Stair daily times staff writer sufism is an important part of Rebecca Tighe a spiritual life. She and her daughter Bevin who is a Sophomore at Fike High school travel from their Home in Wilson to the Triangle area to share in the dance with others As often As they can. Dance is the main technique that sufi use a to create a sacred space for people to have a spiritual experience a said is. Tighe. A a it a a mystical experience that defies rational understanding. We make a spiritual connection that a beyond the sufi experience May be exotic but it is not unheard of. Joe Jones associate professor of religion and philosophy at Barton College is familiar with both the sufi movement and the relationship to god sought by those in it. A they the sufi Are mystics who have an intense desire to be Back in Union with god a Jones said this week in response to an inquiry. A they Are ecstatic. A ecstasy is Means to stand away from yourself and get a gods Eye sufi also meet together in something they Cau Zihar in which they chant play simple instruments and move rhythmically As an Aid to prayer and meditation. The word Zihar also spelled Dikr Means remembrance. A sufism is a path for a Mystic that does not separate you from the rest of the world a said is. Tighe. A you have a Job and family and stir live in the divine because sufi sought Protection from Mohammed around the time of the founding of islam in the 7th Century sufism has come to be associated with islam. Many sufi Are muslims but it is not necessary to be a Muslim to be a sufi. In the United states the popular image of islam is that it is a rigid fundamentalist religion. In the Middle East where islam is the predominant religion sufism offers muslims a path that focuses More on the mystical or spiritual Side of religion and less on doctrine. Jones the Barton professor notes the difference. A sufism is a Reform movement in islam that has been around a Long Long time a he says. A a it a More of a technique or Way like zen buddhism than it is identified with a set people also come to sufism from hinduism which is the predominant religion in India As Well As Judaism and christianity. Hazrat Inayat Khan who introduced sufism in the United states in 1910, came from India. Obedience to a moral code is the first step on the sufi path to Union with god but it does not have to be the islamic moral code. Furthermore because sufism stresses Lov Rebecca Tighe loses herself in dance. Photo by Grant Roberson my others sufi must tolerate other religions and Are free to find the truth in any of them. A looking for those jewels the connection is part of everybody a religious life a said is. Tighe. A sufism is not a separate religion a she said. A if the major world religions were Rivers sufism would be where they Cross each other their Points of she compares the different religions of the world to a bouquet of Flowers. Having several varieties of Flowers adds to the Beauty of the whole bouquet. Is. Tighe was born in Wilson in 1954 and grew up As a presbyterian. A it was never quite a match a she said. A i had mystical experiences that did not fit with the outer form of my birth she remembers the Church organist explaining the symbolism in the stained Glass windows to her sunday school class when she was a child. It really opened her eyes to the mystical Side of religion. A it was like somebody spoke a language that you spoke a she said. A i Felt but she Felt that there were not enough mystical experiences in presbyterianism to satisfy her desire to make that connection with god. A was a Young person i made those connections in nature a she said. A fall my life was sort of a quest. I always Felt so much More ecstatic loved connected in those she discovered sufism through Reading the poetry of me Levi Jalaluddin Rumi a 13th Century turkish sufi teacher. A sufism is not a separate religion. If the major world religions were Rivers sufism would be where they Cross each other other their Points of convergence. A Rebecca Tighe she made her first connection with other sufi practitioners in Asheville about six years ago. A i finally heard that someone else had had the same experiences that i had a she said. Connections Between people happen during the sufi dance and the Zihar. A mystical Union with god is the ultimate destination of the sufi path. Because of the need to connect with others sufi need to express their spirituality together. The dance unites them in their Effort to connect with god. A you never want to Stop this connection a she said. A that is your recreation. That is your before she started working As a children a librarian assistant at the Wilson county Library is. Tighe worked in several retail bookstores for 12 years. Her bachelors degree in Fine arts from Stephens College in Columbia mo., has helped prepare her for her current Job. A a there a been a fantastic Renaissance of the illustrated Book for children a she said. She uses what she Learned about movement in her dance minor to enliven her storytelling. A my grandmother worked with children All of her life and thought that i would be Good at it too a she said. A i see a Way to do that and not be in the Public schools. At the Library i can do it my Way and be creative and turn children on to poetry and she believes she Learned values and attitudes through her connection with her grandmother that help her work effectively with children. Sufism encourages people to draw on such roots and traditions from their own lives to understand themselves better. Sufi see this As necessary in order to draw closer to god. Is. Tighe a path has allowed her to spend most of her life in Wilson while fulfilling her need for a spiritual journey that brings her closer to god. A i finally bloomed where i was planted a she said. A it took a lot of looking around and finding a Niche for Kenly quietly loses its office of magistrate by Connie Rhein daily times staff writer Kenly a this town is without a magistrate. Town manager de Temple said wednesday the town received no official notification about the closing of the office from Johnston county chief District court judge William Christian. The chief District court judge is responsible for overseeing magistrates. A part time magistrate has manned an office in Kenly for 21 years Temple said. The Post was held by Joyce Overman. A i walked by her office and she was Clearing out her desk a Temple said about How he Learned of the closing. This Means the towns police Force will have to take people who 6 months same As Cash have been arrested to Smithfield 12 Miles away. That will cause a hardship for the police and town merchants Temple said. Merchants will not be Able to seek warrants for bad checks locally. They too will have to make the trip to Smithfield. A i think ifs terrible a Temple said. He said Council May formally oppose the closing at the next meeting March 8. For now mayor Scott Turik will write a letter to the court Temple said. Temple said is. Overman wanted to be a full time magistrate and was moved to Smithfield. The judge said there was not enough work in Kenly to warrant a full time magistrate. A a that a what they were saying a Temple said. A they did no to have enough business Here for a full time magistrate. My Contention is that a a in fact within the last two years town Council has formally requested a full time magistrate. At the time Council members wanted a full time magistrate to help officers handle the towns crime problem which is primarily drug related. But the request was denied citing Lack of need. Taking a person under arrest to Smithfield takes one of the two officers on duty in Kenly out of town for about two hours. A the just has to get in line once he gets there a Temple said of the officers. Pinetops still has its Magis trate Steve Burrus who runs a town hardware store. Burrus is a kind of a on Calls magistrate. Since he lives and works in Pinetops he can be reached most any time said town administrator Brenda Harrell.
