Sonic Marshmallow Cannon
About this project:
The Sonic Marshmallow Cannon is a Super Sonic Expert Level Project, appealing to kids
of all ages but requiring more skill and time to build than other SonicDad projects. This
cannon is designed for shooting a mini-marshmallow projectile, and is powered by
common 91% rubbing alcohol. When a lightly saturated fuel sponge is inserted into the
cannon’s combustion chamber, alcohol vapor mixes with oxygen to create a flammable
mixture. When the igniter button on the cannon is pressed, the combustible gas ignites,
producing a loud sonic boom and launching a mini marshmallow!
What’s it made of?
The Sonic Marshmallow Cannon is made from PVC pipe and fittings for the base,
combustion chamber, and barrel. The barrel heat sink is made from a drain pipe fitting.
The oxygen pump is made from a small sporting goods ball pump. A small screw is used
to prevent the marshmallow projectile from falling back into the combustion chamber.

Assemble the cannon base as shown. Glue all of
the joints to assemble the base except for the
joints noted on the middle pivot tee. This will
allow for the cannon barrel angle to be adjusted
on the finished cannon. (fig. 4)
Step 4
Rev:03/04/
Attach tape to bottom of nipple
and fill half way with glue
Attach a piece of packing tape or masking tape to
the bottom of the remaining 1/2” PVC pipe nipple.
Fill the nipple half way full of high temp hot glue
as shown. Let the glue cool and remove the tape.
(fig. 8)
Step 8
Use a drill and 1/8” drill bit to drill a hole through
one side of a 1” x 1/2” slip reducer bushing. Drill
the hole 3/4” from the edge as shown. Use a 9/32”
drill bit to create a relief for a #6 flat head sheet
metal screw as shown. (fig. 5)

Remove the cap on the rear of the pump. Carefully
remove the piston assembly and set it aside for
reassembly after painting. (fig. 14)
Step 14
Apply a large bead of glue all the way around the
pump outlet as shown. (fig. 12)
Step 12
Working quickly while the glue is still hot, attach
the pump, centered on the marking and hole as
shown. Hold the pump in position until the glue
has cooled. Apply a bead of glue along each side
of the joint between the pump and chamber as
shown. Be sure to keep glue off of the cap at
the rear of the pump so that it can be removed
(fig. 13)
Step 13

Apply glue around
the pump outlet
This part is just a little
tricky. You need to apply
enough glue to seal the
pump outlet, but not too
much, or the excess glue
may plug the inlet hole on
the combustion chamber!
This is just right... Cool!

Print the hole template from page 28, full scale

cutting on the outside lines. (fig. 18)
Step 18
Use a large bead of glue to attach a 3/4” PVC cap
and plug together in the orientation shown. (fig. 15)
Step 15
Prepare the combustion chamber for painting by
installing the 3/4” modified plug in the rear and
a 1” PVC plug in the top, just finger tight, then
loosen one turn. Use masking tape to mask the
1/2” nipple and the bore of the pump as shown.
Use a scrap piece of 1/2” PVC pipe as a handle
for painting. Clean all surfaces with rubbing
alcohol. (fig. 16)

The heat sink on the cannon barrel is optional. If
you wish to add the heat sink, check the fit
between the 1” x 1/2” reducer bushing and the
drain pipe extension piece. The bushing should
fit snuggly inside the small diameter of the
drain pipe. Modify the bushing outside diameter
as needed for the desired fit. (fig. 17)

Slide the heat sink onto the cannon barrel. Twist
the barrel snugly into the combustion chamber.
Position the heat sink so there is about an 1/8”
(3 mm) gap between the heat sink and the
combustion chamber as shown. Carefully mark
the heat sink location on the barrel as shown.
(fig. 25)
Step 25
Use a hand or power saw to carefully cut the
bushing down to 1/2” (13mm) long as shown. Use
sand paper to remove burrs. (fig. 23)
Step 23
Temporarily press the bushing into the end of
the heat shield as show. DO NOT GLUE! The
bushing will be glued in place in a later step.
(fig. 24)
Step 24
We need to mark the
location of the heat sink
on the barrel so we can
glue the bushing on in a
later step, so first slide
the heat sink onto the
barrel. Then twist the
barrel into the
combustion chamber.
Now you can slide the
heat sink up to the edge
of the combustion
chamber. I like to leave
a small gap like this.
Now mark a line around
the barrel so you'll know
where to glue the
bushing... cool!

Apply two coats of paint on the combustion
chamber. Spray-on truck bed liner can also be
used on the combustion chamber, barrel, heat
sink, and base feet for a durable, textured
finish. (fig. 28)
Step 28
Remove the bushing from the heat sink and use
PVC cement to attach it to the barrel on the
marked line as shown. Mask the areas shown on
the heat sink and barrel and clean with rubbing
alcohol to prepare for painting. (fig. 26)
Step 26
Apply two coats of spray paint for plastics on
the base, the color of your choice. (fig. 27)
Step 27
I like to use spray-on truck bed liner
on the combustion chamber, barrel,
heat sink, and base feet because it
gives you a tough finish but also has
some texture... cool! You can also use
just a nice gloss or flat black spray
paint. It’s your cannon - you get to
decide!

have a few screws holding the housing together.

Step 36
Working quickly while the cement is still wet,
carefully insert the barrel into the heat sink
piece as shown. (fig. 33)
Step 33
Position the heat sink flush with the bushing on
the barrel. Before the glue sets, check the
alignment at the back of the barrel to be sure
it’s centered in the open end of the heat sink.

Remove the masking on the combustion chamber
and re-assemble the air pump. Glue the three

Use an X-acto knife to cut a small hole in the
center of the end of the igniter button by
twisting the knife point. Use a bead of hot glue
to secure a metal thumbtack in the end of the
button as shown. (fig. 40)
Step 40
Remove the piezoelectric igniter unit with wires
as shown. Bend the wires oriented down and
apply glue around the wires to secure them to
the igniter, creating a wire strain relief. Then
twist the wires as shown. (fig. 37)
Step 37
Drill a 5/32” (4mm) hole in the center of the 1”
plug. Use an X-acto knife to scrape off the paint
and rough up the surface on the plug wall above
the hole as shown. Removing the paint will help
the glue to adhere to the plastic. (fig. 38)
Step 38
Feed the igniter wires through the hole in the

Use a hand or power saw to cut each of the PVC
pipe pieces and nipples indicated on the shopping
list. Remove the burrs for each cut piece using 150
grit sandpaper. Glue each subassembly together as
shown in the following steps using PVC pipe primer
and glue. Some PVC glues are combined with primer.
It’s a good idea to work on a surface such as a
piece of poster board – gluing PVC pipe together
can be messy. (fig. 1)
