After your first graduate job, no-employer cares what grades you got in Uni. The most important transition you can make is from 'always being the smartest', to 'working well with others'. Organisations don't care about ONE individual being the best. That's of no use to them. What they care about is entire DIVISIONS being the best. That's how they keep competitive advantage. Learn the skills of: Reading the room Adapting your behaviour Presenting with purpose Deep listening Focusing your attention Speaking up Handling conflict Influencing without authority These skills will serve you far better than your degree. What an amazing time at the AAGE conference last week! 🤩 Reflecting upon the talks and conversations from the conference, here are some of the key takeaways: For Employers: ✅ Wellbeing: A massive focus was ensuring a smooth transition from university to the workplace. Providing ample support can make this change less daunting, more exciting, and allow more growth and development from your graduates. ✅ Culture of Questions: Encouraging graduates to ask questions is vital. It not only helps them learn but also boosts their confidence to innovate and succeed. For Graduates: ✅ Communication: It's crucial for growth and development within any organisation. DEAR HIRING MANAGERS, We are not easy (picks), we are tough. Student are often known as a easy-to-get asset in the organisation. My bad for not mentioning INTERNATIONAL STUDENT We arrive in a land where we have no family or friends, yet we manage to survive each day. Despite facing diversity, cultural shock, and numerous other barriers in a completely new environment, we persevere. I remember spending 30 minutes just to order food that might like—simply because of my unfamiliar in the local cuisine and its ingredients. Yet, I survived. You survived. We all are surviving. It's the small daily reminders that this is new territory, and there's much to learn. Yet, have you ever heard an international student say it's too overwhelming, that they can't handle it? No. We are among the most motivated individuals, navigating life and its challenges. Assign us any role, and rest assured, we have endured so many ups and downs that the soft skills for which companies pay experts, branding them as "corporate training and seminars," are merely fancy terms to us. We've lived those skills. After all this, do you still think we would settle for less? Absolutely not. We have entire lives waiting for us back home. One thing I love about awards is the platform they create—not just for recognition but for voicing and advocating for the things you deeply care about. Recently, I had the chance to share my thoughts on a topic close to my heart: creating more opportunities for international students and graduates in the Northern Territory (NT). NT is truly an amazing place for students and graduates. Unlike larger cities, it offers relatively more opportunities, making it easier to land a job in your field of study. But here’s the truth: we can do much more. Too many talented graduates are driving Ubers or working in roles that don’t utilise their talent and energy. If we can invest thought, time, and resources into making graduates more employable, the ripple effect would be transformative—benefiting graduates, local businesses, universities, and colleges, and ultimately boosting the NT economy.
