I empathize with the plight of international students navigating the challenging job market. The competition is already fierce for US citizens, and for non-citizens, the hurdles are even higher. 🌍💼 After graduation, international students seeking sponsorship must go through the process of applying for an OPT visa. While this visa grants a 1-2 year period for job hunting, the clock starts ticking with just 90 days to secure employment. Failing to do so often results in having to leave the USA. ⏳🚫🇺🇸 The pressure to find a job within this 90-day window is incredibly intense, given the circumstances. These students have poured years of hard work into their education with the hope of landing a job. 📚💪 To companies with the resources, I implore you to explore the idea of hiring international students and offering sponsorship. A few years ago, I wrote a post on Quora about interview process for Principal Engineer role at Amazon. In that post, I shared my own experiences as the recruiter owning that hiring process, as well as tips from other Principal Engineers who had been through the process. Even today, I get weekly emails and messages from senior engineers who saw that post and want to learn more about the Amazon interview. We often end up talking about more than just Amazon. 2024 Tough Year for Tech Jobs: Suggestions for Companies & USCIS! In 2024, the tech job market has drastically shifted, posing significant challenges for new graduates who are now competing with more experienced professionals with large scale layoffs in Tesla, Cisco, PwC, Intel & more due to company restructuring and the rise of AI. New graduates in computer science and engineering fields in the US along with international students (the no's are insane), are entering a job market with over 124,000 tech workers laid off by mid-2024 alone adding to the already laid off tech workers in 2022 and 2023. With hardly any active tech job postings compared to the laid off professionals, the market is struggling to absorb both new graduates and experienced laid-off workers. This trend is expected to continue as more international students graduate next year. I am receiving an insane number of cold outreaches from recent grads as well as followers seeking job opportunities. Pressure on Visa Holders: For international students and visa holders, this situation is particularly scary. OPT-EAD holders have just 60 days to secure a job after graduation or termination. H1B visa holders face similar deadlines, risking their visa status due to the delays in the hiring process caused by the oversaturated job market. I request to companies who are hiring: Speeding up the hiring process: Companies should streamline phone screens, coding assessments, and interviews, offering timely updates at each stage to save candidate's valuable time. Be transparent about hiring timelines: Job descriptions should clearly state if the role is for immediate hiring or a candidate pipeline for future opportunity. This will help candidates make informed decisions whether to apply. I request USCIS to consider the following temporary measures to provide relief: Extend Visa Grace Periods: Temporarily extend visa grace periods for OPT-EAD and H1B employees who are laid off. Here are 5 steps I took to navigate my last layoff: I didn’t realize number 4 was so important! Whether you see an impending layoff doom, or you understand how volatile the job market is right now, you should be prepared. 1) Keep a brag document This should have information about what projects you worked on, and the specifics about the value you delivered and what was actually accomplished.  Think of projects you worked on or amount of money/time you saved the company. 2) Gather important documents You won’t have access to these after you’re impacted.  Get things like performance reviews, compensation/benefits, promotions, offer letters, etc. 3) Network with your coworkers Assemble a list of people you can reach out to.  Maybe they were on your team, or an adjacent team or management.  Find a way to contact them.  These will be the first people you’ll talk to as you start your job search.  Also, ask for LinkedIn recommendations! 4) Decide on what’s next Take time to get some clarity on what you want next.  You’re in a liminal period, and it’s a perfect time to consider what you want.  Maybe it’s a pivot.  Maybe it’s some time to refresh.  Whatever it is, take at least 1 hour to figure it out. 5) Create some structure Take time to organize your day.  I’d recommend something like 3 hours of job search, 2 hours of self care, 3 hours of job search, and then 2 hours of something you want to do (think hobbies).  Now stick to your new schedule. Layoffs are hard no matter how you look at it.  Take some time this week to cover your bases and get sorted out.

I feel sad for international students. It is already a tough market for US citizens, and I can't even imagine searching for a job as a non-citizen. As an international student needing sponsorship, you typically apply for an OPT visa after graduation, which is good for 1-2 years, but you only have 90 days to find a job. Or you have to leave the US. Right now, finding a job in 90 days is hard. Really hard. Those students worked so hard for 4+ years with the vision of getting a job. I was in their shoes and could not imagine being sent home because I couldn't find a job. Companies; if you have the resources, I would encourage you to look into hiring International students (and sponsoring them). Sharing My GOOGLE SWE 2025 Interview Experience - About a month ago, I received an email from Google notifying me that my resume had been shortlisted for a technical interview for their Software Engineering role. The initial screening call was a 15-20 minute conversation about my projects, problem-solving experience on different platforms and my academic background. I was then given three weeks to prepare for the interview, along with some helpful study resources. In those three weeks, I diligently solved different DSA problems. It wasn’t just about learning algorithms but also about gaining a deeper understanding of problem-solving patterns. This process really helped me sharpen my logic and appreciate how fundamental DSA concepts are for both interviews and actual software development. In my first-round interview, I was asked a question related to graphs. I was able to successfully solve and code the problem on the spot, explaining my thought process along the way. It was a rewarding experience, and I was thrilled to receive an email the following day informing me that I had cleared the first round and would be advancing to the next round. The second round was another intense technical session where I couldn't fully complete the solution, we had a constructive discussion on different approaches, optimization strategies, and time complexity. This experience taught me the importance of confidently communicating ideas, staying calm under pressure, and keeping a positive mindset even when the solution isn't perfect. Unfortunately, despite my efforts, I didn’t make it past the final round. While the rejection was disappointing, I see this journey as a victory in itself. Making it to the second round at Google in my first-ever interview of this scale is something I’m incredibly proud of. This experience has motivated me even more to keep learning, growing, and preparing for future opportunities. This isn't the end—it’s just the beginning. My Google Interview Experience Hi everyone, I’m excited to share my recent interview experience with Google, hoping it provides insights for those preparing for similar opportunities. After applying consistently since May, I received an email in October from a Google recruiter informing me that my resume had been shortlisted for a Software Engineer (SWE) role. I was thrilled to proceed to the next step. The interview took place on November 8th and focused on a problem that combined strings and file handling. While it reminded me of a LeetCode problem, Google’s signature twist made it unique and challenging. Initially, I felt stuck, but the interviewer provided a helpful hint that steered me in the right direction. I managed to complete my code within the Google Doc just in time. I couldn’t fully explain my solution due to time constraints, but the interviewer assured me that my code would be shared with the recruiter for further evaluation. This experience was both demanding and enlightening. It taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure and being open to guidance when tackling complex problems. For anyone preparing for Google interviews, I highly recommend focusing on problem-solving techniques and brushing up on foundational concepts. Believe in yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification during the interview.
