The Aeronautical Journal is the world’s oldest aeronautics journal currently in publication and has for over a century been the UK's leading scientific and technical aeronautical journal. From January 2022 the Journal will no longer be published in hardcopy format.

With these changes and drawing upon the traditions, experience and expertise of the Royal Aeronautical Society, The Aeronautical Journal will continue to publish the best quality research papers covering all forms of flight vehicles; from gliders to fighters, rockets to airliners, airships to UAVs and rotorcraft to satellites making valuable contributions to our understanding of key areas of aerospace engineering.

Created in 1897 by the then Honorary Secretary of the Society, Captain B F S Baden-Powell, a younger brother of the founder of the Boy Scout movement, 124 volumes of The Aeronautical Journal have provided a continuous record of aeronautical achievements. Legendary contributors to The Aeronautical Journal include: Wilbur Wright, Frank Whittle, F.W. Lanchester, Sir Frederick Handley Page, Juan Trippe, Igor Sikorsky.

In collaboration with Cambridge University Press, The Aeronautical Journal provides a forum for authors from the UK and overseas, from academia, research establishments and industry, and acts as a respected platform for presenting work and research to an international audience. Each paper has been thoroughly refereed by a renowned international team of associate editors and reviewers, all of whom are esteemed experts in their field. Book reviews focussing on aerospace engineering publishing and its related fields are also published in The Aeronautical Journal.
