Theory: Wenwu chose to die.
The rings gave him immortality, which should include being protected from soul suckers (even if for a while), and this is supported by the fact that he didn't die initially, cf. everyone else whose souls left them almost immediately. Wenwu's soul only left him after he gave up the rings. He 100% could have used the rings to fight back or at least free himself even if he didn't have the right energy to kill the Dweller in Darkness (I'm assuming Shangqi could because of the power from the Dragon). So it wasn't a matter of having to sacrifice himself so Shangqi could escape.
My take is he chose to die to be with Ying Li after finally realising that he can't bring her back. She was more important to him than anything: certainly more than the rings (which he first gave up for her), and even more than his children (whom he let go of and only reached out to once he thought he could get her back again). So if she couldn't come back to him, he would follow her, by giving up the rings a second time.
Wenwu is a tragic character if I ever saw one.

Above, the meaning of the second line is actually completely different; the emphasis is on the fact that already conquered so much yet wanted more; not what he was chasing.The proper pinyin of Ta Lo is “Taluo”, which I’ve used here.Same here, Shang-Chi is actually “Shangqi” in Chinese pinyin.This one is extremely simplified in the subtitles, not sure why because it can’t be a speed thing, she says three separate sentences that they could have translated.Not sure why this wasn’t subbed lolI think this difference is interesting because the subs imply the guy was almost misleading, i.e. you have to sign this to get in the building, but the actual Mandarin is very vague, all he says is to sign there.The last phrase here is “你别把我扔在这”, with the “扔” meaning “throw”, so even more literally it translates as “don’t throw me away here”. It gives an extra sense of abandonment that the subs don’t capture.Don’t move your head, WenwuGuang Bo’s line here is harsher in Mandarin, and I think hits especially hard in light of how “Go back to where you came from” is classically thrown at Asian immigrants. There’s intense irony in the line coming from the other side, that the subtitles don’t convey. English subs censored his swearing lolHere Guang Bo says “混账”, which is an insult, usually used when someone has just said something extremely disrespectful. Here Wenwu calls him “小子”, “小” meaning “small”. “Young man” is a much too polite translation of the phrase there. Then his last line is a Chinese idiom, “我吃的盐比你吃的饭还多” which is used to show how much more experience one has than the person you’re talking to.I prefer “Come back alive” tbhAnyway I hope this was interesting, translating is obviously not an easy art so this isn’t meant to suggest better subs, I just wanted to share what non-Chinese speakers might have missed out on because the experience was truly better being able to understand both languages. I thought it was odd when the subtitles went from “thousands” to “thousand”.nitefise-art I think the reason it got translated as one thousand is because the original isn't very explicit. The original Mandarin is "他早已称霸千年"; 他 meaning "he"; 早 meaning "early" and 已 meaning "already", so I guess an even more accurate translation there would be "he had long since"; 称霸 means conquer, or dominate; and then finally 千年, 千 meaning "thousand" and 年 meaning "year". So completely literally, "he had long since dominated for thousand years". Now the thing with Mandarin is there are no plural markers to nouns themselves. It generally takes other words to show number (eg 两匹马 meaning "two horses", with the horse always being 马 and the number indicated by 两匹 meaning "two of"). Here there's no numerical indicator of how many thousand, so in that sense it might be ambiguous, but my understanding is when 千年 is left indefinite it means the plural, but no specific number. Of course there is also an express way to say "thousands" without identifying the number, 上千年, with 上 meaning upwards of, but still if the intended meaning were only one thousand years, it would have been far more natural to say 一千年, 一 meaning "one".
