Zhenhao Zou , a
national studying for a PhD at
University College London (UCL), had drugged and raped 10 women, recording the attacks as “souvenirs” for his “private sexual gratification”.
Zou, who was described as a “persistent sexual predator”, allegedly used illegal narcotics and alcohol to render his victims unconscious before raping them.
The 27-year-old is accused of 35 separate offences, including 11 counts of rape against 10 different women, voyeurism, possessing extreme pornographic images, false imprisonment and possessing controlled drugs with intent to supply.
Zou came to Britain in Sep 2017 and began studying for an undergraduate degree at Queen’s University in Belfast. In 2019, he moved to London where he started a Master’s degree at UCL and two years later embarked on a PhD at the same university.
In May 2023 a woman came forward to police claiming to have been raped by a man who had given her a large quantity of alcohol at his student accommodation.
As a result, Zou was arrested by officers from Scotland Yard and his electronic devices, including a mobile phone and two cameras, were seized and examined.
Detectives uncovered recordings which appeared to show a man having sex with a string of unidentified unconscious women, dating back to Sep 2019.
While searching Zou’s flat, police also recovered a quantity of drugs that had the capability of “stupefying” a person. This included MDMA or ecstasy, butanediol, ketamine and Xanax.
