Description

Cleveland, Ohio: The World Publishing Company, Meridan Books, 1968. Second Enlarged Edition, Twelfth Meridian Printing. Paperback. Good. Second Enlarged Edition, Twelfth Meridian Printing. Paperback. Signed and inscribed by Hannah Arendt to half-title: "To remember / the Colorado meeting / Cordially, / Hannah Arendt." This signed copy of The Origins of Totalitarianism comes from the library of the late Shelton Stanfill, CEO of Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center and Co-Chair of the Atlanta Jewish Film festival, who, at the time of the signature and throughout the 1970s, served as the Director of Cultural Programs at Colorado State University.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) was a Jewish German-born American political theorist and one of the most important political thinkers of the 20th Century. The Origins of Totalitarianism is Arendt's groundbreaking work and her first major book. First published in English in 1951, it forms an analysis of the major totalitarian political movements of the 20th Century, Stalinism and Nazism, structured as three essays, "Antisemitism," "Imperialism," and "Totalitarianism." This is a presentable 1968 paperback edition of Arendt's enduringly relevant and influential work, signed by Arendt herself. Signatures by Hannah Arendt are very uncommon indeed.

Signed by Hannah Arendt. 8" X 5 3/8". xv, 520pp. Moderate wear to color paper wraps, with crease to left edge of upper wrap, to spine, and to rear wrap, soiling, particularly visible to rear, rubbing to edges and extremities, and lean to spine. Foxing to edges of text block, very faint to endpapers, and very occasional to pages. Light soiling to edges of text block. Binding remains firm and sound. Pages are otherwise unmarked.

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York and London, 1968. Reprint. Softcover. Good Condition. Second-hand copy, slight rubbing of the edges of the cover, and, the previous owner has highlighted eight lines on page VII – "the notion of an unbroken continuity of persecutions, expulsions, and massacres from the end of the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages, the modern era, and down to our own time, frequently embellished by the idea that modern anti-Semitism is no more than a secularised version of popular mediaeval superstitions, is no less fallacious (though of course less mischievous) than the corresponding anti-Semitic notion of a Jewish secret society that has ruled, or aspire to rule, the world since antiquity. Historically, the hiatus between the late Middle Ages and the modern age with respect Jewish affairs is even more marked than the rift between Roman antiquity and the Middle Ages, or the golf – frequently considered to be the most important turning point in Jewish… Read More
