroy sacred objects in the game. Others have argued that the decision to destroy the shrine lies with the player, as they are the ones in control. Some have also pointed out that players fistfight the pope in AC 2, and the series has featured several religious sites over the years.

Insider Gaming has reached out to Ubisoft for direct comment on these claims. But, so far, there has been no response.

In other news, Ubisoft is confident that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will stick to its March 20 release date. Also, the game’s pre-orders are in line with AC Odyssey. • Huge nothing burger, its a fictional representation, they’re mad because the game has a reactive environment.

    Their shrines aren’t getting touched.

  • Why no mention to the fact you couldn’t destroy the mosques in earlier ac games?

Yeah, people might say technology etc. but we all know that if they made another one right now, they would not allow you to damage or defile a mosque in any way whatsoever.

  • I like how people are completely disregarding the fact that The actual culprit is the person playing the game and going out of their way to desecrate the shrine 💀

  • It’s a game people! It’s entirely fictional. Where was the backlash when Ghost of Tsushima was destroying parts of Japan. And in that fact, what about the Apple of Eden, the Assassin/Pirate Edward Kenway, the British Assassins siblings, etc. You can all make an argument they didn’t exist. Yet we played the games anyway. The Church has been used as a way to tell the story of the Assassin/Templar War but one shrine gets destroyed, people start freaking out. Calm the f down.
