Super Mario Star Road - Updated Trailer (Download)

Trailer

Super Mario Star Road is a ROM hack made by Skelux. It was released around Christmas 2011 and contains 130 Stars. It promises itself to be the direct "sequel" to the original Super Mario 64, with a slight increase in difficulty. It is considered to be one of the most famous SM64 ROM hacks, and has amassed widespread popularity among the SM64 ROM hacking community.

Amongst other changes, a variety of music has been replaced or redone, with many new tracks being sourced from other games. New textures have been added and others replaced which, like the music, are largely sourced from other games the same era as Super Mario 64. The course entrances range from simple warp pipes or paintings to more unconventional entrances, such as a vase or a painting easel.

Furthermore, all but one of the bosses have been replaced; instead of fighting Bowser at the end of every Bowser Level (excluding the final Bowser Level, in which Mario does fight Bowser), he must fight what are referred to as the Pernicious Piranha Plants in Bowser's Slippery Swamp, and the Blueberry Bully in Retro Remix Castle.

Plot[]

The plot of the game is told by Yoshi, who informs Mario that Bowser has found the secret to get to the Star Road, the kingdom of the Star Spirits. Using the power of the Power Stars, he is able to transport his troops all over the Mushroom Kingdom to wreak havoc. In order to reach the Star Road, Mario must collect enough Power Stars to break the seal. Once Mario reaches the Star Road, he finds Bowser in his sky base. Mario then defeats Bowser, and is transported to the first overworld, where he is rewarded with another Star and a thank you from Princess Peach.

Upon collecting 121 Stars (including the one available after beating Bowser, and the one at the peak of Hidden Palace Finale), one Star Replica will appear in each of the secret courses in the game, making a total of 130 obtainable Stars.

Hidden as a sub-area under the Metal Cap course's area ID is the 0 Life Area. When Mario loses all of his lives, he is sent here instead of being greeted a game over screen. At the end of the road is a large hole, if Mario jumps down into it, it'll take him straight back to the file menu screen.

Easter Eggs[]

Super Mario Star Road contains many Easter eggs, secrets, and references to other games. You can read more about them on the dedicated page for them, Super Mario Star Road/Easter Eggs and References.

Trivia[]

  • The standard Game Over screen has been replaced with a playable level (called 0 Life Area), which is under the Creepy Cap Cave stage.
  • In some of the later versions of Star Road, if the player holds the L button when selecting a file, they will toggle "Hard Mode". In this mode, Mario will die in one hit from anything. Swimming underwater isn't affected by this.
  • In Bob-omb Battle Factory, there is a locked door with a sign next to it that tells the player that the door it leads to is found in Gloomy Garden. This is intended to help the player find the pipe leading to the Vanish Cap stage, which is in Gloomy Garden. However, there is no door to be found either in Gloomy Garden or in Puzzle of the Vanish Cap.
  • There is a DS remake currently being developed, Super Mario Star World. Its release date is still unknown, but it will include large amounts of new content on top of the original Star Road such as a second story arc, new levels and missions, refined controls, and a new character.
  • This ROM hack is fully supported on sm64ex-coop.
  • There is a DLC that adds an extra 20 green Power Stars to collect.
  • A console-compatible version of Super Mario Star Road has been released, allowing it to be played on the original Nintendo 64 hardware.
  • In the October 2011 beta version of this hack, Large Leaf Forest was instead named Tall Trunk Forest. It is the only main course whose name differs between the beta and the final release.
  • Mushroom Mountain Town, Piranha Plant Pond, Koopa Canyon, and Hidden Palace Finale all had their music updated between the October 2011 beta and the final release.
