What is that 'thing' is in the middle of Arceus body?

VampirateMace

Internet Overlord
There's lots of possiblities;

It's just natural decoration
It's a fasion belt Arecus can't stand being seen without
It's a unknown that somehow became intwined in Arecus body
It's a power guard to keep Arecus from destroying the universe on accident
It's where Arecus' power comes from

I guess it's whatever you want it to be...

It's something Game Freak decided to add on to his sprite.

Daimona

Hero of Truth
It reminds me of a wheel, which is a buddhist symbol representing the eight ways to reach nirvana. And arceus is the "creator" pokemon... But I'm probably over-interpreting it.

Yonowaru in Chaos

gaspard de la nuit
^Good old GPD.

Other than being his personalised uZap slimming belt, I'm of the opinion that it's probably what makes Arceus' purpose significant. Apart from that, the rest can be (randomised) speculation.

chrombot

The Steel Hearted
They remind of antlers, except not on the head.
Arceus kind of reminds me of the forest spirit from princess mononoke too.

Mew-100

Future Scriptwriter!
I think it absorbs the power of the Type Plates.

It is a source that provides him with the power that allows him to control the universe. It cana also be the power that allows Arceus to control his own destructive power.

PsychedelicJellyfish

formerly R. New
It's a back brace. There are no chiropractors in the Hall of Origin.

...

It's an add on to his sprite which was put there because he looks terrible without it. Not cool.

A piece of decoration that evokes holy symbols, such as the sun, wheels, and rays of light, that also can easily display the change in type when it holds one of the plates.

And maybe it keeps Arcues in a physical, comprehendible form, assuming of course it's godly, and not *just* some awesome powerful Pokemon living someplace inaccessible that was used for by ancients to explain the creation of the world.

Actually I think you're spot on, or at least closer than any one else has been so far.

I personally think Arceus is based on the tibetan Buddhist concept of Avalokitesvara. My reasoning coming from this extract of the "Lonely Planet: Mongolia" book that I came across whilst trekking in that country:

Avalokitesvara (Janraisig) The Glorious Gentle One, he is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and is either pictured with 11 heads and 1000 arms (Chogdanjandan janraisig) or in a white four armed manisfestation (Chagsh janraisig). The Dalai Lama is considered an incarnation of Avalokitesvara.

Now, in Arceus' dex entry it says he "shaped the universe with his thousand arms" which sounds a lot like Chogdanjandan janraisig. As for the normal arceus we have its easy to see him as the white four armed manifestation (Chagsh janraisig). The arms could be the prongs of the wheel in the middle. The legs also look a lot like arms themselves to, just lacking hands. Lastly, tonnes have people have noticed the resemblence between Arceus and a Llama.

[Dalai] lama = Llama, gettit? Pokemon is known for bad jokes.

Here's the link if you guys want to see said extract for yourself (I scanned it).

My instinct was that it was a roll over cage in case he fell over... Only because the thought of the creator god of the Pokemon universe rolling down a hill at top speed amused me.

I can certify that it is totally atypical for a kirin, but since this was designed by Japanese based off of a Chinese turned Japanese creature, the Buddhist connection is the most logical.
