Russian soldiers have been compensating for a shortage of military vehicles by using donkeys on the front lines in Ukraine.

“The fighters were given a donkey to transport the ammunition to the front. But what did you expect? Cars are in short supply these days!” Kirill Fedorov, a pro-war Russian blogger, wrote.

The donkeys are being provided directly to troops by the Russian defence ministry, according to an unnamed soldier on Telegram.

Viktor Sobolev, a retired general who is now a member of the Russian parliament’s defence committee, defended the use of the animals as a necessity. Russia is estimated to have lost about 20,000 pieces of military equipment since the start of its all-out invasion of Ukraine almost three years ago.
