Because the avg person has virtually 0 understanding of how the economy works. It may sound elitist, but it's the cold hard truth. The avg person thinks greed drives inflation & market prices are arbitrary numbers capitalists made up. It's not economists who should self-reflect.

Singapore's economic success is, more than anything, the product of Georgism. The public capture of land rent, coupled with limited government (usually around 15%-20% of GDP), mean they don't have to tax productive activities much. Free markets do the rest.
