2009: MERKEL AND OBAMA FRIENDSHIP
Despite differences on how to tackle climate change and the economic crisis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Barack Obama quickly forged a close relationship that put Germany at the centre of U.S. foreign policy.
The friendship was tested, however, in the years to come. In 2011, Obama pushed Europe and Germany to spend more to tackle the euro zone crisis.
In 2013, reports alleged the U.S. spied on Merkel.
