Zelenskiy expressed reservations at any prospect of a direct Trump-Putin channel opening outside his purview. It reflects Ukraine’s broad diplomatic aim to first get allies on side – as well as the nations of the Global South – before moving to any diplomatic solution with Putin. It’s not an approach that’s yielded dividends so far for Zelenskiy. In Davos a year ago, his major push was for a Swiss-hosted meeting. That took place in June, but China was a no-show, while Brazil, India and South Africa were not on board.
