Bisexuality is an often misunderstood identity, and many times there is a stigma associated with identifying as Bisexual. Estimates show that over 50% of those in the LGBTQIA+ community identify as Bisexual.

Key Terms Related to Bisexuality

Bisexuality: The famous Bi Activist Robyn Ochs defines it this way

“I call myself bisexual because I acknowledge that I have in myself the potential to be attracted — romantically and/or sexually — to people of more than one gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.”

Bisexuality sometimes is used as an umbrella term that includes other non-monosexual identities such as pansexuality, fluid, or queer.

Biphobia: The Human Rights Campaign defines it as:

“Biphobia is prejudice, fear or hatred directed toward bisexual people”

Biphobia can be internal or external.

Bi-Erasure: GLAAD defines it as:

“A pervasive problem in which the existence or legitimacy of bisexuality (either in general or in regard to an individual) is…

Toni Tails, I’ve heard that many times too. It seems society thinks that everything should fall into a binary rather than a spectrum.

We need to talk about this more — especially with the Baby Boomer generation. It’s so bad! Thank you for your dedication to this community. It helps me learn about what other individuals are going through and to have more empathy and make fewer assumptions.
