MORE than 3000 untaxed vehicles were clamped on roads across Glasgow in the last year.

Figures obtained by the Glasgow Times via a Freedom of Information (FOI) request have revealed the postcodes with the highest number of offenders.

Data from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) shows that action was taken against 3099 untaxed vehicles in the city from October 1, 2023, to October 1, 2024.

While the DVLA states that more than 98 per cent of vehicles on UK roads are correctly taxed, some motorists still choose to take the risk.

In Glasgow, the region with the highest number of offences is the Southside with 1101 followed by the East End with 894.

Meanwhile, there were 514 untaxed vehicles clamped in the West End, 511 in North Glasgow, and just 79 in the city centre.

All vehicles registered in the UK are required by law to be taxed if they are used or kept on public roads.

The DVLA is able to deploy a range of enforcement measures including fines and penalties, court action, clamping, and even impounding to deal with offenders.

According to the UK Government’s website once a vehicle is clamped owners have 24 hours to pay a £100 release fee to avoid impounding.

In March, the DVLA launched a new campaign to remind motorists in Glasgow of the risks involved with failing to tax their vehicles on time.

Alongside automated enforcement penalties for registered keepers of untaxed vehicles, DVLA’s enforcement teams and wheel clamping partners also travel around the UK as part of their day-to-day activity taking action against untaxed vehicles.

Drivers can pay their vehicle tax via the DVLA’s online services which can be found HERE or by calling 0300 123 4321 – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

They can also choose to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email through DVLA’s driver and vehicles account.
