What are Cloudinary credits?

Cloudinary credits track three key resources in managing media on your website:

  • Monthly Transformations:
    Every time you upload a file or apply any modification (like resizing, compressing, or adding filters), it counts as a transformation.
  • Managed Storage:
    This refers to the total space your files take up on Cloudinary, including original uploads and any backups.
  • Monthly Net Viewing Bandwidth:
    This is the total data used when users view or download the images or videos on your website.

With the free plan, you get 25 monthly credits. Each 1 credit gives you:
  • 1,000 transformations or
  • 1 GB of managed storage or
  • 1 GB of viewing bandwidth.

Each month, our system checks how many transformations, storage, and bandwidth you’ve used and automatically allocates your credits against your usage. You can mix and match, meaning a credit can be split between these resources depending on your needs. As your needs change month to month, the credit distribution changes as well.

Example 1: Small Website

  • Traffic: 10,000 visitors per month
  • Average Images per Page: 3
  • Number of Pages: 15
  • Average Pages Viewed per User: 2
  • Monthly Viewing Bandwidth Calculation:
    • 10,000 visitors × 2 pages × 3 images = 60,000 image views per month.
    • Assuming each image is around 100 KB in size (optimized with Cloudinary):
    • 60,000 images × 100 KB = 6 GB of bandwidth = 6 credits.
  • Transformation Calculation:
    We have 45 total images, let's assume each image needs to be resized for 4 breakpoints (mobile, tablet, 2 desktop) and 4 formats (jpg, webp, avif, jpeg xl). That means we need 720 transformations. 720 transformations = 0.725 credits.
  • Storage Calculation:
    Let’s assume that each original image stored takes an average of 500 KB. 45 original images × 500 KB = 22,500 KB = 22.5 MB of storage. 1 credit allows for 1 GB of storage, so 22.5 MB of storage would be negligible, using < 1 credit.
  • Credit Usage:
    • 6 GB of bandwidth = 6 credits
    • 720 transformations < 1 credit.
    • 22.5 MB of storage < 1 credit.
    • Total credits used: < 8 credits

    This small website uses less than 8 of the 25 available credits, so they would still have plenty of resources left for additional storage or further transformations.

Example 2: Large Website

  • Traffic: 100,000 visitors per month
  • Average Images per Page: 5
  • Number of Pages: 50
  • Average Pages Viewed per User: 3
  • Monthly Viewing Bandwidth Calculation:
    • 100,000 visitors × 3 pages × 5 images = 1,500,000 Image views per month.
    • Assuming each image is around 100 KB in size (optimized with Cloudinary):
    • 1,500,000 images × 100 KB = 150 GB of bandwidth = 150 credits.
  • Transformation Calculation:
    We have 250 total images, let's assume each image needs to be resized for 4 breakpoints (mobile, tablet, 2 desktop) and 4 formats (jpg, webp, avif, jpeg xl). That means we need 2000 transformations. 2000 transformations = 2 credits.
  • Storage Calculation:
    Let’s assume that each original image stored takes an average of 500 KB. 250 original images × 500 KB = 125,500 KB = 125 MB of storage. 1 credit allows for 1 GB of storage, so 125 MB of storage would be negligible, using < 1 credit.
  • Credit Usage:
    • 150 GB of bandwidth = 150 credits
    • 2000 transformations < 2 credit.
    • 125 MB of storage < 1 credit.
    • Total credits used: < 153 credits

    This larger website exceeds the 25-credit limit of the free plan, and would need to upgrade to a paid plan to accommodate its traffic and image usage.
