“Girls go first, you stay here.”

This short phrase, coming from an adult whom I respected and listened to, hurt me every single time. It created an impossible barrier between the other girls and me.

My First Memory

“Girls go first, you stay here" is the first phrase said by my teacher that comes to mind when I’m asked about my primary school. I heard it countless times while waiting in line at the school cafeteria. This short phrase, coming from an adult whom I respected and listened to, hurt me every single time. It created an impossible barrier between the other girls and me.

I tried arguing with the teacher, but it was pointless since I was seen as a boy and was expected to behave like one. Several times, I complained to my boy friends about this unfairness, but they just shrugged and ignored my words. I knew I shouldn't be separated from the other girls but couldn't do anything about it. I was excluded, thrown out.

In the first grades, I had a couple of friends who were boys and four who were girls. I tried to be the fifth one, as…

A strong rejection of toys, games, or activities typical of one's assigned gender.

The authors of the DSM should change this in the next edition. Most children play with all kind of toys, and many play sports.
