There is nothing wrong about so-called "plagiarism".

In the early 2010s, Apple sued Samsung and wanted to get Samsung barred from selling in the USA. Samsung was accused of having plagiarized Apple back in 2010 and 2011.

So what? Even though Samsung might have plagiarized Apple, Samsung created a superior product in the end.

Samsung's smartphone had a MicroSD card slot, replaceable battery, more customizable operating system that allows third-party installations ("sideloading") and third-party file managers, no fragile glass back, and navigation keys instead of unused bezel space at the bottom. The iPhone had none of these things. Apple dictates everything the user is allowed to install.

As the end user, why would you care who copied whom? Samsung copied Apple in 2010? So be it. What matters in the end is who makes the better product.

Taking someone else's idea and improving upon it is a normal part of human progress since stone age. It is the root of all innovation. Yet greedy Apple opposed it.

I am not so proud of modern Android and Android-based smartphones actually. They have become quite locked down (like iOS) compared to early "OG" Android.

Original Android and Android-based smartphones were easily modifiable, not so locked down (file access, possibilities for third-party applications), and didn't have iPhone-like anti-features like non-replaceable and serialized batteries.

Non-replaceable batteries escalated to heavily glued-in and serialized batteries. This is why evil has to be stopped at an early stage.

i agree with this sorta, but actually to back up your original arguement, apple is guilty of plagirism now. all these "inovations" are stuff team green has had for years. its like ever since cook took over they lost thier funk.

indeed apple's guilty of sometimes "inventing" already existing feature, regardless if their take is better or not, they have quite literally been copying others too, so it's strange to sue someone for something they've done themselves

That isn't what plagiarism is, the issue with plagiarism is not giving credit. Which in a legal sense between corporations can mean licensing and paying royalties.

Protecting your position through your dominance is a function of monopolistic markets, it is not the same concept as giving individuals credit for their ideas.

Not really. Samsung actually did pretty much all of the things they got sued for before android was even out. USA court system just is mega flawed and Apple won a lawsuit after they copied Samsung. Apple has not invented anything in smart phones, just leached out of others and used the money USA companies have to get crucial IP for free from Ericsson and Nokia.

Nothing invented besides selling the FIRST smartphone.

I don't think anyone wants to copy that Samsung clusterf$$k OS.

I don't like Apple, but I appreciate they started the smartphone.

Source?

One can argue what makes a phone smart. But when the iPhone came out, no other commercially available phone had the same features in a similar package at an affordable price.

Yeah this is definitely going to turn into an argument of semantics.

One would could call PDAs and Blackberry Bolds smartphones, I guess.

But it's also inarguable that the introduction of the iPhone was a paradigm shift for the entire industry.

Was the iPhone considered affordable with respect to its features at the time? I remember seeing the price when it was first announced and thinking "holy shit, who can afford that?" and apparently a lot of people could.

Yeah, those touchscreens will never catch on.......

BTW, I hate the term "smart" for devices. Before they use true AI, they aren't smart.
