Miss Julie Media Process
This is an example of the gesture films our team created for Strindberg's Miss Julie. Camera work was by my colleague Mark Shogren, with movement improvisation support from Anya Cloud. Improvisations that led to the pieces that were to be film were based on the text, character analysis, and on the work of the actor's themselves. The process went from basic improv, to the construction of pieces to be filmed by Mark, and finally the editing process completed by me that led to 6 final short films that were juxtaposed with live performance.

Some gesture sets were abstract and others more concrete. This clip shows Lily, playing Kristen and some of her gestural work for her kitchen work. It is followed by a clip from the production showing the scene in action.

This final video is of the final few minutes of the production. The series of gestures in the final film are compiled from various improvisations and were reiterated several times in the actresses performance. The effect of looking a mirror is a critical motif for Julie and occurs in the physical gestures as well as the doubling and tripling of her image as she moves to her death.
