Monday, May 3, 1976 Honolulu Star-Bulletin Hokule'a: a Sail Through History Somewhere out in the vastness of the world's largest ocean, 17 men and women are pitting their skills and determination against the elements-to prove a point. They are on board the Hokule'a, a 60-foot double-hulled replica of an early Polynesian voyaging canoe that sailed Saturday day from Maui. And they are out to prove that the early voyagers of the Pacific could and did travel between Hawaii and Tahiti in both directions. Behind them are years of planning. Behind them are months of building building canoes, equipment and skills building the have taken to make drive and it must determinations similar crossings in similar canoes.
