Himalayan Distillery (HDL), a prominent player in Nepal's alcoholic beverage industry, is making big gains even in a sluggish economy. As of the second quarter of FY 2081/82, the company posted a massive 83.13% year-on-year jump in gross profit.

Golden Oak, HDL’s flagship in the 40 under-proof (U.P.) whisky segment, remains the undisputed leader— a longstanding favorite among the working and middle classes. However, its revenue fluctuates in sync with Golden Oak’s sales, reflecting the company’s heavy dependence on the brand. The company’s attempt to diversify with Black Oak has delivered only a modest bump in sales and distribution.

But stirring things up in the vodka game is Silver Oak, the latest addition to HDL’s lineup. HDL introduced this 40 U.P. vodka in December 2023 and is gaining consumers’ trust. But challenges like changing consumer tastes and intense competition from lower-priced alcohols still remain.
