We're going to dive in with more depth on this, exploring why Bluesky's content tools are the second worst we've encountered in a long, rich history of internet censorship (just behind Meta, which are *awful).
The long and short of it is: language matters. https://masto.ai/@vagina_museum/113758600647452231
Bluesky is a platform which automatically slaps content warnings on posts. It also offers very limited options for putting warnings on your own posts, which look like this.
As you'll see, there's a lot of options for "adult". Which is a *very* loaded term.
Now here's a fun fact: it's not only adults that have vaginas and vulvas. Most of you probably don't need to know this, but about 50% of children have this part of the anatomy, too. And most of these children came out of a vagina. Instagram/Meta is particularly egregious for flagging and shadow-banning anything that even so much as uses anatomically correct language, thus obscuring content which, frankly, young people probably *should* be able to access.
The other two options under the umbrella of "adult" are equally inadequate. "Suggestive" is simply baffling and ill-defined. And "nudity" is NOT a neutral term. Nudity is a concept steeped in cultural attitudes, and in the anglo-sphere is linked to misogyny and colonialism.
Consider, for example, the empires which forced Indigenous people to abandon their traditional attire and instead adopt the colonisers' "modest" attire.
Another example of the construct of nudity is that if a man with a flat chest walks bare-chested down the street, in an anglo country this is NOT nudity. If a woman with breasts does the same, this *is* nudity, and will likely result in negative consequences.
So nudity is not neutral. Adult content is not neutral. And the individuals creating automated content warning tools or content labels are most certainly not neutral either.
This use of non-neutral language creates a vicious circle wherein these taboos and attitudes are reinforced and amplified. This has real-world consequences - for example, 65% of women under 25 have a problem with using the word "vagina".
(we would also like to spare a thought for the poor souls who open a post marked "adult" in anticipation of finding some porn, and are instead confronted by things like an 18th century medical illustration of the major pelvic blood vessel. Not a primary victim, but sorry)
Content warnings can - and should - be neutral and specific. We like to do this! For example, here's the content warning section from our website, and further signage is positioned throughout the museum. See how we just describe what's there?
So what would a good content warning system look like on social media? Mastodon does it pretty well, actually. It allows you to write your own warnings. For example, you can warn "photo of a cervix" on a photo of a cervix, or "16th century illustration of a vulva (anatomically incorrect)" on an anatomically incorrect 16th century illustration of a vulva.
This precision means that if someone never wants to see what a cervix looks like, they absolutely don't have to. Or if they're at work, so probably can't look at how hilariously bad da Vinci was at drawing vulvas right now, they can bookmark for later, when at home.
So that's where we're at on this topic. We'd like to see greater neutrality in content filters. We'd like to see language which does not reinforce taboos and stigma. It's possible - but we need to start interrogating the language we use.
P.S. if your interest is piqued and you'd like to see some photos of human cervixes, here ya go: https://masto.ai/@vagina_museum/110571109790648500
And if you're really curious about just how bad da Vinci was at drawing vulvas, here it is: https://masto.ai/@vagina_museum/112275621929822921
And if you'd like to explore neutrality in the museum world a little bit more, our free exhibition "The Museum of Mankind" runs until the end of February... https://www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/visit
@vagina_museum Can I put a word in for Patreon's as a candidate for the Top 3 at least? Do you know about their creepbot?
@vagina_museum Why I'll stick to Mastidon, thank you very much.
@vagina_museum this is a wonderful thread. Combining insights and humour isn't always easy but you managed to make me think and laugh aloud. Kudos. (And I totally agree)
Glad to follow you here on the #Fediverse, seeing you use the words that you want to use, and your posts show up in my timeline.
As they should.
@vagina_museum thank you for the brilliant thread and for bringing these issues to our attention. I had no idea.
All my support to you and also: you have completely revolutionized how I view Leonardo da Vinci. I am haunted by how bad he was at female anatomy. What the what?!?
@_elena @vagina_museum I was brought up to believe that the reason some paintings of nude women are so bad is that the artist had never seen a nude woman.
@vagina_museum I got the impression they weren't one of the many topics he was interested in
Had to look this up, and oh my goodness given his utter dedication to anatomical accuracy, did he just refuse to look at it?? Lol
@vagina_museum it's interesting you ask this, as it is being discussed: https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/issues/41
@thisismissem I’m glad this is being worked on, it’s always bugged me that Mastodon “abuses” the otherwise neutral summary field for this.
@vagina_museum I do think Mastodon does it well. People can put their own warnings on, warning about whatever they need to.
So it is up to the poster to explain what they feel need to.
@vagina_museum I guess people can look it up, but including TLAs in a trigger-warning might not be the most helpful?
@vagina_museum It seems like some people would be a lot happier if you rebranded as "The Foofoo Museum"
@internetsdairy @vagina_museum the VaJayJay Museum
(God, I hate the cutesy euphemisms)
@vagina_museum recently, Facebook banned our post explaining what a "nudist beach" is. The banned image was this.
@euwikipedia
Its probably the single boob vaguely visible on the far right
@vagina_museum
@euwikipedia @vagina_museum is it because of the flags?
@yogiron @euwikipedia @vagina_museum Perhaps the lady centre left, with the big hat with the ribbon on. Her breasts are visible, which is sacrilege on facebork.
@paulzwalker @euwikipedia @vagina_museum that is just a regular human part.
Maybe it is because of some kind of fear for speaking about what’s humane?
Those guy’s on top can hardly be called humane, looking in what they earn compared to what they pay their workers?
@euwikipedia @vagina_museum There's plenty of nude breasts and one guys peen can be made out. Look, its Facebook, not National Geographic. You're never going to be able to post any kind of nudity on Meta, except on IG, and that's inconsistently policed. You're just banging your head against a wall.
This despite the fact that everybody's origin story involves a vagina.
@vagina_museum Or a woman with uncovered mastectomy scars. Not allowed!
@vagina_museum If a man with man boobs walks bare chested down the street, that's not considered nudity either.
@vagina_museum
Anyone who doesn't understand how arbitrary "nudity" as a category for censorship is need only notice what gender someone has to "look like" to have THEIR nipples allowed without getting labeled "nudity" (and therefore, on almost every mainstream playsuit, "sexually explicit")
@vagina_museum Guess double adult would be senior
@vagina_museum I love that.
Adult Content: Adult
@vagina_museum Good to know, it's the typical US-Bigotry like on META where you can't post Renaissance nude paintings but they do nothing against criminal accounts of trafficking in women.
Your work is so important. I wish I had had access to such content when I was 12 years old and my hellish menstrual pain was explained to me as ‘it's just part of it, don't wail like that!' We got our knowledge from a teenage music magazine. But this was in the early 70s, and now we are in 2025.
Keep on!
@vagina_museum @toplesstopics Ayo, thought you may be interested in this thread considering the issues you've been having over there as well
@vagina_museum i've noticed that their moderation tools and practices take an extremely long time to take down fascist and racist messaging, but somehow is always super rapid taking down feminist messaging
@FlexFoot @vagina_museum Just a coincident, I'm sure.

@vagina_museum Nextdoor is worst.
@vagina_museum FFS … my decision to not start on Buesky account after nuking my Xitter account is looking better and better all the time.
Thanks for being here in the #Fediverse.
@vagina_museum They wouldn't let me share a picture of Jason on Friday the 13th for "graphic violence." It was just Jason, he wasn't even BEING Jason.
@vagina_museum Good article here I posted yesterday on the topic. People are starting to realize the drawbacks of #Bluesky conceding the live moderation floor to it’s users.
https://kolektiva.social/@LeftistLawyer/113759753290982234
@vagina_museum great thread, thank you.
@vagina_museum Bluesky didn’t ban you, or your posts. I don’t understand why you’re being so harsh about their moderation just because they put an NSFW tag on your posts, which, to be fair, I don’t want to see unless I’m at a place where I feel comfortable seeing vagina pics.
Bluesky
@atoa@mastodon.social @vagina_museum@masto.ai
If you check the thread you'll notice Bsky didn't even say it was "NSFW:" they said it was "adult." Their AI says children aren't allowed to have vaginas.
@vagina_museum wonderful thread! we just opened a BlueSky account and these are some super interesting insights.
