Why are British place names so hard to pronounce? HERE’S WHY: Britain is made up a ton of different people and invaders for centuries. So Great Britain is full of places with different languages & accents. Over hundreds of years locals couldn’t read or write would shorten the word but wouldn’t spell it. So while the English language evolved the place names haven’t. Which is why many people (Americans included) butcher the names! Because it might look one way but it’s different when you speak it!

Essentially: Pronunciation has shifted since their spelling was standardized.

Yes. I live in Stockport, which (when I try to sell my flat) is pronounced "Mayfair".

British place names are not difficult to pronounce. What you are referring to is that their spelling is often a poor guide to pronunciation. That’s true for much of English spelling. It’s partly due to pronunciation changing since spellings were standardised but also because (unlike, say, the French) we left it to printers to determine standard spellings.
