Writers, especially new writers, often have a set of beliefs about what writing is and what being a writer entails. Many of these beliefs are valuable and serve us as we develop our skills and grow in our writing careers. However, some beliefs are less helpful; some can be harmful.

We rarely question our beliefs because once we believe something, belief bias sets in, and we tend to dismiss or resist anything that seems to challenge that belief. Instead, we look for proof that what we believe is true, which reinforces that belief and makes it more firmly affixed. A belief sets up a cascade of effects because our actions follow that belief.
