Untapped Goldmines: Discovering Lucrative Niches for Android and iOS App Development
Building apps for iOS and Android is fun. Although I have written software for numerous platforms over the past decades, building apps for Android and iOS is still among my absolute favourites. Looking at the app charts dominated by large companies and marketing budgets can be frustrating, but only if you look at the wrong app charts. This article is not some wishy-washy about the economics of apps, but a very concrete guide into these untapped niche goldmines that still exists in the various app stores.
Lucrative niches are generally those with a demand higher than supply. Those are the goldmines perfectly suited for indie developers like me and maybe you. Sounds great, doesn’t it? What’s the catch? Simple: it’s uncomfortable and you very often don’t get to pick your favourite tools. These categories or niches are niches for a reason. You can’t just hire some app developer off the street and get him or her to build it for you. It requires digging through documentations and has poor support from AI tools such as Copilot or Gemini.
