internet was either dialup or just stupidly expensive until the mid-late 00s.
it was basically just a continuation of the 90s except 3D graphics was doubling in quality every year.
Lan parties were still a thing.
Pirated media/games was shared around constantly on burnt DVDs.

I miss it. It was a good time.

Local multiplayer meant a lot back then. Sitting shoulder to shoulder with someone during a co-op campaign, or even better, during a 1v1 where you're literally going to beat the shit out of each other if you lose.

PC gaming was amazing because you couldn't be a technologically illiterate faggot if you wanted to game before 2009.

PSN was still free so you could legit just buy the game and connect to online multiplayer for free. Xbox was king of the console wars due to Halo and COD. Nothing better than chilling with the boys until 1am, then we all went home and hopped in an Xbox party until 3am. Some nights as recent as 2011 we'd have Netflix watch parties where they'd show your avatar in a movie theater.

Depended a lot on what console (or PC) you had, but what was generally and universally the case was:
>more polygons
>you actually got the full game when you bought it
>online gaming for the consoles was still very much in its infancy, drastically improved through games like Halo and CoD
>Handhelds were relevant and significantly separate from consoles/PC
>Nintendo produced more than just Mario-Zelda-Pokemon games
>remakes weren't as common
>if you wanted more out of a game, you actually had to get gud or use cheat codes/debug menus

before online multiplayer became the norm, very fun. games concentrated more on the single player experience and less on soulless online grinding for e-bucks and skins. Only a few games got the multiplayer aspect right. Not like current games where even single player games require a connection.

There was an unfortunate push for 3D polygon 'advanced' graphics. The gameplay/story/etc. usually was last on the list of important features. They also seemed obsessed that there should never be any 2D sidescrolling, so it was just high graphic vomit that is dated way worse than even early NES games.

N64 had a few great games, but was largely shit and the rest wasn't much better other than a few hidden gems.
Got pulled into playing some Halo years later by someone saying it was the greatest game ever. It was okay. The controls were rubish and any computer first person shooter was far better as was old shit like goldeneye.

Enjoyed CS and CS:S. CS:GO was an abomination unto the lord and that was when i stopped playing videogames. Might try CS2 someday hoping it is better.
>>
>>930753807 #
as an old source engine nerd cs:go is pure cancer.

stick with CS:S
>>
>>930754058 #
I ran CS 1. and early CS:S servers. never popular, but it was fun to tinker around and play at LAN parties.
Played sparing CS:S up to a few years ago, but the servers just slowly dropped off to unplayability. Been a few years, so maybe it made a resurgence?
>>
Well, the first three HALO games, COD4:MW, and COD World at War, were all released in the 2000 -2009 time period, as were L4D 1 and 2. If you're in to FPS's, it was the fucking Golden Years. Linkin Park was in their glory years, so you had good music to listen to, too. The Lord of the Rings movies were out there, as well as the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy and the first X-men movies.

Short version, the 2K's were fucking awesome.

Worse than it was in the 80s and 90s. 2000s gaming was utter trash. It's getting a lot better again with the return of indies and big players that hire designers/devs who know what they're doing.

Maybe it was due to my young age and ignorance of game development, but I remember feeling like games were much more mysterious and expansive than they really were. I remember reading through discussion threads on random forums about people discovering secrets in games, discussing theories about how to find more secrets, or over-analysing tiny details they found in games.

I think data-mining has kinda killed that these days. Everything is debunked immediately and thoroughly documented online. There's definitely value to that, but I have always felt like something was lost along the way.
>>
it was fun
even small studios released some gems and a lot of developers were always trying new stuff
companies like blizzard were making actual good games like starcraft
UT-UT2k3-4k were all super fun and had so many mods you could change the games into some crazy bullshit
morrowind and other crazy rpgs were coming out and were incredibly text heavy but that made them incredibly immersive due to immense characterization and world building
>>
>>930755399 #
I played so much war craft 3, command and conquer, and the generation of games that followed N64. Playstation and Xbox release some pretty fun titles. The era was legit if you were into the types of games - why did it suck to you?

Exactly my thoughts. I remember feeling that there was such a rapid and creative development in the video game world that I could not wait to see where it would go. Then it kind of just got stuck on loop midway through the 00's and we're still rehashing the same old ideas from that time. Same with film. Something back then went terribly wrong in the world, causing everyone to stop taking risks. And no it wasn't the fucking towers.

Feels like it had to have started when game publishers realized how much money the could squeeze out of players the more popular online connectivity and purchases got. They start pressing studios to churn out games faster because; "we will just patch it later".
Publishers really start gobble the shareholder cocks, gets scared to be to inventive and wants to play it safe.
Thank fuck there are smaller studios and indie studios around to take some risks and moving shot forward by testing out fun ideas. Just imagine the even more homogenous sludge gaming would be if someone didn't test the waters.
>>
>>930747395 (OP) #
The best really. Not being nostalgic, triple A actually put out complete games that weren't afraid to take risks. You had a variety of stuff, the vintage prices weren't inflated out the ass, and legacy hardware wasn't so shitty to use because the current tech still let you do it reliably. None of that faggot ass micro transaction shit either. Graphics are better, but games are broken and really gay now. You have to go indie.

first of all, the 360 didn't come out until 2005. OG xbox was fucking garbage with an oversized controller, only thing it was good for was hacking it to turn it into a media box, every game on it was shit, and PS 2 was far superior.

Simply put: I was a terrible student and did NOT want to be in the military, something I made sure both my parents and eventual recruiter knew (parents made me sign up for the DEP in the summer before 12th Grade anyway, even though I dropped out of AFJROTC in the 10th Grade). I never wanted to be in to begin with, and that's all my parents cared about: having me in there. Not doing Color Guard, no Drill Team, no volunteer work, just make sure I wore the uniform every Wednesday like the others and tell everyone (their friends, coworkers, and other family members) that they have a son who's in the AFJROTC, and eventually Air Force itself (from which I was kicked out during Basic Training).

As you'd imagine, all of my other grades were absolute trash, too. But, they didn't care; as long as I'm in the AFJROTC and will graduate on-time, even if that meant summer school two summers in a row AND some BS "class" which just gave me credits at the end.

Dude in the year 2000 you would steal porn mags. Ravage your dick to your sisters Victoria secret mags. Stare at the wiggly lines on the scrambled pay channels that had porn, and if you just messed with the wire just right you saw it for a few seconds on and off.

Which console from the 2000s would have been owned by a kid who hated Nintendo, hated Pokémon, hated the Gamecube (and hated the Wii too), hated the Game Boy Advance, hated Pokémon, and had the most anti-Nintendo console of all?

for me, I dont remember my life revolving around gaming like it is now. It was much more casual. I remember my room mate would just be like "hey man, wanna get some kills in?" then we would take turns playing call of duty 2 or 3 multiplayer. good times.

sega was actively antagonizing the nintendo fanbase in the 90s but there was a general attitude of "nintendo is for babies" from both sony and xbox fanboys.
you would have been an annoying squeaker in socom lobbies on the sony side or in halo lobbies on the xbox side.

The FPS lobbies were a lot smaller & you got to know players by their gamer tag. At least here in Australia. I was on COD Modern Warfare 24/7 maxing on free-for-all & they were great days. Smoking & chugging on soft drinks during 10 hour marathons was a blast. There was plenty of trash talk but it was more of the "fuck off" variety and nothing too toxic.

I owned a gamecube, actually it is still somewhere but the last time I used it was when I was living with my gf together. She liked to play Super Mario Sunshine, its a lot of fun. Sometimes we played Mario Kart angainst each other. She was the best gf I ever had, food and movies in bed. Get high, play video games. Save money, go to parties. Today I'm dead broke, drink almost every second night, no social skills, woman don't talk to me anymore, my dream job turned out to be a dead end. I'm still a gamer dude.

I felt this too as a kid. Like as a kid when I played the game, if there was a mountain in the background of a stage of a 3D sidescroller, I'd wonder to myself what's on that mountain, what's on the other side of the mountain. I really felt the world of the games. But as I aged at some point I started to just see the game mechanics, the systems, and that mountain in the background was just a sprite slapped on the screen that didn't mean anything.

Even if its up to 1.6.
I heard the problem is that steam wants to connect you to skill related matches instead of servers, so you get sent to random fuckland instead of hanging out with your favorite server

My childhood was genuinely awful, and the only thing I miss is vidya nostalgia, but I can realistically do most of it now as a happy NEET because none of these games stopped existing. The only things I no longer have access to are pre-SBMM/EOMM multiplayer games such as Halo and Battlefield.

Many servers have bots if you connect, you can play with them. Usually on good days, at least 4 "real" players connect on these servers. But I had sessions I'd find an office game, and we played at least 3 maps with full teams. So yes, there is a number of active players.
>>
>>930796552 #

I'd say be 13 again. I would do a few things differently in high school, taken different classes and done a different after-school club. I would focus on getting a job earlier, drive earlier, and gone about college completely differently. I would have taken up dogecoin when it was cheap and cashed out after it hit it's peak. I'd be pretty much set for life and everything would be on easy mode. I'd also get in on some vidya that I know is good but I can't get in this late on.

Bro, your problem is that you're used to 254.002 servers online and 568.253 players currently in game. It never was like this before, but the people in game are bored, you know. My friends on steam who play Counter Strike 2, play two maps, then switch to another game and then go back to Counter Strike 2 - every day.

No one has patience to wait for a server to fill. Back in my time when gamer gate happend, playing with team and do scouting for good players to make a match was necessary. It took the whole day until we could finally play our game.
>>
>>930747395 (OP) #
Fun, most good games usually had a unique artstyle, not like today where you can hardly differentiate between trailers.
The Gamez were simpler, on the one hand the stories weren't that good, but atleast you weren't being preached too. JRPGs actually tried to have good combat systems and characters since they couldn't rely on big titty waifus to move titles yet.
>>
It was cool.

If we use the COD:BO to date the picture to 2010 that was still at the time when LCD TV's were pricey and people were still holding onto their CRTs. Bought my first flat screen in 2012/2013 and was still like $600 for a 42" Vizio. Wish I still had the 29" CRT i threw out when I got the Vizio.

Wild thing is now that CRT screen in the pic is worth more than a 55" LCD in 2025.

Never played too much of the first one, but Prototype 2 was one of my favourite vidya. Having a green island that was mostly zombie free save a few here and there, a yellow island that was mid way through collapsing where zombie hordes would attack safe zones out of nowhere and a red island that was full on post-apocalypse was so fucking rad. Made it feel like 3 different games in 1. I spent so many hours posing as a Blacklight soldier on the yellow and red islands rolling around with a squad of fellow Blacklights tearing up zombies. If you dig Prototype you should give Resident Evil: Raccoon City a try. A lot of the "official" reviewers didn't like it because it was too different from the rest of the series, but being able to play as a squadron of S.T.A.R.'s made it my personal favourite entry in the series.

>Well, back in my day, when we were hungry, me and the boys would grab our spears and bows and arrows and hunt for meat. Usually we would trap small game such as rabbits and rodents and birds and fish, or a pig if we were lucky. If we were really lucky, we would encounter huge beasts such as mammoths and bison, and it took the whole team to bring one down with the risk of getting seriously hurt. But it was enough to feed a family for a few months. And when we wanted to cook something, we had to rub two sticks together to start the fire.
