Quick reminder that Immigrants Are Good, Actually.
By pretty much every metric.

Call out the xenophobic bullshit.

And them being "illegal" or "undocumented" is a (intentional) failure of the system exploiting their labour, not theirs.

I've got a pet peeve on this.
Apologies in advance.
By simple self selection, sometimes brutal, the people who migrate are generally more motivated, adventurous, open minded, risk embracing, and curious than those who don't.
No migrant I ever met would choose "illegal" status to "legal" if given half a chance.
None are "coming to take your job", their presence is a net job creator, if anything.
The "wage depression" they are blamed for, is really bosses abusing their legal vulnerability.

The American liberals used to reply with boilerplate "This nation was built by immigrants", "we are a melting pot", they quoted the frigging poem on the Statue of Liberty, ffs.

The Overton window has shifted right so much that even that perfunctory acknowledgment of history, diversity, richness, is gone.

It's not worth keeping it at all, even if it already was barely a token.
The ground has been ceded to border paranoia, dehumanisation and xenophobia.

It's disgusting.

Most western nations run on the toil of immigrants.

They do the essential jobs no one else will.
They pick the fruit, clean the toilets, care for the elderly, take the trash.
They do it because they're trying to build themselves a place in a new country. They often feel they must prove their worth. They know they're entitled to 0.

And they're the punching bag for the inequality of the distribution of wealth.
It's not the rich hoarding, it's the overworked migrant always fearing deportation.

The climate crisis will make more immigrants and refugees. We either change our attitudes to the people who choose to or need to move, or we face more violent, more cruel border policies.

And I promise you, you can never be sure which side of the fence you'll end up on.
It's on your best interest that everyone is treated with humanity and dignity.

Borders themselves are a terrible idea and we'd be better off without them but that's a separate rant.

Kind of.
I'll do that one some other time.

@pezmico

Really? (my son hates when I say that but I’m not being disrespectful)

I must be running with different circles because I’ve not experienced that attitude anywhere.

@pezmico

Another angle supporting this:

Higher social class predicts increased unethical behavior
Seven studies using experimental and naturalistic methods reveal that upper-class individuals behave more unethically than lower-class individuals.
Mediator and moderator data demonstrated that upper-class individuals’ unethical tendencies are accounted for, in part, by their more favorable attitudes toward greed.
