The final Eva Briggs Abstract Art Competition reception was held Jan. 31 at the Community Performance & Art Center in Green Valley, and held at least one surprise. It was a packed house enjoying the work from Santa Rita Art League members that will be on display through February at CPAC’s Harry and Ann Paxton Gallery. Anne Dravigny, who got the first Briggs competition off the ground more than 20 years ago, made a surprise appearance, joining Bonnie Nelson and Hugh Beykirch — the two artists who’ve entered every Briggs competition. Dravigny is also a founding member of the “Abstract Briggade,” a group within the SRAL that promotes abstract work. The Eva Briggs Abstract Art Competition was funded by a 20-year bequest from Eva Briggs, and this was the final competition. In its place, an anonymous donor has funded 10 years of abstract competition, the first held in January. It is called the Ellen Sussman-Eva Briggs Memorial Abstract Art Competition.
