Yes, even with a story this dark and emotional, memes are an inevitability.
Please add entries in the following format:
- The meme. [[labelnote:Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme, if necessary.[[/labelnote]] ExplanationLike this.
- Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
- Every Kel meme is canon. ExplanationKel's impulsive and chaotic nature means that the fandom jokingly assumes that he would willingly do pretty much anything, no matter how ridiculous it is. This further mutated into Kel's mere presence being enough for any meme to be declared canon to the game, regardless of his actual involvement.
- Someone call Kel! ExplanationWhenever Kel is absent in any Omori meme or video, fans who wish to see it become canon will jokingly try to bring the boy himself over to the comments section, sometimes with a Kel roleplay account appearing in response.
- Kel was the cameraman ExplanationFans may also handwave Kel's absence in a meme or video by arguing that he is actually somewhere off-screen but nearby, thus making it canon anyway. Claiming that Kel is the one filming events with a camera is one of the more common examples of this.
- Only Kel will drink this/Orange JoeExplanationAn official recipe book was posted on Twitter containing the recipe for Orange Joe: orange juice and coffee. The above disclaimer is a warning to those who would try to recreate it, though it hasn't stopped fans from doing so.
- The reveal of the official plushies of the Headspace party, including one of Kel, prompted remarks that Kel is now canon to real life.
- Smug Mari/"What's cookin', good lookin'?" ExplanationMari's pick-up line when talking to her as Hero, as well as her smug sprite when saying it became heavily asocciated with her character as a whole, leading to her frequently being quoted with the line when discussing her or when writing her in fanfiction.
- "Ayo the pizza here!" Explanation (Spoilers!) CalebCity's viral Vine in which he suffers a Staircase Tumble was quickly compared by the fandom to how Mari died, and the Black Comedy snowballed from there. When the game has a pizza delivery job and uses pizza as one of the strongest healing items, this meme becomes quite sticky.
- "Hey Bobby, play that one about falling down the stairs!" "Sure thing, Johnny!" Explanation (Spoilers!)The very first sketch of asdfmovie5
is also prone to drawing many Black Comedy comparisons to the key event mentioned above, due to Bobby "playing" the song in question by tumbling down the stairs and landing on top of a piano — stairs and pianos being two prominent Arc Symbols found in Omori. It doesn't also help that the name of the two guys in the skit rhymes. - Everyone X Therapy Explanation Due to all the Ship-to-Ship Combat and how messed up most of the character's lives are, some people have decided to combat both of these by jokingly shipping all the characters with the very concept of therapy itself.
- "Please step on me." Explanation Out of all of Sunny's friends, Aubrey is the one that changed the most, going from a Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak to an abrasive punk. Sunburn shippers tend to joke that Sunny would find Aubrey even more attractive and ask her to step on him, hence the quote.
- HERO TAGGED YOU Explanation (Spoilers!) While many fans believe that Sunny's friends would eventually forgive him for his accidental murder of Mari, Hero is often noted to be the one who would take longer than the others due to his love for the latter. Fans tend to exaggerate this into a full-blown hatred towards Sunny, and the aforementioned caption (which appears when Hero passes the leading role to Sunny in the game) is often used as a euphemism for Hero beating him up or worse
◊.- YOU TAGGED BASIL Explanation A mutation of the above meme, though in the opposite direction. Given how popular Sunny/Basil is, the line refers to Sunny and Basil's relationship with the latter kissing the former. It originates here
. - YOU TAGGED MARI Explanation (Spoilers!) Yet another mutation of the meme with a dash of Black Comedy, the caption referring to Sunny accidentally pushing his sister down the stairs.
- YOU FINISHED THE JOB Explanation (Spoilers!) A drawn photo with Sunny stabbing Basil in the hospital with murderous intent over the latter stabbing his eye the night before.
- "My Time" is often used in videos where someone falls from a high place, usually a building.
- Close Explanation It's almost customary for fans to spontaneously start singing "My Time" the moment someone says "close" on its own.
- Clothes Explanation A mishearing of the very first lyric in bo en's "My Time" ("Close... your eyes").
- your mouth Explanation A Tweet from bo en
after someone attempted to invoke the lyrics of "My Time". Many interpret it as an attempt to end the joke. - Oh Ya, Sue Me Explanation A corruption of the word "Oyasumi" that is sung in bo en's "My Time" and Japanese for "good night".
- Commit oyasumi Explanation (Spoilers!) The song features a lot of Gratuitous Japanese, including the word oyasumi (goodnight), and it playing during the ending in which Sunny is Driven to Suicide has led to the word oyasumi being used in the fandom as an Unusual Euphemism for suicide.
- Omori WILL succumb Explanation (Spoilers!)At the finale of the game, the only way Sunny can survive the Hopeless Boss Fight against Omori — his suicidal depression personified — is to placate him by performing the duet recital alongside a manifestation of Mari, using his newly-repaired violin. However, due to the fact that Sunny's violin would also serve as a potential bludgeon, fans often joke that Sunny could instead defeat Omori by simply smashing the instrument over his head, knocking him out cold.
- Omori Drip ExplanationFor whatever reason, crossovers memes with the already popular "Drip" meme (a slang term used to compliment stylish clothes and outfits) have become widespread among the fandom, complete with fanart of Omori wearing the infamous Hypebeast jacket and Nike Jordan sneakers.
- A screenshot of Hero Smiling while Depressednote Easily replicated with the game's mechanics, since Smile will force his Bishie Sparkle regardless of his emotions adequately summarizes a frequent mood the fans experience.
- OMORI rips are highly appreciated. ExplanationOMORI rips were initially a rare sight on the SiIvaGunner channel, so every time one was uploaded this or a variation would often be seen in the comments. As OMORI rips became more common, these comments became more ironic, and different variations started appearing, such as "OMORI rips are not highly appreciated anymore" on a rip featuring Yankin. The trend soon started spreading to every game that never had a rip before.
- Intentional misspellings of Sunny's name, usually accompanied with an Omori plush.
- IT HIT RIGHT IN THE HEART! ExplanationThe message for when you deliver a critical hit is a common response to moments of the game or fan works that are depressing or angsty.
- When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's OMORI
note (Spoilers!)Coincidentally, Pluto (Expanded) can throw the moon at a party member as an attack. - Wake up in the morning, I got burgers on my mind... ExplanationFor some reason, this
parody of YNW Melly's "Murder on My Mind" has been commonly used in edits of the game, and has led to burgers jokingly becoming a Trademark Favorite Food for Kel. - Due to Basil's name, he has often been represented as or imposed over images of the actual basil plant in edits and posts, usually in situations where the basil is to be cooked or eaten.
- Basil and watermelons. Explanation (Spoilers!)In one area of Black Space, Basil will suddenly split like a watermelon after Omori checks numerous melons in the area. Fans love referencing this moment, whether it be editing videos so that the outcome is Basil bursting like a melon or giving Basil trauma just from the mere sight or thought of the fruit.
- OMORBIUS, GAME OF THE MILLENNIUM Explanation a crossover meme with the "Morbius Sweeps" joke about how Morbius is the greatest movie of all time and earned $400 morbillion at the box office, after someone realized the portmanteau potential of "Omori" and "Morbius", plus that putting Sunny and Omori side-by-side could easily replicate the film's poster
. - I OmorExplanation The Omori version of the "I Forgor(skull emoji)" meme, usually made somehow in relation to how Sunny forgot that he killed his sister
- Omor PlushieExplanationIn addition to the aforementioned official plushies, there are a lot of fan-made plushies for people who can't get the official ones for whatever reason. It has become commonplace to pair images of this
◊ plushie in particular with the phrase “I Omor”, or similar memetic captions.
- If bread in French is "pain" then we own a fucking bakery ExplanationA joke commonly cited in relation to the Unbread Twins, which feels particularly appropriate given their connection with bread and the fact that their signature emotion is Sadness.
- Reminder that this came from a psychological horror game ExplanationA common comment on the catchy music and colorful and wacky aspects of the game, contrasting the dark undertones that earned it the "psychological horror" tag on Steam.
- Get on BloonsExplanationSimilar to other "get on X video game" jokes that are superimposed over shocking or otherwise random yet provocative content, this joke refers to a gif of Sunny and Basil kissing with the text "get on bloons" overlaid, usually preceded by a warning like "DO NOT LOOK UP 'GET ON BLOONS' ON TENOR, WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE".
- Dorcelessness Explanation A reference to BLUE CHANNEL: THALASIN
that highlights the similarity between the "Dorcelessness" emotion and Omori's "Furious" portrait (as well as Something) - Sunny out here subconsciously composing bangers ExplanationMany fans assume that the music in the Headspace segments is indeed spontaneously dreamed up by Sunny In-Universe. To this idea's credit, we do know that Sunny is musically talented.
- "MERRY CD" and d.ogg Explanation (Spoilers for Deltarune Chapter 2!)After the release of Deltarune Chapter 2 and the subsequent discovery of the Weird Route, a handful of people noticed that d.ogg
, the track that plays before you fight Berdly in the Weird Route, shared the same bassline as "MERRY CD"
, which was also composed by Toby Fox. It also helps that "MERRY CD" is a Christmasy song and Noelle, the Weird Route's linchpin, is a Christmas-themed character. Cue the ever so common "Toby is either a genius or lazy" jokes found in the Undertale and Deltarune communities. - That one OMORI music that plays when your friends beat you up
Explanation (Spoilers!)In the console versions of the game, Omori and Basil fight copies of Kel, Aubrey, and Hero after Humphrey in the Hikikomori-route-exclusive Boss Rush. Some have joked about the latter three friends not immediately forgiving Sunny and Basil for the truth, or that their Headspace selves would fight Sunny on sight after the good ending. - me playing omori (its bad) vs me playing yiik (its amazing) ExplanationIronic texts made by people comparing OMORI to YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG, particularly considering that the latter game is Overshadowed by Controversy and considered to have rather sloppily handled dark themes it shares with OMORI.
- ShikiOMORI: the Sunburn/Sunbrey anime. Explanation The main couple, Izumi and the titular Shikimori, have an uncanny physical resemblance to Omori/Sunny and Aubrey, and their dynamic of shy boy and assertive girl is the same dynamic Sunny and Aubrey are often depicted by shippers as having.
- Sasaki and Miyano: the Suntan manga. ExplanationThe manga's fourth volume has Shūmei Sasaki and Yoshikazu Miyano resembling Kel and Sunny, respectively. Comparisons were made between the two pairs, being dark-hair-contrasting, downplayed–Masculine–Feminine Gay Couples, to the point of the manga's cover being edited to give Sasaki Kel's tan skin and longer hair, and give Miyano Sunny's eyepatch.
- Racist Aubrey. ExplanationAubrey's No, You retort at Kel calling pink a gross color was to call Kel a gross color. Because Kel in the Real World has a darker skin tone than Aubrey, the fandom proceeded to jokingly call her out for her "racism".
- The OMORI soundtrack is Russian RouletteExplanation (spoilers)Many fans have noted that it is a frightening mistake comparable to Russian roulette to put the entire game soundtrack on shuffle, as the soundtrack has two tracks that near-identical to one another at first: "Lost at a Sleepover" (the theme that plays in the Neighbors Room) and "Friends." (a creepy corruption of the former track that plays in a Black Space area where Basil is brutally murdered by Omori's friends). One oft-cited challenge is "OMORI Russian Roulette", in which the listener compiles a playlist with multiple instances of "Lost at a Sleepover" and one instance of "Friends", then puts the playlist on shuffle and obscures the title of the current track, making it more like the lethal game of chance. Without listening closely, one might not realize they're listening to "Friends." until it is too late.
- Omori is Low Tier God Explanation (spoilers)The final boss Omori has him trying to coerce Sunny into giving up life. Because of this, comparisons between LTG's infamous "You should kill yourself NOW!" speech were made.
- Basil is Logan Paul.Explanation (spoilers?)This alludes in particular to an infamous vlog in which Logan Paul (wearing Squeeze Toy Alien headgear) and his team entered the "suicide forest" of Aokigahara in Japan, discovered the body of a man who hanged himself and posed for pictures with it. Parodies of the apology video posted by Paul amid the ensuing backlash have been done in-character as Basil or Sunny.
