Since Android 7, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) reveals hidden files (dot before files, like .example). This is a welcome change because it ensures the completeness of backups. MTP on Android 7 also reveals file names that end with .tmp. They were hidden in Android 6 and earlier.

Also since Android 7, PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) only shows "Camera" and "Pictures" folders instead of all folders.

PTP only reveals the date and time stamps of files, not folders.

PTP only reveals picture files (JPG, PNG), but files of any type can be added.

These observations have apparently never been documented before, so I just posted it here to fill in the record.

You’ve made some really good points about how MTP and PTP have changed since Android 7. MTP now shows hidden files and .tmp files, which is better for backups, while PTP is more limited, only showing the "Camera" and "Pictures" folders and just timestamps for files. Looks like this hasn’t been documented before, so thanks for sharing!
