How to Make Potato Mochi

February 1, 2022

After playing Pokémon Legends: Arceus this weekend I really wanted to make potato mochi as a tasty snack. These are super easy to make and are so chewy, sweet, salty, and delicious! I show a few ways to prepare the potato mochi so you can either try them all or pick your favorite.

You will need:

  • A heat-safe bowl

  • Plastic wrap

  • A large mixing bowl

  • A knife

  • A cutting board

  • A deep skillet

  • A rubber spatula or spoon

Ingredients:

Potato Mochi:

300g Potato (about 2 cups)

4 Tbs Potato Starch

Salt (to taste)

Neutral Oil for frying

4 Tbs Milk (alternative milks work too)

Sauce:

3 Tbs Sugar

3 Tbs Soy Sauce

1 1/2 Tbs Mirin

1 1/2 Tbs Sake

Optional:

Cheese of your choice for filling

Nori Sheets

Shredded Nori

Method:

1. Peel and cut the potato, season with salt, and put in the heat-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave until the potato is soft, about 4 minutes.

2. Add the cooked potato to a mixing bowl and mash until there are no lumps. Add in the potato starch and mix again.

3. Add in the milk a few tablespoons at a time until a workable dough forms. Knead until smooth.

4. Cut into 6 pieces and form into patties. Add the cheese or fillings into the middle and decorate with toppings of your choice, or keep them plain.

5. Add oil to the skillet and set to med-low heat. Fry the mochis until browned on both sides. Set mochis aside and wipe out the excess oil.

6. Mix together the sauce ingredients and add to the skillet. Place the mochis into the sauce and cook, flipping occasionally, until the sauce is thick and sticky.

7. Plate and finish by coating the potato mochi with the sauce.

8. Enjoy!
